A Brokeback Remake [Riley, Danny]

It was Friday morning and Griff had his camper bag all set up. There was his little propane gas lantern, a four man tent, sleeping bags, pots and pans... everything a trio and goat could need if they were in the mountains for four days. He'd loaded up the mini's boot with everything - aside from Riley's provisions and anything Danny had brought along, and was now in extremely good spirits. He'd set his answer machine to let people know he'd be out of contact till Monday night, and then gotten dressed for hiking and camping.

Gladys instinctively knew she was off on an outing, and frolicked mercilessly around the house, upsetting several chairs and being a brat. Griff actually had to lock her outside at one point because she was being such a pest.

Now all he had to do was wait for Danny and Riley to arrive, then they could head up to the mountains together, park up and get walking. He just hoped that things wouldn't be awkward - especially seeing as how he'd kissed one man and admitted liking the other. Oh boy.

Running his hands through his hair, he filled up his thermos flask with tea and clipped Gladys up to her lead, checking his watch and heading outside to lock the house up. This was going to be some serious weekend, he just knew it.

All week, Riley had been anxiously waiting for this day. All week, he'd been bogged down by having come to terms with the fact that he was indeed very, very attracted; physically and emotionally, to two men. Both of them have expressed their mutual attraction towards him and he had spent the whole week trying to figure out what this could mean.

Fact of the matter was, he wanted both of them. It wasn't about greed or being selfish [although he did feel both those emotions] though. He just wanted them both to be with him. And even Griff had expressed that he liked someone else so...they could work it out, couldn't they? Couldn't they?

He had followed Griff's list without fail and re-checked to see if things were in proper order. Once that was done, he drove over to Danny's and they both went to Griff's, chattering about stuff. At one point, he gripped Danny's hand without even realising it.

Parking his truck at the curb leading up to Griff's house, he hopped out of the truck and walked up to the door and knocked.

Funny, now that the day had arrived, Riley felt oddly at peace.

Danny wished he was at peace. The man had fearsomely mixed emotions about this whole thing. Having had a man he cared about very much cheat on him, he felt horrible that he was basically cheating on both of the men. It wasn’t even just one, because Danny couldn’t say which one he felt more strongly or had first experienced emotions first. He’d expressed it to Riley, but all the while he’d been thinking of Griff. He didn’t want to be a cheater. But he did want them both. Riley had said that he had something to work out. Could he possibly be feeling the same way?

He packed everything he was supposed to, although not having much experience with camping he wasn’t altogether too sure what some of the stuff was for. Riley had picked him up and had taken his hand, and although he blushed, he didn’t let go of his hand and let him guide him to the car. And when they arrived at Griff’s house, he found himself relaxing. Sort of. Even though he could be caught by either of the men, he just liked them being together more than he cared.

“Hey!” he beamed when Griff opened the door. “Are you ready? I’m really excited for this, not gonna lie.”

As Riley's truck pulled up in the driveway, Gladys' tail began to wag furiously as though she were a dog. She reared up on her back legs and boxed the air with her hooves, before practically tugging Griff over towards the truck and catching Riley just as he began to knock. "No need!" He said cheerily, waving. "I'm all set, just locking up to make sure nothing awful happens when we're away."

The feeling in his chest of warmth and nerves caused the doctor to quietly wonder if he was having some sort of heart attack before they went camping, but seeing Danny and Riley together pushed those thoughts away from his head, instead opening his arms to pull them both close. "Just ah, put the baggage in the back of my car." He paused then, scratching the back of his head and blushing.

"Someone'll have to sit in the back with Gladys, and it's not the tallest car in the world." He looked over at the old wagon with a fond smile. "So I hope you don't feel squashed, Riley." Opening the back door, he ushered Gladys to the side, where she perched, then flopped down gracefully, four legs tucked underneath her.

"Everything is packed, I even brought a map just in case we get horrendously lost, but I hope we don't." The man felt in wonderful spirits seeing both men there, together. But there was to be no relationship talk. Not until he had the fresh mountain air in his lungs and the clear space to think about how to ask both men... how they felt about being in a relationship with him. Together. At the same time.

"Anyway, hop in, I have a huge flask of tea and I've found there's a camp site we can get fresh water from, so we're all sorted." The man looked pleased with himself then, and he gestured politely at the car.

Like Griff, Riley was hoping any serious talk would happen when they were out in the open and in the middle of this camping trip. He didn't want the drive up to the mountains to be filled with awkward in one small car. He clung to the two men a tad longer than necessary before letting them go.

"I'll go transfer the luggage." Riley smiled before walking to the back of his truck to do the transferring. "I don't mind sitting at the back, really. I've been in smaller cars." He called out to Griff. "Although alternatively, we could take my truck? We could put everything in the back, and the front seat can house all four of us."

