Minions (Cobalt, Avi)

[Leila Gold]

Leila insisted on the office being constantly kept open and welcoming. She knew that if it was left to Cobalt, it would turn into a dark and forbidding zone, filled with shadows and darkness. Which was why, when she had the chance and the weather was still good enough, she tried to leave doors and windows open to let in the sunlight and a bit of a breeze.

Though it was slowly shifting into October, today was another fairly warm day, and so Leila had the door propped open a tad and all the curtains open to let in the sunlight.

"I'm going to get a flat bottom from all the sitting I've been doing," she complained as she pushed herself away from the desk. "We haven't been to open court in two weeks. And I know that's a good thing, it's just so...so boring. We haven't even had any difficult negotiations. No one to argue with, just...just paperwork. Honestly, Blue, what are we going to do with ourselves?"

She was hardly expecting a real response. Standing, she stretched and made her way into the back for some coffee. She was still fixing up her cup in the back when the door opened, so she didn't hear anyone else come in for a moment.

Sticking her head around the side of the door frame, though, when she caught the sound of voices in the main room, she smiled. "Avi!" she exclaimed, coming out holding her cup of coffee. She set the mug on her desk and walked over to the girl.

"Cobalt, this is Avi," she said, standing next to her. "She's from Hammel. She's an aerokinetic, like me. Isn't that amazing? We're going to work together and practice our air-bending. Not for very long, just a little bit. I told her to stop by the office whenever she had free time--I assured her that you wouldn't mind." And she gave him another huge smile.

Avi had free time. Free time meant that she could go visit one of her favorite people. She had been practicing! She was now able to get the small whirlwind to stay for longer then she had at the start. It really was amazing. Much more amazing to her then Leila would ever know. Mostly because Leila was much more of a help then any trainer thus far. She could show her how to not only control, but keep it going for a while. That made Avi incredibly happy and ecstatic about her chance meeting with the extraordinary person named Leila.

Leila had scrawled the address of where she would be if there was free time on a piece of paper for Avi.She had ventured into Pilot Ridge that day, looking for the office and the address that Leila had given her. She had finally found the place hidden in the downtown heart of the town. It was smallish but from the Blue and Gold sign outside of the building she figured she had found the right place. Now only to find Leila.

Walking into the small space she looked around looking for her mentor. She frowned realizing she was no where in sight and the only person around was an old dude with a mustache. Avi didn't really care what the man thought of her and was thinking hard before walking over to him and looking the shorter man over. His hair was a mess and his glasses were a bit crooked. Giving a smirk she looked at him again before saying, “Hey old dude, wheres the boss?” Avi watched as the much older man's face contorted with confusion and annoyance. “You know, short blond woman?” Avi motioned with her hands. “ About yea high?”

She was just about to go off on another interrogation with the man when she heard Leila from the other room. Smiling she went over to meet her giving her a hug as she came closer. “Leila! Man this place is small, I had a bit of trouble finding it. Now you have got to explain the name to me. I am very curious after all.” Honestly Avi wasn't paying a lick of attention t the man that was watching them, probably wondering who the hell she was. She just smirked as Leila released her from the hug and started to explain to the man. “Yup, though, Leila is much more awesome at her power then I am. Oh! That reminds me! I have something to show youuuuuuuuu~”

No, Avi wasn't hyper at all.

Cobalt smirked slightly, not looking up from the paperwork he was filling out himself. “I don’t know,” He said, his voice colored with mock-concern, “We will probably just die. It will be terrible and awful and everyone will cry at our funerals.” He snickered slightly as she brushed past him to get coffee.

He looked up when the door opened, and was slightly startled to see a young, blonde teenager with wind ruffled hair that didn’t seem to stop moving when she got inside. Cobalt raised an eyebrow, slightly suspicious, and was about to ask her if she needed help when she started talking.

Oh good, his life would just be full of mouthy, young, blonde aerokinetics. Cobalt didn’t even care that two was hardly full, but it was enough for Cobalt.

“I am the—” But then Leila came in again and introduced the teenager to Cobalt. The older attorney nodded slightly, staring from one blonde woman to the other as they shrieked at each other.

Cobalt raised a teasing eyebrow at Leila, “So wait. You’re going to teach power stuff to someone? That sounds dangerous. I’ll await the call that you’ve accidentally knocked down a building.” He was teasing, of course. And he knew Leila would be able to tell, even though he sounded mostly disdainful. It was just how they worked.

