Frosty the Snowman (Open)

Paul was sent out in the cold to shovel the driveway. He stood outside the house with a shovel in hand staring at the driveway. The driveway wasn't a long driveway to begin with, but with all the snow the driveway seemed huge to Paul. Paul turned on his iPod and with grumbling under his breath he started to de-snow the driveway.

It wasn't as bad as Paul made it out to be. Having his iPod made things not so mind numbing. Paul got into a rhythm with music. He was just flinging the snow out of the way. He wasn't paying attention to where he was flinging, just as long it wasn't on the driveway. He wanted to be done with this work. Paul's body was starting to get sore from the labor.

Paul was getting close to finishing. He didn't have very much left to clear. He picked up the pace. Now he was really flinging snow. He threw the snow over his shoulder not realizing that someone was walking pass. Paul tossed another shovel worth of snow and that was when he realized that he cover someone with snow.

Paul made an 'oh shit' face. "Oops," Paul whispered under his breath. "Sorry about that."

Fancy was on his way home for the weekend. Even though he lived in the dorms, he did occasionally go home to visit his family. Occasionally. Sometimes. When they threatened to come visit him at the school instead. The last thing Fancy wanted was for his family to storm their weirdness across the school and tell everyone that they were there with him. Talk about embarrassing…

So to prevent an unannounced drop-by by his parents and sister, Fancy resigned to come home whenever they asked him to, unless he truly had other business to take care of first, like softball practice or homework. Fancy might have told them more than once that he had too much homework just to get out of it sometimes…

Fancy couldn’t get out of it this time, though. It was the holiday season, after all, New Years was just around the corner, and they had planned a very special event to bring in the new year. Fancy dreaded what they must’ve come up with.

He was lost in these thoughts on his way home when suddenly he found himself doused in a pile of snow. Fancy stopped walking and blinked several times, processing the sudden occurrence, then started to brush the powder out of his curly lock. He chuckled lightly to the person who had been shoveling their lot. “It’s okay,” he assured the boy with a wide smile. “It’s just a little snow. Nobody ever got hurt from having a little snow thrown at them.” Presumably. He could be wrong though.

Paul took the ear buds out. He was relieved that the guy wasn’t upset at Paul for throwing snow on him. Paul smiled, “Yeah, just cold water. Can’t do much harm.” Paul mentally patted him self on the back. Paul had scored in talking with a cutie.

What now? In any normal situation the two boys would go their separate ways. The cutie would go back to what ever business he had. And Paul would finish up being a slave to his parents. Paul didn’t want the chance to talk to a cutie slip through his fingers. He had to come up with something.

“Do you like snow?” Paul blurted out. He mentally slapped him self. Why couldn’t he just introduce him self like a normal person? There many things Paul could of said. So, “do you like snow” wasn’t the worst thing to said.

Fancy laughed. “Ha ha, I should hope not.” Unless they were out in the middle of the arctic, then he supposed the cold water would be fairly harmful then, but he wasn’t going to point that out.

Fancy spend the next few seconds brushing more snow from his curly hair and off his clothes, about to move on his way, but was stopped when the boy who flung the snow suddenly blurted out a question.

Paul was lucky that Fancy was a naturally oblivious person and didn’t notice any strangeness at all about the question. On the contrary, his immediate thought was that this person was really friendly, and that brought a smile to his face. “Yeah, I think so. Well, about as much as the next person,” he said. “It’s terrible that it ices the roads and driveways, but it’s still fun to play in.” Sometimes. Fancy often got pelted by snowballs by his sister, who had a better throwing arm than him and so would usually win those fights.

“Snow is fun. Cold isn’t.” Most people were like that. They liked the snow but not the cold and ice that comes with it. Paul didn’t mind the cold. As long as he dressed for the weather then it didn’t matter to Paul. Unless it was like -50 degrees Fahrenheit out, then yeah, Paul hated the cold.

Paul was doing a lousy job at trying to keep the conversation or at least that what was what Paul felt. “What school do you go to?” That was the next thing out of Paul’s mouth. Still, he had not introduced himself.

“No, it isn’t,” he agreed with a soft laugh.

Maybe Paul wasn’t doing a great job at keeping the conversation going, but Fancy sure as hell didn’t notice, only thinking that this person was very friendly. And some chatter with a neighbor was never a bad thing. The next question clued him in, at least, that this person wanted to talk, so Fancy turned and put his cold hands onto the pockets of his jacket, taking a stance that said he was sticking around for a bit longer. “Oh, I go to Hammel,” he said with a slight raise in his eyebrows. “It’s that school over at the top of the hill.” Fancy pointed back the way he came. “Do you know it?” He couldn’t think why the boy wouldn’t.

Paul looked in the direction Fancy was pointing. It was kind of stupid for Paul to look. He was a student at Hammel. Even if Paul wasn’t a student at Hammel, he grew up in Pilot Ridge so he knew his way around. Although Paul didn’t know street names with the exception of a few. “Yeah, I’m a student there. Sophomore.”

Once again Paul was faced with another Hammel student. Paul made a mental note that he has to start paying attention to who were in his classes. He wasn’t going to know every student at Hammel, but it made Paul feel stupid when he didn’t know the names of his classmates. “It’s an interesting place.”

Of course he was a student there. It was more unusual these days for Fancy to come across a student who didn’t go to Hammel, even though there were still plenty of non-meta kids around the neighborhood. He knew a lot of them growing up, and while some of them picked up on his meta-human status, it was still something that was discouraged as a topic of conversation. Hammel being a meta-school was supposed to be…not public information, basically.

“Oh really?” he said with a smile. “I’m a sophomore too, it’s a wonder we haven’t met before.” Hammel was a large school, after all, so it wasn’t too unusual. And Fancy was pretty oblivious as a person in general. The boy nodded. “Yeah, it is. Lots of interesting people.” And powers.

Fancy paused a moment before he took the initiative to step forward and offer a cold, ungloved hand. “It’s good to meet you,” he said, finally greeting the other boy properly. As in, in a way that didn’t involve being buried in snow. “I’m Fancy. You’re…?”