It helped that Danny and Griff were small compared to Riley so the front seat would definitely be sufficient to hold the men and the pet goat. He smiled at the pleased grin on Griff's face, before reminding himself not to just rush the smaller man in front of Danny.

Well...not yet anyway.

Danny, in turn, wasn’t feeling quite so at ease as the other men. At least, not at first.

He was pretty sure he was having a heart attack. Or maybe it was a stroke. Whatever it was, it didn’t feel great. His heart was pounding in his chest and when he saw the two men together, he was pretty sure he was going to pass out. But when Griff and Riley were both pulled into a hug, he felt himself easing. Not a lot, but enough for him to no longer feel like he was dying.

If it felt this nice to be with these two men, it couldn’t be bad, right? Something that felt this good couldn’t be wrong.

“I don’t mind sitting in the back with Gladys,” he chirped, glancing between them. “I don’t mind, and it’ll be more comfortable for you, Riley.” And his lips turned into a faint smile. Not as big as his normal ones, maybe, but sincerely meant all the same and warm. He grinned outright as Griff mentioned the map and the tea, and then nodded. “Sounds great.”

And then maybe he could talk to them. About he hadn’t been straightforward about things when he’d first talked to them, and how he might like both men and might want to date them both and maybe have them dating each other…

No. That wouldn’t go well. At all. Maybe that would happen at the end of the trip.

“The truck might work better, though,” he added, glancing between the two. “What do you think? I can move stuff anywhere.” Danny was an expert at moving. You got good at that with show business.

Griff paused and ran his hands through his hair at the idea of taking the truck. It was tempting, yes. The idea of them all being snuggled up together with Gladys in their lap singing along to hilariously bad cowboy songs just caused the doctor to fill with a great warmth. Oh god, was he coming down with a fever? He paled a moment, and checked his pulse, then his forehead and took a breath, ignoring any odd glances his way.

"Hm, a dilemma." He said playfully, leaning against the old car and thinking. "Alright, lets go in the truck, as long as it's okay having Gladys on our laps." The goat seemed to be quite happy with this, and the man decided to help unload the car and pile the baggage up in the truck. Gladys decided to help by nudging into Riley's legs, her tail flicking from side to side.

Now things were moving around, Griff could feel his body tingling with anticipation. This really was an important trip. He just wished he knew how to broach the subject with them both. Maybe he should have called Sean to ask him - but then it was intimate knowledge and he wasn't sure whether it was right to do so. Taking a deep breath, he moved the last of the camping gear into the back of the truck with Danny's help, then scooped Gladys into his arms.

"Okay, we're set, lets get to the mountains!" He chirruped eagerly, ignoring Gladys' nibbles to his face. "I've been looking forward to this for ages." He added in earnest, just wanting to cuddle up against both men and feel the wind in his hair.

God he wanted to kiss them both so much.

So much he nearly staggered straight into the truck without opening the door. How embarrassing.

Riley noticed the two men having some difficulty but had he known it was because of what could happen up at the mountains, he would have reassured them that nothing bad was going to happen. Would it?

"Of course it's okay, Griff." Riley offered a small smile to the younger man and helped move everything to the back of his truck. Once everything was securely strapped down, he motioned for everyone to get in as he climbed into the driver's seat.

Finding Griff's enthusiasm catching, Riley voiced his own eagerness. "So have I." He nodded as he started the car. He looked down to Gladys and rubbed the top of her head.

"Griff, you're going to have to direct me to the site where I can park." Riley said before driving off. And with Griff's exact directions, they finally arrived to the site.

Dropping out of the truck, Riley looked around, breathing in the crisp air. "God, everything looks beautiful up here." He said softly with a smile. Turning to the other two men, his smile softened. And he was going to be sharing that beauty with these men. It couldn't have been any better. The sap in him was having trouble keeping the song out of his heart.

Although being in a car with both men didn’t seem like the brightest way to keep a secret—if he wanted this kept a secret, as he couldn’t seem to decide--Danny smiled and nodded. “I don’t mind that at all!” Gladys was growing on him, in spite of his previous bad experiences with goats. Plus, he’d worn the worn-out clothes anyways, which doubled as good for camping and good for nibbling goats. And maybe…maybe it would work out for the best after all. Maybe they could figure this. Maybe he wasn’t a cheater after all? He didn’t even know anymore…

He started forward, startled when Griff nearly ran into the truck, and found himself startled into a laugh. He opened it for Griff and climbed in after him.

The trip was okay. Even though Danny’s heart still felt like it was going to hop its way out of his chest, he was almost depressingly happy to be in the other men’s company. Enough so that, when they arrived at the camp site, he even seemed marginally cheered from the nervous state he’d been in before.

“It is beautiful,” he agreed, looking around and smiling. It had been a long time, but it was lovely here, and Danny was very happy to be there. With these two men especially. He turned to smile at them, almost looking like his normal beaming self again. “So! What do we do next?"

