Thread Roulette: Jared and Dimitri

Is there a precedent for how incredibly bad at this I am?

It was all his mom’s suggestion. Jared’s been pestering her for weeks now about the fruitlessness of his training sessions. It’s not that his trainer was bad, ‘cause he really wasn’t, but the mere fact that Jared’s case is an extremely unique and special one that even he is stumped. As far as Jared knew, he’s the first documented case of a mutation making that makes the ‘infected’ invisible to all sorts of technological advancements, from the more common ones like cameras and automatic doors, to the more technical ones like a CT-scanner. While he rants to everyone in his family, his rants are magnified when he’s talking to his mother, seeing that she’s a researcher in Kocher for almost 8 years now.

While the idea seems interesting, Jared couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy about the whole thing. It’s not because he fears he’s be probed and pricked by dozens of weird instruments (his mom told him explicitly that testing is not like those seen in the movies; they don’t put ten needles in a subject, not at the same time at least) but because he fears about what they might find out about his powers. More specifically, that the tests he’ll undergo will tell him that there’s no prospect of him ‘getting better’. It would break his heart so much that he’s desperately trying to juggle if it’s better if he lives on with hope that he’ll ‘be cured’ even though there isn’t, or just know that he won’t change now.

He took a small breath in before knocking at the door three times, nervously playing with his fingers afterwards. “Err, umm, excuse me, is anyone inside?”

"Dimitri, you can do this. Just don't worry about hurting her."

"I can't promise that!"

Dimitri pushed his hands through his hair, mentally readying himself. He adjusted his hat, the bluish-gray one that looked like it was a newsboy's hat from the 1940's. His insides felt ready to fall out as his nervousness rose. He was scared. He was a scientist, not an athlete. Most definitely not an athlete. He was thin by nature. His body was lean because of his poor diet and his body's way of quickly processing things. He was aware that he played jumprope with the line of a healthy weight and under-weight. It wasn't a good practice, but he never really thought of his own health when he was working on something.

"Dimitri!"

The meta-human's attention jerked back to his sister, who was standing rather patiently before him, a not-so-patient shine in her eyes. Her curly red hair was thick around her face, her lips pursed.

"Okay, Melissa, I'm getting on." Dimitri stepped onto the step ladder and threw his leg over the side of the large animal before him.

Melissa smiled at him, "Good, now, a Brontosaurus is a very delicate animal, please-"

Dimitri held up his hand, "Hold on, Mel. Did you say Brontosaurus?" he looked down at the animal he was straddled on. It was a brontosaurus. "Wait. A. Minute. Brontosauruses were proved to have never existed." He looked at his twin, who was suddenly a blond with long hair cascading past her feet and dragging behind in in a waterfall of hair. She smiled, and was suddenly a very different person from his sister. She was lovely and short, with a mouth that looked like it had just finished laughing.

"Melissa?"

The girl looked at him, tilted her head and words started coming out, at first they were inaudible, but the he made out, "...is anyone inside?"

Dimitri woke up in a flash, sitting up, and promptly hitting his forehead against the underside of his desk. He cursed, rubbing the bruised place grudgingly. He crawled from out from under his desk, and stood up, ironing out his clothes with his hands as best he could. He took a breath and swig of water from his bottle sitting nearby.

He opened the door to his office, looking about in the hall. He spotted a short boy, probably a student. Had Dimitri scheduled any tests with students today? He didn't even know what day it was. Had he been asleep all day and all night, or was it still yesterday. The throbbing in his head pounded harder against his skull.

"Hey, kid! What're you looking for?" He called after the young man, exiting the safety of his office and began walking down the hallway.

Jared was so busy fiddling with his fingers and swinging back and forth on the balls of his feet that he almost jumped up in surprise as the door opened and revealed a tall, lanky man. He shyly looked up, his eyes wide in anticipation, desperately trying to find his voice. For all intents and purposes, he’d say he was intimidated by the man that he could only smile when he looked at him. A weak and shy smile to beat.

It’s not that the man was intimidating. He had an air of authority around him yes, but not enough to be overbearing and imposing. More like, distant. Detached. Or emotionless. Or maybe it was because he despite his obvious tiredness and ruggedness (the creases in his pants are pretty much obvious, not to mention his sleeves are rolled up unevenly) he still exudes an aura of refinement and knowledge around him. Nonetheless, it had him thinking, are all researchers like this?. He does hope not, ‘cause Jasper would just break if he sees their mom in such a state.

Only when the man spoke to him did he got out of his seemingly uncalled trance. He promptly followed him, clearing his throat before speaking. “A-are you Dr. S-spade?” he asked, “I’m J-Jared Park. I ccame here as per my trainer and my mo–Dr. Park’s request.” Jared is definitely not used to calling his mom ‘Dr. Park’. It just strikes him as awkward and strange, much like when he called his father’s office once and had to look for ‘Engr. Park’. It’s a good thing his mom decided to work in Kocher then, else he’d have to endure that awkwardness all the time. “They’re both stumped on the nature of my powers and suggested I turn to you to see if you could somehow shed some light about it.”

Then it occurred to him that he might’ve forgotten to set an appointment. He does hope his trainer set one for him, else he would seem a bit too rude. He thinks.
