SW: Spirit Day Balloon Party

The last day of Spirit Week had been proclaimed "Spirit Day," a day where the students were to show off their pride by wearing blue and white clothing (the school colors) and, during lunch, the typical menu had been canceled. Instead, the entire cafeteria and the area leading from the hall to the courtyard outside had been decked out with blue and white tablecloths. There was pizza, chips, and a make your own ice cream sundae bar.

On the other end of the courtyard, away from the food, there were tubs of water balloons as far as the eye could see. To honor the mascot, any shapeshifter who could turn into a husky had been given first toss with the balloons. From there, a full-out melee had followed, with the outer boundary set up as the pond on one side (to prevent an unfortunate accident) and the food area on the other.

Katy shuffled on her feet somewhat awkwardly by one of the water balloon tubs. She wasn't usually one for this event - hell, even though here she was, it wasn't to participate. Other staff members suggested that it would be a good idea for her to oversee the inevitable conflict between students, out of fun or other means. Quick 'on-call' doctor and all...

Her arms were wrapped tightly around her middle, holding a clearly too-small hoodie tight around her stomach. Katy had made the unfortunate mistake of not realizing that the Balloon Party was being held today - and so she had come wearing a white shirt. Thankfully, Miss Rayburn was able to lend her a spare hoodie, though their height differences were made painfully obvious. The hoodie could barely reach around her and the edge only reached her midriff.

As the signal for war was blown, the grass soon became flattened and muddy by the water balloon that were thrown back and forth, like grenades, and the stamps of heavy feet. Sounds of yelling, laughter and hollers filled the usually peaceful air. Katy edged away from the tub as students ran back and forth, her blue eyes carefully watching the battle for any injuries.

She was so focused on the water exploding across the field that she failed to notice one purple balloon soar through the air - until it hit her right in the face.

Sean had always enjoyed Spirit Day when Hammel did their Spirit Week celebrations, which typically occurred every few years rather than annually at some other schools. He viewed it as a pride day, a viewpoint which, year in and year out, other students appeared to share. While he wore a navy blue suit with a crisp white shirt and a white and blue striped tie, he saw a number of the students running around in white shirts that they had decorated with Huskies or with representations of their powers.

It warmed the heart. Particularly given some of the pushback in the community against meta-humans (due primarily to PUSE and the fallout from the Holiday Bash months ago), he found it so encouraging that the students could take pleasure and pride in who they were and what they could do.

That pride was not enough to get him to join in a water balloon fight, even with Doctor Sherlock having jumped into the fray. Instead, he stood off just to the side of the boundary so he was off-limits, working to make sure that all of the hungry students could get their fair share of pizza and ice cream. After which he fully planned on partaking as well.

[Cleo Warren]

Cleo hadn’t really planned on joining the water balloon fight. Honestly, she didn’t really have a lot of blue shirts and had totally forgotten to go to the mall and grab something, so the school was lucky that was even wearing the colors. Not that she didn’t want to participate or anything, but she literally dug out this shirt out of the depths of her dresser in an attempt to find something.

But she had been really excited for pizza and ice cream because Cleo loved to eat. And really, who could go wrong with pizza and ice cream sundaes? Let’s be honest, the food was really what Cleo came here for. A water balloon fight was going to be messy, and Cleo didn’t need to be a precog to see that the grass covered ground was going to become an ocean of mud once everyone got started.

Unfortunately, as she was picking the rest of the chips off her plate she did not see the two bright pink water balloons flying toward her. She jumped, letting out a yelp as one hit her in the shoulder while the other missed, sailing right by her phase and breaking on the grass behind her.

Cleo looked up in time to see two of her friends scamper back off into the mess of students running around. She looked back down at her plate. Well, she couldn’t finish her chips now anyway, since they were covered in water. She pouted setting her place on the table next to her, and setting her bag on the ground where everyone else’s bags were laid. Hopefully it would be safe there. She was already wet now, so she might as well join the party. At least to get her friends back!