Griff felt happy as the truck trundled on it's way through the town and out into the mountains. There was something wonderful and slightly nerve-wracking about the mountains, and he knew he had to tell both men how he felt before they came back, else he never would. He glanced over to Riley and gave him a light hand squeeze, then did the same for Danny, wanting to show them how much he appreciated their company.

Gladys behaved for the most part of the journey. It was only within the last 5 minutes that she realised Danny's scruff was just as delicious as Griff's and practically attached herself to the other man's face. She would have gotten to Riley too - if it weren't for Griff's intervention at the last minute.

When they arrive, Griff eagerly hopped out of the truck and nervously jumped about a moment to get his legs working again. He then grabbed his giant rucksack with a large amount of camping gear and gave a grin. "It's amazing." He breathed, keeping one hand on Gladys' lead. Really, it was. It made him think of Mount Snowdon in the Spring, all it needed was a few more sheep...

"Well, why don't we hike up to a good camping spot and then set up for the day?" He suggested cheerily. "Gladys could do with the walk." The goat bleated, and tugged the short doctor towards a clump of particularly enticing grass, tail beating the air. "So could I, knowing you two has made me gain weight." He grinned and rubbed his stomach, then gestured at a beautiful hilly site. "How about there?"

Riley simply smiled when his hand was claimed in Griff's and the whole ride was spent with the grin on his face.

The suggested plan had Riley nodding along and he started to unload the truck, laughing at Griff's statement. "You look great, what are you even talking about?" Riley said without thinking.

He hefted his backpack up his shoulder and followed Griff's gaze to the site and nodded. "That looks good." He locked up his truck, now that everything was out of it and pocketed his keys. Picking up what he can, he waited for the other two to follow suit.

Danny in turn didn’t seem to mind the goat’s attention. He laughed as she started nibbling on it and nudged her away a couple of times, playfully, before eventually giving up and letting her much to her heart’s content. Well, he was going to look a little patchy for a few days, but that was all right. He didn’t think either of the two men would mind. Or he hoped they wouldn’t. They all wouldn’t be looking their best after this trip anyways.

He grinned at Griff as he said it was amazing, almost feeling normal again, then nodded in agreement to Riley’s statement. “I don’t think you gained weight,” he said, smiling at him. “Not at all. “ He picked up some of the other packs and glanced over at the site, then back at the other two men. It looked lovely. And maybe there, maybe over a fire and some smores or something, he could talk to them about how he felt. Or maybe that should wait until later. He just wished he knew…

Griff chuckled and blushed when both men said he wasn't gaining weight at all. "It'll be all the jogging." He said humbly, shuffling his feet and setting up down the path, letting Gladys trot ahead and generally frolic. She seemed even more excited than her owner was about the trip.

"It's been a while since I've set up this tent, so we might struggle." He admitted with a blush, grinning lopsidedly. "Are any of you tent experts?" He offered hopefully, passing by a girl he'd seen in the doctors several times and giving her a cheery wave. Seemed he was settling into Pilot Ridge so quickly now, everyone was a friendly face.

After a hike up the hill, he dropped the rucksack down and stared over at the mountains, sucking in a lung of air. "Beautiful." He breathed, looking around. This really was a good idea.

"See, majority wins." Riley chuckled, bumping Griff's shoulder with his forearms. "Whatever you're doing, keep it up." He smiled as they moved to their site. When Griff waved to the woman, Riley smiled briefly at her retreating back, wondering if Griff actually knew her or was just that friendly.

"It's okay. Among the three of us, we'll figure it out!" He said encouragingly. All three of them seemed in such awe of the whole place as they hiked up the hill. It really wasn't much of a surprise on Riley's part. The place really was amazing. And there was a saying he remembered that went along the lines of having the right company helped make things even more beautiful.

Eyeing his two [and a half, including Gladys] companions, he sure thought that was accurate.

Setting everything down, he looked around for the tent and went about trying to figure things out. "Let's set up the tent shall we?" He looked up to Griff and Danny with a smile.

“Aw.” Danny smiled in spite of himself. “That’s good that you do that! I never did that.” He blushed. “I just eat lots of sugar.” And then stopped eating for long periods at a time when he got focused on a task. Yes, Danny was one of those people and proud of it. Well, not proud. Just that he recognized it and shrugged and laughed it off. He didn’t mind. He was sure it wasn’t healthy for him, but he had fun anyways.

“Well I can help,” he agreed. “And like Riley said—with three of us, we should figure it out.” He made it up the tree and looked around curiously. It was beautiful. And he felt better now that he was here. Maybe he could figure everything out after all—it could work out.

He looked around at the top of the hill and smiled, glancing over at Griff and nodding. “It is,” he agreed quietly. He laughed, then turned to Riley. “Sure!”

It didn’t seem that difficult. But then, as it had been a while, that conviction only lasted as long as he pulled out the instructions. Then he stared and looked at the others.

“Um. It looks really complicated.”
