Business was surprisingly good, considering what it was Michael was selling. Perhaps drug dealers were scarce in Pilot Ridge. Whatever the case, more clients meant more money, and as long as he had dust to spare he was more than happy to continue to offer his services. And besides, there were much, much worse substances that he could have been selling. Pixie dust was pure, unadulterated. He made plenty on his own so there was no need to add anything to cut it. Although demand was slowly increasing. Silently he joked to himself that he could always add confectioner's sugar if he really had to add anything.

Not that he ever would. He had some scrap of integrity left.

Finishing a transaction with a rather wiry and jumpy client, he couldn't help but notice the teenagers walking by the alleyway, just every now and again. At this time of the evening? Surely they should be studying or something? Or doing anything other than hanging around near alleyways where less respectable fellows could take advantage.

Michael, at that point in time, had no intention of letting them even touch the bags that contained the dust, and as he bid farewell to the wiry boy, he attempted to quickly shove the other bags into his coat. Having seen him drop one, his faithful Weimaraner gave a sharp bark, and he turned back to grab the dust before it fell into someone else's hands. Never mind the DNA evidence all over the bag; he wasn't giving this stuff away.

AJ was excited, not only because he and Jared had managed to drag Izzy to the ice cream shop for the third time that week. Or because he had finished a huge banana split sundae (although the sugar speeding through his veins was causing him to bounce a little higher as he walked along the street). Or even just because he was hanging out with his best-est buds. (He was already including Izzy into their duo...trio.)

No, AJ was excited because he'd just seen a bag of something that looked a lot like some sort of glittery powdered sugar fall out of the coat of an old man standing near an alley. After all it wasn't every day that he witnessed an old man dropping bags of sugar along the sidewalk.

"Did you see that?" he asked Izzy and Jared as he came to a dead stop in his walking. He pointed towards the old man and his dog. "What kinda guy like that carries around sugar in a baggie?" He started walking towards the old man in question, without waiting to see if Jared or Izzy would follow.

"Hey mister," he said to the man. "Whatcha got there?" Although AJ never noticed anything about people's emotions or subtle hints of sarcasm, he was always quick to pick out if someone was wearing two different socks or dropped something. He reached out a hand towards the man's dog to pat it on the head, before turning back to the man. "If you're lookin for a good sugar rush, you should get one of those funky monkey sundaes over there," he pointed back towards the general direction of the ice cream shop. "They are amazing[/b!" he said, grinning with pleasure.

He looked back a his two pals, wondering if they would join in with his recommendation to the old man.

"See what?" asked Izzy, stopping to turn to AJ. His brain was more or less still back in the ice cream shop, while simultaneously rehashing the song he was trying to memorize. He couldn't quite think of the rhyme, and it had sufficiently distracted him from whatever it was that AJ was noticing. Not that Izzy was all that observant to begin with.

"Sugar?" repeated Izzy. "That's weird."

He'd heard of putting some substances in bags and selling it. Most of the memoirs he read about musicians mentioned buying stuff like that. But even he'd never heard of putting sugar into a bag, and, surprisingly, he wasn't quite old enough to have run into anything like that, even in his gigs.

"I don't think he wants to be bothered," muttered Izzy. He thought about grabbing AJ and pulling his friend back. This guy really didn't look like the kind of old man you wanted to see in an alley. In fact, he kind of looked like an old guy who tore faces off and talked about how delicious human liver tasted. Then again, Izzy had thought that about the nice janitor, so he wasn't certain that his judgements were really all that sound.

"He probably doesn't want us bothering him," insisted Izzy. Another step closer, and this time, he was tugging on AJ. "Sorry about him. He's just, uh friendly. Nice dog."

{It's sad that you're relying on Izzy to be the brains here, really. Gotta warn you though, someone this obsessed with music is gonna know about drugs...}

Water bottle in hand, Jared took another big gulp as they trotted along the Pilot Ridge sidewalks. While he’d normally be seen skipping happily with AJ after such a rush, he may have eaten a bit too much this day as he suddenly feels so dry and parched. All that sugar totally dehydrated his mouth that he even has to force himself to salivate by repeatedly opening and closing his mouth because water isn’t enough. Unfortunately for him though, the cold weather’s making his rehydration somewhat of a bad thing. Already, he can feel that familiar sensation that his bladder’s close to exploding.

Hopefully they’ll reach Hammel in time.

So engrossed was he in juggling between controlling his bladder and satisfying his undying quench that he would’ve missed the whole thing had he not noticed his two pals veering off from their usual path. “Yow guys wait up!” he yelled as he crossed the street, narrowly missing the blue car that appeared out of nowhere.

“Who’re you?” asked the boy bluntly, looking at the old man with a mixture of suspicion and fear. For some reason, the old man reminds him of another old man that he passes by daily back in Vancouver. Jared liked hiding behind the hedges of his frontyard whenever he’s playing hide and seek with his friends. Not because he’s fully concealed, but because the old man’s such a grump almost everyone’s scared to be around his house. “Is he your grandpa AJ? And what sugar are you talking about?”

He had tried his best to keep the bag out of view of the boys (and anyone else who might have been watching) but by the time he'd got it into his hand, the first boy had already made it to his side. And he was a nosy one, which was always just wonderful. For the smallest sliver of a moment, he considered rapping the child's legs with his cane before storming away, but ultimately decided that it was rude, uncalled for, and probably not advisable now that he was no longer in the alley.

Instead, he shoved the bag deep into his pocket and raised an eyebrow at the boy, wondering whether he should tell him to go home or wherever else he might be headed and forget the incident, or perhaps pretend that he was rather senile and hadn't a clue what he was talking about.

"It doesn't concern you, now, does it?" he said, deciding that, should he attempt to play senile that the kid would probably become quite unbearable trying to find the bag. Personal space wasn't a phrase that seemed to exist in modern vernacular. Looking at each new arrival in turn, he shook his head in annoyance. "All you need to know is that it's not sugar and not for you."

Meanwhile, Isis sniffed suspiciously at the boys before allowing the first to pet her. Perhaps they weren't really a threat, then. Isis, he had often noted, could apparently sense ignorance.

AJ was even more confused that Izzy about why a man would have sugar in a bag. Although he’d heard of drugs before, he wouldn’t really know what they looked like. Since he didn’t watch many movies, or understand half of what his generation was joking about, he just assumed it was something he would never come in contact with so he didn’t think about it much.

He certainly wasn’t thinking about it now. Not with so much ice cream and candy coursing through his veins. He continued to pet the man’s dog while giving him a confused look. “I don’t think he’s my grandpa,” he said in answer to Jared’s question. “But I wouldn’t know for sure, since I don’t remember ever meeting my grandpa. Actually, I think he’s dead. But I should still have another one, right?”

He tried to brush off Izzy’s tugging. “I’m not bother him,” he said under his breath to his friend. “I’m just curious. No harm in that.”

“Well if it’s not sugar then – “ AJ, still trying to pull away from Izzy, tripped and fell close to the older man. “ – what is it?” Even the pain of his knee on the sidewalk couldn’t stop his wondering.