"I can teach!" Leila stuck her tongue out at Blue. Being around someone younger than her made her degenerate back to childhood...or maybe it was just feeling like she had to retort in some way to her dad. "Don't worry, we'll be sure it's an abandoned building. Or we'll at least evacuate it first."

She turned back to Avi. "Yeah, it's a bit small, but it works for us. I mean, it's just the two of us here, not like we need a lot of space. Unless you count the coffee machine, which might sometimes be considered the third resident." A thought came to her suddenly--she should name the coffeepot. Carl. She'd get a plaque and everything, but as soon as she could it might be worth it to tape a nametag to him.

"The name is a combination of our names. Gold, that's my last name, and Blue, for shorty over there." Yes, pot calling the kettle black. But she also knew that it annoyed Cobalt more when she called him short. "His first name is Cobalt, a shade of blue. I thought the color theme worked well. Better than Cobalt Weaver, Attorney-at-law, which is what he had before. I mean, how gross is that? It's a good thing I showed up, let me tell you."

Leila couldn't forget that Cobalt was still there--he was probably starting to get quite annoyed. His patience only stretched so far. And much as she was sure he cared about her, that wouldn't prevent him from throwing her out of the building, whether politely or not so kindly.

But she was slightly distracted by Avi's announcement? "Really? Show me! And I've thought of somethings I can show you. Like ways to check to see if someone is wearing a wig." Leila grinned mischievously. She'd thought of that trick after someone had made a comment about Cobalt's hair. And she'd tried it. It was real.

"Oh, hey, so, it won't be a big deal if we just do some quick stuff in here, right?" she asked Cobalt. "It'll just take a moment, I'm sure."

Avi bristled as the short dude started to tell her that Leila couldn't teach. That was so not true. Frowning she looked him up and down. There was no way this rude, and obviously wrong, person could be the boss. It made much more sense for Leila to be the boss. “ I bet you it is a lot more dangerous if she doesn't help me.” Avi was starting to get annoyed by this old fellow. Who was he to say she couldn't be taught by Leila. That was almost insulting her personally. If you thought about it he was saying that she wasn't good enough to even be taught by Leila. “I'm sure she is much better at it then you are old dude.”

If you couldn't tell Avi's feathers were ruffled. She didn't appreciate her mentor being insulted. Especially by someone older then both of them combined. He was going to die soon anyway right? What he said didn't really matter then did it? Grinning at the thought Avi looked over at her mentor as she stuck her tongue out at the old dude. Giggling she laughed as Leila did so and nodded at the mention of an abandoned building. “Good idea Leila! I wouldn't want to hurt anyone and it is better for the sake of practicing.” Avi's eyes lit up at the suggestion.

Listening intently Avi nodded as Leila explained about the name. It definitely fit the two of them. Leila was like a gold radiant star burning bright in the dark blue night, always shining and showing her true radiance. The short dude on the other hand was dark and seemed depressed and gloomy. He didn't really seem to have a good time at anything, other then insulting her mentor. That was what made Avi mad in the slightest “ The color scheme works well. I think it also describes your personalities as well.” Avi gave a grin before continuing. “ Well as much as I can tell from this slight meeting between the old dude and now.”

Did Avi care if old dude wanted her to call him that or not? Nope, not a bit. Avi grinned. She knew that the dude would learn to get used to it. At least that is what she was calling him until she could think of a better nickname. Really Mr Weaver? That just didn't fit him and she wasn't about to call him by his first name. That of course was just rude.

When Leila turned to face her again Avi gave a proud grin and nodded. “ I finally got that thing working, I got it to stay for a little while to. I want you to time me today! Also I sort am working on a surprise.” Avi grinned and eyed the shorter blond. “ Though that's for later when I can show you in that abandoned building. Alone. ” Giving a small smirk Avi eyed shortie. “Why do I have a feeling that was tested?” Avi grinned and looked over at Leila. “ I can't wait for you to show me.”

When Leila looked over to Cobalt, Avi glared. He better let them practice. It had take work to even find that place and if he was going to throw her out so soon, well lets just say Avi would not be a happy camper.

Cobalt snorted at Leila’s face, “I can see. You’re being very professional at the moment.” When she explained what she may be doing, Cobalt had to laugh a little, “Oh god, you are going to explode something.” He would have teased further when the other blonde girl—Avi?—piped up. Cobalt gave her a slightly quizzical look. Not because he couldn’t detect her sass, because that much was fairly obvious, but he wasn’t quite sure what she wanted him to say to that. “…It’s true,” Cobalt finally responded, a little bemused and mostly dismissive, “Because I am neither an aerokinetic nor a teacher, so there you go.”

