The BasicsName: Layla Grace Montgomery
Nicknames: None
Age: 24
Orientation: Heterosexual
Desired Rank/Job: English Teacher
Powers: Probability Manipulation
Layla is able to manipulate the probability of events, causing unlikely things to happen and likely things to not happen. She is able to both cause and prevent good and bad luck, as well as a variety of other fields of events. For the most part this is an involuntary ability. When she’s in a good mood, she’s a very lucky person and those around her tend to be very lucky as well. She tends to find money on the ground or win a few dollars when she buys a scratch-off ticket. Layla has also found that she’s very lucky when it comes to gambling. The happier she is, the better the luck.
However, her powers are deeply tied to her emotions so if she’s feeling sad or angry her luck and the luck of those around her tends to go south, which really only proves to worsen her mood. The bad luck usually tends to manifest in lost money or bets, small things like that. However, if she has lost control of her emotions, her ability has the potential to become very, very dangerous.
Layla can also manipulate probability at will. These manipulations are limited though, as she cannot change anything that doesn’t already have a chance of happening to begin with. Whatever she is trying to influence must have at least a 10% chance of already happening; so she is unable to manipulate her or anyone else’s chances of winning the lottery or something similar. However, when she is not able to control her emotions, she is able to influence events that are much less likely to happen, such as light bulbs blowing out or electrical outlets catching fire, though she does not do this voluntarily. They happen sporadically as her emotions spike.
Since her abilities are tethered to her emotions, her powers are very temperamental. She must remain in control of her feelings at all times or else chaos tends to ensue. She also runs the risk of setting off a disastrous set of chain reactions. For example, if someone were about to be hit by a car and she were to manipulate the event so something were to cause it to swerve and miss (i.e. a bird flying into its windshield or something similar) she could then accidentally send it into the path of several more oncoming cars, causing a pile-up and even more damage than what would have happened if she hadn’t intervened. Other side effects manifest in extreme fatigue if she is voluntarily manipulating the outcome of something, as well as dizzy spells and occasionally blacking out.

General Appearance: Layla has always been a very pretty girl, though most people attribute it to her cheery and pleasant demeanor. Her face is heart-shaped, with high cheekbones and a slender nose. She is most well-known for her big, hazel eyes, which also carry small flecks of green and gold. Her lips are on the thinner side, and her eyebrows are bold, but a shade or two lighter than her hair color.
Layla stands at about 5”8 and weighs around 127 pounds. She’s thin, but has a wiry and healthy build and is very fit. She doesn’t have a ton of curves, but has filled out throughout her teenage years. Layla’s hair is a very dark shade of brown, and looks almost black when it’s wet, and wavy. It’s also long, but not too long; she keeps it cut at just below her shoulder blades. She usually straightens it, but occasionally styles it so that her waves look nice. She hardly ever just lets it dry naturally, since it gets very frizzy if she doesn’t do something to it. Usually, if she doesn’t have time or doesn’t feel like styling it, she’ll wear it in a ponytail. Her skin is pale, especially during the winter, but she does tan in the summer time after the sunburn fades.
Despite growing up as a girly girl, Layla has a very relaxed sense of style. She’s not a fan of professional looking clothes, and prefers to wear a more casual attire to work, though she knows to shy away from anything that would be ‘inappropriate’ in a work environment. She wears a lot of jeans, and even though her dress is casual, she still always manages to look nice. She loves layering in the fall/winter and big, chunky sweaters and scarves are staple in her winter time wardrobe. In the summer she tends to liven up her outfits with lots of color.
Layla’s makeup is average, not light, but not heavy either. Most of the time she’ll just put on foundation, blush, eyeliner, mascara, and eyeshadow. If she’s going out to do something fancy, she will wear it a little bit darker. She rarely goes without at least putting on eyeliner and mascara, save for when she’s working out or maybe going on hike.
Personality: Layla just loves people. She’s always been an extravert and tries to see the best of everyone she meets. As the baby of her family, Layla thrived off of all the attention she received from the rest of her family. They spoiled her and babied her, and because of this Layla’s world has always been rather rosy. She tends to be a bit naive when it comes to people, and it has always been easy to take advantage of her.
While her normal demeanor is usually happy and cheerful, she does struggle with her emotions from time to time. She tries to not let herself get upset or angry because she’ll lose control of her abilities if this happens, so those feelings tend to get bottled up after a while. She finds this exhausting, especially when confronted with a tough student or a rude person, and every now and then she’ll lose her temper and all those repressed feelings will bubble up and over.
She’s also incredibly flirtatious, and tends to flirt with most men around her age regardless of whether she has romantic feelings for them or not. Layla is also incredibly laid-back and tends to let most things just slide right off her back, as opposed to getting frustrated about it. She finds that it’s easier to control her abilities this way. However, she was also an athlete for most of her life, so she’s still incredibly competitive. She likes to win, but will not sulk or get upset if she doesn’t. Now, she curbs her competitiveness by participating in road races regularly.
Some people do not always appreciate Layla’s good moods and ever-present smile. Her cheery disposition sometimes frustrates people and they end up getting annoyed with her quickly. This doesn’t bother her, since she believes that if someone doesn’t appreciate her friendly attitude, then she wouldn’t want to be around them to begin with.
