Time Warp: More I Cannot Wish You (Piper&Courtney)

Just before graduation, you feel so young, and so old. Everything is open. A little after graduation, coming back to see the old school, you feel so young, and so old. Does nostalgia pass for advice?

Four years. It had been four years since Courtney had arrived at Hammel, an awkward shy little girl who was afraid to talk long enough to make friends and terrified of reaching out to even her roommates. This was the same girl who had carried around her Epipen like a security blanket and had slept with earplugs in so she couldn't hear the conversations of insects outside of her bedroom. It was hard to believe that she had somehow dragged herself away from that maddening stage of her life and just worked through it until she had gotten to the person she was now, a somehow functional adult with a distinct feeling of being all too capable.

She was a graduate now, a proud former Hammel student, and as she stared at the building that had been her home for all those years, Courtney couldn't help but smile. It felt so good to be older and wiser, but at the same time, it felt so good to just remember. She had been happy and accepted, and she had learned so much from so many people who weren't halfway qualified to be teachers. It was great, the knowing, the feeling of possibility that now, she could face the world, and bravely too. It didn't matter if she was a freak, now she could be and it just wouldn't bother her. It was such a swelling feeling that Courtney felt the need to just sit down and bask in her own ability to be appreciative.

"Thank you so much." Courtney said quietly. She was still terribly soft-spoken, but that was just her vocal range. She couldn't understand how anyone could stand to be loud all the time, but it certainly wasn't for her. "I just want you to know that I'm really glad... I could be here." She could hear the whispers of ants under the ground and the buzz of flies and gnats and a million of every little creature that crept and it wasn't nearly as maddening as it had been, another thing Hammel had allowed her. Just a little peace of mind and she could think without hearing so much. "I sure am going to miss it here, I hope you know." Conversing with a campus didn't even make her worried that someone would hear and think less of her. And yet, she could almost hear the sound of footsteps.

"Hello stranger." Courtney said, raising her voice slightly and closing her eyes. How strange it was now, not to be a student, how invigorating to have the who world, her whole future in front of her. "Hope you don't mind me... If you're up for it, we could talk." Oh yes, Courtney was feeling happy and free. She could hear dragonflies dancing and caterpillars chattering on about leaves and it all sounded just fine to her. Was this how everyone felt when they graduated? This lovely limitless newness? Courtney just knew she couldn't be the only one who felt this optimistic.
