The Eagle and the Lady (Rima)

It had been some time since he'd been able to fly.

As the sun slowly sank towards the western horizon and across the Adirondac mountains of northern New York, Tobias would ride the thermals thousands of feet above the school in the form of the greatest bird of prey to ever live. Haast's eagle had died out around a thousand years ago, though it's preserved bones had given Tobias a means of travel that made a car obsolete.

With broad wings spread wide Tobias would circle the sky above the school campus, his eyes roaming the ground below as he did. The sheer magnificence of the massive eagle in flight was only matched by it's powers of perception. The bird form quite literally had telescopic vision which Tobias would use to gaze upon the campus below as if he were hovering only ten feet above the ground.

The eagle had always been the form that brought most comfort to Tobias. The animal's instincts unlike that of the Tylosaurus or Smilodon were, while predatory, not overly aggressive when it came to the modern world. With the lift of the thermals flight was almost effortless, allowing Tobias to enjoy the sheer beauty that he was witness too at the height he was at.

Rima ran her tongue over her lower lip. It was chapped, she’d been too concerned with overcoming some training, and trying to evade the storm of migraines that often came after them. The only way she could honestly describe it: migraines sucked. Often, she’d felt as though an outside force was toying with her, since trying to control one thing kept bringing on more and more of the problem.

Today the white fedora with black pinstripes, sat on the ground. Training was running her dry: right into the ground. She’d told Clarisse she was going to come practice but Rima still felt disheartened after her most recent episode.

Deciding to put out one, good shot for the day, she slid the marble out from her pocket with delicate fingers. The iridescent blue swirl in the center of the clear sphere caught the light. Yes, no matter how trouble, the small glass object always managed to bring some facets of peace. Closing her grey-blue eyes, Rima envisioned the marble, and slowly gave a mental push… Sending it sky high.

“Stupid!” She screamed, balling her hands into fists and letting her nails bite crescents into the flesh of her hand. A moment later it landed… a good twenty yards from her. Her shoulders slumped. A defeated sound came from the back of her throat. And Rima flopped back flat, staring up at the sky… And some sort of massive bird.

To Rima, the broad winged form of the eagle in the sky would be no more then a tiny silohuete. Yet to Tobias, the girl below would be as clear as day. He'd caught sight of her moments earlier, as he had the display of her abilities. It was one of the main reasons that Tobias had taken to the skies outside of getting to know the lay out of the campus below. The young man had wanted to get a birds eye view of just what kind of people he'd be sharing territory with.

While normally Tobias would be the last one to seek out actual human company on the likely chance they'd be adamant he contribute in verbal conversing, the beautiful thing about the eagle is that it could not talk. So, ducking himself into a dive, Tobias would start to shoot down towards the earth below at an accelerated pace towards the trees bordering the soccer field.

It wouldn't be long until the massive bird would be swooping down along the tree line and with a flap of it's wings would hover over the top of a pine tree near the sprawled out young woman. After a few moments of manuverring himself into the branches midway up the tree, Tobias would turn to stare at Rima. All this was done of course with the familiar call of the eagle family.

Rima's eyes went wide with an unbridled, childlike curiousity. The young, recently turned fifteen, year old woman had thought she'd lost his part of herself when she was eight, when her Mother had passed away and her Father had stomped away any and all pleasure she'd been able to have in his attacks with tests, therapy, and school.

In her eyes, the bird was magnificent. She couldn't decide the species: it was too large to be a simple falcon, far too large in fact, and the size once again wasn't quite right for a hawk. A bald eagle would have while atop its head, unless it was a young specimen, but still, whatever this creature was, it was definately not from any nature documentary Rima had ever seen, nor a book she'd read.

"Beautiful." Her sweet voice was extremely quiet, in fact she'd only spoke the word as she'd been breathing. By nature, she was quiet and thoughtful, until one got to know her better. At the moment, Rima's persona hadn't changed.