Layla also loves kids and loves teaching. Even as a teenager she knew she wanted to be a teacher after helping her mother with her students. She’d always thought she wanted to be an elementary school teacher, like her mother, but decided to pursue adolescent education once she got to college. She’s a great listener and loves seeing her students advance.Your VicesLikes:

They were living in Madison, Connecticut when she was born, but moved to Pilot Ridge, Vermont when she was three when her mother was offered a job teaching third grade at the public elementary school. They still visit Madison frequently, since Connecticut is where the majority of their family lives.
Growing up, both Layla’s older brother and older sister were heavily involved in sports, so naturally, as the youngest sibling, Layla wanted to play as well. She played a variety of sports before she found the ones she was most comfortable in: track and soccer. She was a happy and cheery child, always smiling and laughing. However, she was prone to frequent tantrums and meltdowns when she didn’t get what she wanted. She grew out of these for the most part by the time she was about eight, but still had one or two every so often.
Both her parents were meta humans; her mother could manipulate light and her father was able to move things with his mind. Eventually, her older brother’s pyrokinesis developed when he was twelve, so he was sent to Hammel, just like their parents had been. Her sister’s telekinesis manifested just before her twelfth birthday, when Layla was nine. During this time, Layla frequented the campus often, dreaming about the abilities she would develop someday, just like the rest of her family. It was almost expected for the little girl to develop meta human powers eventually, since every other member of her immediate family had.
And when Layla was eleven and a half, she did, though it wasn’t quite the ability she’d been expecting. She’d been on the playground during recess, drawing with chalk on the pavement when two boys came up behind her. They weren’t in her class, they were a year older than her, but they pointed and laughed at Layla and her friends as they drew.
“Look how big her eyes are!” One of them sneered, while they other was bent over laughing. Layla didn’t understand what was so funny. He was clearly laughing extra hard just for effect.
“She looks like a bug!” Another boy joined in.
Layla could feel the tears pooling in her eyes, as her friends tried to pull her away. They could draw somewhere else on the playground. But the boys followed her, still making fun of her big eyes, or her best friend’s curly hair. Eventually it all became too much and Layla burst into tears right on the playground, which only caused the boys to laugh even more.
But only a few moments after Layla began crying, there was an ear piercing screech, followed by a loud crash. A car’s brakes had given out as they were driving past the school, and they skidded right through a red light and T-boned another oncoming vehicle. The crash had taken place right across the street from the school’s playground, which sent most of the children into a panic, including Layla. The next thing she knew, the the telephone poles began sparking, exploding one at a time down the street, causing a power outage.
Luckily, no one had been seriously injured in the accident, and the owner of the car had admitted that his brakes had been acting up for the last few days. No one suspected little Layla at first, but the recruiters at the Institute suspected meta human activity when they caught wind of it. The incident made the newspaper in Pilot Ridge and the recruiters showed up at the Montgomery house that afternoon. Her parents had never met anyone with the ability to control probability so they were almost a little bit frightened as the recruiter explained to them what Layla could do, and what she had done. She switched schools the next week, since they claimed her ability was too dangerous and she lacked control to finish out the year at her current school.
While Layla was happy that she had manifested, it was not quite what she expected. Her new powers scared her, even as she was trained to control them. She found herself constantly suppressing her emotions in an effort to keep them under control. However, as she came into her abilities she found that there were positive aspects of them as well. So long as she was happy, she received tremendous amounts of good luck. She’d find money on the ground, she’d win contests on the radio, and a lot of the people who were around received good luck as well.
She went through high school, gaining control of her abilities and her emotions. When she graduated she chose to attend Fairfield College in Connecticut, close to where her extended family lived. She thrived in college, majoring in education and getting good marks in all her classes. Although, her meta human abilities did cause a bit of stir as a lot of people claimed that she had cheated and that’s how she received such high scores. However, there was no way to prove this so those allegations were eventually dropped and she carried on with the rest of her studies.
Layla was a little bit wild in college too; she regularly indulged in partying with her friends and staying out late. She’d never lived away from home before, since her family lived in Pilot Ridge and she was a day student at Hammel. She loved her newfound independence, but it did take her almost a full semester to fully balance her social and academic life.
She graduated with her teaching certificate and decided to take a year off and travel abroad. She au paired in France for a year, living with a family in Paris and teaching their two little girls English. During her time abroad, she also received the opportunity to travel all over Europe, both with her French family and on her own, visiting places like England, Spain, Italy, Greece, and several other countries.
Coming back to the US was bittersweet because loved her French family, but she was so excited to see her real family again as well. She moved back to Pilot Ridge in the summer of 2015 to teach at Hammel the following year. Her mother had suggested teaching at the elementary school with her, since Layla was so good with younger children, but she felt that she’d be better suited at Hammel, since she would be able to relate well with her future students.
She teaches English, mostly literature, but a few writing workshops as well, and loves absolutely every minute of it. She loves each and every one of her students, and loves watching them grow and learn. She has a very laid-back classroom policy, encouraging students to speak out whenever they have any questions or opinions they want to share. She currently still lives with her parents, but has plans to move out in the next few weeks, having finally saved up enough money to live on her own.Roleplay ExampleNoooooooooooooooWhat About You?Name: Rikki