Cobalt made a grumpy noise at Leila, “There is nothing wrong with the way it was before. It’s my name and my occupation. Seems pretty straightforward to me.” He gave her A Look about the whole “short” thing. Really, he expected better insults than that from her, but he also figured it was probably poor form to insult him in front of some teenager, who seemed to have taken what meager teasing Leila and Cobalt had given between themselves as permission to be sassy. At least Leila had waited until day two before she sassed him.

And this girl wasn’t even being very clever with her sass, which was disappointing. She was mostly just being irritating, but Cobalt chose not to comment much on it. He supposed it was a little endearing, that Leila found herself a little admirer. He did shoot the girl a raised eyebrow when she smirked at him. Because there really was a limit to his patience. Even if this was mostly funny.

Cobalt gave Leila a look that was slightly accusatory and slightly revelatory. So that was why she had kept trying to blow his head around the first few days of working with him. He chose to say nothing for the sake of whatever dignity he had left.

Of course when Leila asked to use the office, Cobalt was going to say yes. But when Avi leveled a glare that she probably thought was effective, Cobalt was suddenly tempted to say no, just to see what she’d do. However, he was not that much of an immature jerk, so he waved a hand and said, “Yeah, do whatever.”

Leila caught the dismissive tone in Cobalt's voice. He wasn't completely annoyed, but he wasn't overly happy, either. Not that she'd expected him to be giddy for her, but some of Avi's barbs irked her.

"All right, that's enough picking on Blue," she said, trying to cut in. "He doesn't deserve half as much of the sass I give him, so I guess we should let up." Meaning Avi should. Leila was allowed to pick on Cobalt, but if someone else wanted to pick a fight, they had to go through her first.

She smiled a little when Avi remarked on their personality types. "Yeah, I guess it does. But you can feel free to call him Mr. Weaver. Or Cobalt." You have to earn the right to call him anything else. That was, at least, what Leila felt. She was only slightly possessive of Blue. But for her to resist teasing him herself was probably asking too much of the blonde lawyer.

"That's great!" Leila exclaimed. "I'm glad you've found time to practice. It's a challenge sometimes, but I think the results are worth it." She watched the glares pass between Cobalt and Avi, and with a reluctant sigh she realized that it was probably a bad idea for them to spend much more time in the office.

"You know," she said slowly, "It might be a better idea if we moved somewhere anyway. We don't want to mess up any of the papers in here, and I know Blue still has a lot of work to do. Like you said, it's pretty small here, and we don't want to disrupt anyone. How about we go find somewhere else, okay?"

She offered a conciliatory smile to Cobalt. "Don't worry, Blue, we'll get out of your hair. I'll see you later this afternoon, okay?"

Avi smiled as Cobalt agreed with her and was about to say something else when Leila told her no. And that she had done wrong. Avi's entire body slumped, it was her fault? She had done something wrong? She didn't know what to do. She was just being herself. Avi bit her lip looking from Cobalt to Leila. She didn't want to disappoint Leila, yet she knew in the back of her head she was being just the tiniest of bits rude. Sighing she walked over to Cobalt looked him straight in the eye, her back straight, posture perfect and shakiy took a breath. “ I am sorry sir. I did not mean to offend you in any way. That was just me being my smart ass normal self, and if it aggravated you I apologize.”

Avi turned and walked back to Leila. She would call him Sir from now on, at least until she figured out a suitable nickname. Mr. Weaver just reminded her of beaver and that just reminded her of Bieber, and she just couldn't picture Cobalt in her head as Justin Bieber. For everyone's sanity she couldn't. Cobalt didn't work because it sounded depressing and just plain wrong. She would and could think up a suitable nickname, it would just take time. Sir it was then.

Avi smiled over at Leila as she was praised, her mood once again rising. “ It was fun practicing, once I finally figured out that it was ok to not get it.” That was something else Avi was learning. It was ok to fail at her powers, you just had to keep practicing to get it right. Looking over at Cobalt she smiled. It must have taken a lot of practice for him to get into law. In honesty she was curious about it and what it implied. She had heard it was best to go into if you liked to argue, and Avi loved to argue. She could argue just for the sake of arguing if she wanted to some times.

