Don't Try This At Home Kids (Devyn and Connor)

Since John and Jake had gotten their licenses they had been very good about driving safely and taking great care of their shared car. They have even managed to keep their bickering to a minimum while driving.

Still, they had been dreaming of ways to take advantage of their new transportation. And today seemed like perfect day to try something out they'd been dying to attempt. They had considered messing around in the driveway of their home or on one of the back roads close by, but decided on the parking lot at Hammel. They figured there was more room and less chance of oncoming traffic. And hopefully no staff would walk by.

"Alright? Ready?" Jake called out from behind the wheel of their car. He had the windows down and his head hung out the side.

"Yeah! Let's do it!" John yelled. He was standing in the middle of the parking lot facing his car and standing in a runner's stance.

Jake smiled and hit the gas. He didn't slam down on it, but he did pick up a good amount of speed as he drove towards his brother. John waited until the last possible moment to jump up on the hood of the car, run across the roof, and jump off the back end. Jake slammed on the brakes once he knew his brother had made it over and jumped out of the car with the engine still running. The brothers had been pretty sure that the stunt would go fine. It seemed each day their strength and speed was growing as their power grew.

"That was awesome!" "That was awesome!" they yelled, high-fiving each other before noticing another student watching them.

"Wanna give it a try?" Jake offered. "It's easy," John added.

There were very few days that Devyn had experienced here at Hammel that he could truly call uneventful, he had started to think that maybe today was going to fall under that category, but he really shouldn't have counted his chickens so soon.

He could hear the brothers yell at each other as he crossed the parking lot, he'd decided to cut through after taking a few laps around the school out of boredom. "What," he said mostly to himself, not sure what to think of the placement of person and car until the car began to accelerate.

"What," he repeated to himself, this time there was less confusion and more bewilderment. He couldn't say he hadn't expected it when the other boy jumped onto the hood and safely off.

Once addressed Devyn narrowed his eyes at the car, it wasn't impossible for him to do it, he'd been so focused on his movements that he'd unconsciously analyzed them so his brain and body were ready to mimic.

Though, his immediate thought was to turn them down, it was dangerous, stupid, reckless, and completely unnecessary. But dammit if he didn't think it was pretty cool to watch.

It also reminded him of him and his brother when they'd first figured out what Devyn could do, all the tricks and stunts they'd recorded just because they could.

He looked back at the twins, hand rubbing at the scar on the side of his head as if to remind himself what his and his brother's attempts to show off had left him with.

Well, he attempted to convince himself at least. "Maybe," he called back, approaching them with a slight jog, "But maybe start a bit slower, I haven't tried anything stupid like this in a long time."

The brothers loved it when someone joined in their fun. It didn't happen often. Usually they were getting stopped, not joined. And even the few times they got someone to join in, it took way more convincing then a simple suggestion.

"Sure!" John said. He shared a look with his twin, an unspoken question, before running to get behind the wheel of the car. It wasn't so much that they could read each other's minds. More that they were usually thinking the same thing. And that they knew each other so well that they didn't have to vocalize the question of who should drive.

"Alright, you stand over here," Jake, said walking the boy over to where John had been standing earlier. He was grinning like a madman. When the twins got like this, each brother feeding off of the other, it was like an unending circle of craziness. "Want us...me to jump with you?" he added, his voice a bit more serious. The brothers were so used to using 'us' or 'we' that 'me' felt foreign on his tongue.

"We're John and Jake," he added.

"You guys ready?" John yelled out of the car window, revving the engine a little in his excitement.

There was a brief moment immediately following his agreement that he began to seriously reconsider, but he found himself easily swept along with the twins' excitement that his concerns were lost among the flood of adrenaline.


The teen's movements were still fresh in his mind, and he could practically feel his body and muscles preparing themselves. It repeated again in his mind as he aligned himself where he was directed, the beginning components of the stunt appearing in his mind. The angle of his bent knees and position of his feet and arms was as natural as it was precise.


"I'm Devyn," he finally responded, it was hard for him to break concentration from preparing to mimic sometimes, especially when he was focused on not losing it.


"Sure," he flashed the other twin a small smile, adjusting slightly to allow the other boy room to squeeze in beside him, "ready when you are," he said, letting him call for the other to start.

The twins often forgot that not everyone shared their strength and agilely. Partially because these days it came so naturally to them. But also because being at Hammel, they’d gotten used to everyone being super in some way, shape, or form. So while they didn’t know this boy’s ability, or even if he had one (not all teenagers were Hammel students, right? There were siblings and such who visited) they just assumed the boy was perfectly safe joining them.

Jake grinned, glad to be joining in. A year ago he would have been happier in the car or off in the sidelines, but these days John was rubbing off on him. And though he was always willing to play second fiddle to his brother, it no longer filled him with dread to be the one reaching out to a new friend.

John revved the engine a little before yelling out to Jake and Devyn. “One!”

“Two!”

“Three!” “Three!”

The car took off towards them a little too fast before John remembered Devyn’s request and eased off the gas just a little.

“Here we go!” Jake said just before he jumped onto the hood. One foot hit the hood and with the next step he was on the roof. And just because he could and he was enjoying himself, he flipped in the air as he jumped off the back of the car and landed on the pavement.

“Amazing!” “Amazing!” The twins yelled out, sharing each other’s joy and adrenaline rush and John hopped out of the car and Jake turned to see how Devyn had fared.

Devyn may not have possessed a supernatural kind of strength or agility, but he was definitely above average. He trained like he did for many reasons besides simply liking it, such as being in shape enough to be able to mimic most movements. Which is why he felt fairly confident about this situation, so long as the other brother kept his promise to keep it slow at first.


His heart jumped a bit at the initial speed of the car but he calmed down when he slowed. He could feel his brain and muscles syncing to the memory he'd observed earlier, and his movements became automatic, a perfect imitation of what John had done earlier.


Devyn landed solidly on the pavement, heart pounding in his chest as he removed himself from the mimicry. He straightened up, hand patting at his chest as he let the wave of excitement over take him. "Well, that was kinda scary." He bent over, hands on his knees as he let himself calm down, at least he had made it over.
