Graduation was four fays from today. Braxton never thought this day would arrive. Well, yes, he knew it would actually arrive one day if the world doesn't end before but at the beginning it felt so far away that it still felt so impossible to finally be out of high-school in just four short days. He couldn't avoid counting the days, anxiety was consuming him. He actually went from one cigarette a day to three, all because of the anxiety. Fortunately all his work was done by now and he could rest while waiting.
But then the call came. It was from father. It had been such a long time since Brax and him talked that he couldn't even recognize his voice. Serious as usual, he said that he and his mother were arriving later at Pilot Ridge to be present at their graduation. He said that they just called Sawyer and that the four of them would meet in their hotel's restaurant for dinner. All that could pass through Braxton's mind was one single word: CRAP.
Clearing his schedule for that afternoon, he called off his date and picked nice clothes to wear that day: plain white t-shirt, clean black jeans and simple white Converse. No belt, no socks. He took only his cellphone, almost empty wallet and off to his, open sarcasm, happy family reunion, close sarcasm.
The hotel was nice, the nicest one Braxton had seen in the small town: two stories high and with a rather old and tradional design. He entered and asked firstly about the restaurant, he was directed to it and arrived not one minute after, and before the one in charge asked him if he desired a table, he shrugged him off and walked to his parents table in the back.
Gabriel and Emily were nicely dressed, as usual, but not over the top formal. He looked at them estranged, it had been a little over a year since he last saw them and it felt so strange. Emily still looked the same, surgery and treatments were most likely doing the trick, but Gabriel, he definitely looked so much older. He didn't feel bad about him, he had already learned to not care too much about them, but still, it made him feel weird, he did not expected it, but then again, he did not expected nothing about that day's happenings.
"Father. Mother." He said formally. It felt so weird to address them in person again, he didn't even know where to look. "How was your trip?"
"Boring." Gabriel said with a strangely steady voice for an old man. "And they don't let me smoke here! Who do they think they are."
"It is a closed space, father." Braxton remembered that smoking was perhaps the only trait he shared with his adoptive father.
"And Sawyer? Why didn't you come with her?" Emily and her still-very-red hair asked with her formally soft voice.
What to answer to that? It was a rather strange question since the Carson couple knew that the Carson children couple were not exactly close to each other, but still, answering that he didn't know and didn't care (that much), which was the truth, didn't seem like a good idea to say to their oh-so-loving-and-caring parents, so perhaps he was to lie.