“How did you get into law Sir?” The questions slipped out of her mouth before Avi heard Leila suggest moving into a different place. She had messed up again hadn't she. Sighing she looked down. She didn't intentionally cause trouble. It was all his fault. She was being normal and he went and ruined it. She silently grabbed her stuff waiting for Leila. “I guess.”

Avi was just starting to get used to the office and the place up until then. She thought about it and smiled the place felt sort of right. Like it was exactly how it was supposed to be and she was intruding. Maybe that's why she was acting more of a smart ass then normal. Maybe she wanted to belong there too. Shaking her head at the impossibility Avi just sighed and looked back towards Leila and Cobalt standing at the door. “Ill get out of your hair Sir. Sorry for the disruption.”

Cobalt was actually surprised when Leila cut in and tried to do some manner of regulation on the amount of sass being flung at him. He was tempted to say that the fact of deserving sass had never stopped her before, but he resisted. He actually wasn’t all that interested in undermining her authority in front of the young teenager who seemed so taken with her.

And then when Avi felt compelled to apologize and call him sir, Cobalt had to stop from laughing, just a little bit. It was a rather earnest apology, and he could tell that it hurt her pride, so instead he said, “It’s no problem. Thank you for the apology. And Leila’s right, you can call me Mr. Weaver or Cobalt if that makes you feel more comfortable.” He could make nice if he really felt like it, and he didn’t see what he would gain by debating with this strange teenager.

He began moving papers around on his desk, searching for a specific one as Leila talked to Avi about practicing powers. The lucky thing about his own, he reflected, idly spinning shadows through the fingers of his left hand as he picked up at pencil with his right, was that he never had to practice much. The only upside about not having an interesting power.

At Avi’s question, Cobalt looked back up, “Hm? Oh, I was always interested in helping people, and I enjoy telling people why they’re wrong.” He gave her a slight smile before Leila informed them that she and Avi were heading out instead.

“All right, Lee,” Cobalt nodded, “Have fun, see you later.”

He shook his head when Avi started apologizing, “No disruption. You didn’t even break the window.” He flashed Leila a sly grin, knowing she would understand the joke.

All right, she was being contrite. Leila could've bitten her tongue off, and in fact did bite the insides of her cheeks. She didn't mean to scold Avi, really, just warn her off. Next time she'd have to be more careful what she said.

"It is okay to fail, sometimes," Leila agreed. "Just so long as you don't let the failures define you. Let your life be defined by your success, and let your success come in any form. For example, I find success in catching a particularly nice leaf, or making friends with a particularly cranky person. You can't change the past, but you can learn from it." Leila was likely to go on spouting this motivational mumbo-jumbo for the next ten minutes, so it was good that Avi managed to get in her question to Cobalt.

Leila grinned at her boss. The broken window was a timeless joke--even Leila could see the humor in it now. "Don't hold your breath," she said. "It's only a matter of time before that window breaks again."

She held the door open for Avi and waved goodbye to Cobalt. "Catch you later, you big lug," she said. "Don't worry, you're not getting rid of me quite yet."

Avi's head was still ducked down, her long blond hair falling into her face, shielding it. She wasn't one to admit she was wrong easily but that was what she had to do apparently. She didn't like it and would in the future take careful responsibility to not do it again.

As Leila began to speak Avi felt like she should have a notepad and pen around. She should be writing this stuff down. It was valuable words and she should bear witness to them instead of disregard them. She wondered what Leila meant by making friends with a cranky person, but it quickly flew out of her head as Cobalt addressed her. Avi had to grin at the names given and instead smiled. "I'll find a suitable nickname yet.


It was then that she saw the shadows grinning she looked over at Cobalt and smiled wide. "Shadow works I think. Yea it does. " Avi grinned. She was already calling him that in her head. " I dub thee Shadow." Avi burst into a fit of giggles before commenting again on how he got into law. " That sounds like an excellent job." Avi's mind was filled with the possibilities of being a lawyer now. It was something for her to think of.

Avi smiled as the broken window came up, she didn't know just what happened but it seemed that the mood was much lighter. She smiled as she went towards the door and grinned liking the little place they called their office. "This place grows on you."

Avi walked out of the office a smile on her face. "See you later ShadowMan." Yes, now that you've given Avi a location she will be bugging you on a semi regular basis. It was your own fault ShadowMan, well it was partly Leila's fault as well, but Avi preferred to place the blame on ShadowMan. Besides. He would grow to love her. They always did.
