Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice (Basil)

Sage had been downtown a few times, but he had never really walked into any stores other than the basic general store and the book store. Today, he decided to look a little deeper, and he stopped upon seeing an interesting place, called ’Sil’s Spices. He had heard a few things about this place, and he wondered if perhaps there was something here that could help make the plant in his dorm healthier. Howell would definitely be excited if he came home with something new as well. It wasn’t like the plant they had bought together was a pet or anything, but it was a living thing nonetheless that needed care.

The boy stepped inside, eyes glancing around every which way at the plants around him, checking the little tags beneath each when he found one that appealed to him. However, he then came across one that seemed awfully familiar. It was green and leafy, stretching up like sunflower, and towards the top there were a few bell shaped purple flowers. The plant was soft to the touch, almost fuzzy feeling, and the boy’s emerald eyes trailed down to the label. It figures that he would stop in front of this specific plant. Sage was what the label said, and the boy shook his head with a smile, his body emitting a faint glow that could have been mistaken for the sunlight coming from outside.

The bells rang, telling him someone was in the shop. Basil had only been in the back for a few moments, just long enough to cut fresh flowers, but it was usually when he was away from the counter that someone came calling. He gathered the flowers neatly in a basket, taking the other necessary supplies with him so that he could work at the counter and get these nicely arranged together. The person he saw when he walked into the shop was about student age. So either the high school, or Hammel. While he wasn't the kind of person to make snap judgements something about the youngster just screamed Hammel.

When he stopped in front of one of the plants Basil decided to go over and greet him. From the corner of his eye he noticed it was a sage plant, which gave him a slight zing of guilt. There were quite a few of them around the shop, for more reasons than just to have them there.

" Hello young man, is there anything I can help you with?" His tone was friendly and bright, his smile matching. He finally noticed a slight glow around the boy, making him feel more sure of his assumption that this boy was definitely most likely a Hammel student.

Sage stared at the plant for another few moments until he was approached by the shop owner. The man was middle-aged, but had an air of wisdom around him. The boy could tell the man cared deeply about the care of his plants, and if anyone could tell him what would keep their little house plant healthy, it would be him.

“Oh, hello. I was actually wondering if you knew anything about Spider plants? My roommates and I got a plant for our dorm, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to know more about them”

Sage wasn’t about to attempt pronouncing the scientific name of the plant, and asking Howell about that stuff was somewhat useless, since he was easily distracted and would probably try to feed the plant jellybeans. He also could have asked Alyss, but she was busy on this particular day, and he wanted to take the opportunity to look around.

“I guess I’m worried I might over water it, but sunlight isn’t an issue…”
