Moving (Cobalt)

It had started a few weeks ago with some conversations she'd been having. There was her talk with Avi, and her lunch with Terrence, and a lot of time spent thinking on her own. Once she'd come to a conclusion, she still had a long way to go, but before she could do anything else she had to breach the first hurdle.

There was nothing particularly special about that day when Leila went to work. She almost wished it would be special, since it felt like such a big step she was taking. Well, it was a big step. Would be. Shaking her head to calm some of her nerves, she walked into the office.

"Hey Blue," she said with a nervous smile. "I need to talk to you about something. Do you uh, do you want a cup of coffee or something first? Maybe you want to be sitting..." She twirled a strand of hair around one finger and bit her lip.

"So, this is about the shop. There's some...some big news. And I need you to be the first to know." She took a deep breath and reached into her briefcase, then pulled out a crisp sheet of paper and handed it over to him.

"It's my letter of resignation. I'll be leaving probably next summer, I just wanted to give you a lot of advance warning. I've decided to go into politics."

She sat anxiously on the edge of her chair and tapped her fingers against the briefcase while chewing on her bottom lip. Waiting for the coming conversation, where she would be made to feel like a jerk for walking out on him.

“Hey, Lee,” Cobalt greeted absently, leafing through a stack of paper as she came in. Her nervous tone made him look up, however, and frown slightly. “…Um. No, I’ve got coffee. Is everything…?”

She handed him a sheet of paper, which he took, blinking in surprise when she explained that it was a letter of resignation. Leaving next summer. Cobalt sighed a little, because of course he was a little sad, but he hardly expected her to stay here forever. He wouldn’t have wanted her to stay here forever.

After a moment, Cobalt looked up at her, taking in her anxious surprise. “So,” He put her letter in a desk drawer, “Politics, huh? What are your plans? Because if you’re planning on the position of dictator, I would at least like to know when this is happening. Don’t want the invasion to be on a day I have plans, I would hope evil overlords could understand that.” He grinned slightly.

OOC: I apologize profusely for starting and then completely forgetting this thread.

Leila breathed a small sigh of relief. "You're not angry?" she asked quietly. "I mean, it's good, I just..." Then she thought back over what all he said.

"Wait, does this mean you aren't surprised? Were you just expecting me to get up and leave at some point? Because that's not very fair to me, you know. I wouldn't be leaving unless I felt it was important. You know that, right?"

And yet...she was still going. And she realized, however reluctantly, that she was probably always going to move on from her position with Blue and Gold.

With a small sigh she leaned forward. "I'm just starting off as a state representative. Not a big position or anything, but I figure...I guess I just want to try to make a difference, you know? And I feel like as long as I'm working as a lawyer, I'm not ever going to be able to change the system. I need to be trying to make the laws, not just argue with them."

Slowly she looked up and gave Cobalt a small smile. "After that, well, we'll see. Sometimes it's easier to be an evil dictator. Then you know everything is run your way. But I'll be sure not to schedule my hostile take-over for your wedding day."

“What? No, of course I’m not angry with you,” Cobalt laughed slightly, the idea absurd to him, “Well, I didn’t expect you to be here forever. I knew you had plans and that you were going somewhere.” At her further question, Cobalt nodded, “Of course I do, hon.”

He listened as Leila explained her basic plans for her future. He grinned, “That sounds like a great plan. I think you’ll be fantastic as a representative. And these plans don’t sound like invasion, so that’s good news for me.”

Cobalt laughed, “Damn. Well, since that’s never going to happen, I will hold you to this. No invasions unless I get married. Got it.”

Leila offered Cobalt a weak smile. She truly was glad that he wasn't angry with her for, as she saw it, abandoning him. He was even being supportive, which was new to her in itself. It was a new realization that he didn't think of her in the same possessive way which she tended to think of him.

"Well, that wasn't exactly what I said, but sure," she said, laughing. "I promise not to invade the world and impose my evil dictatorship until after you are properly settled. After all, how will I find time to rule the world when I'm so busy running your life?" And she rubbed her hands together with glee.

Sobering, she gave him a genuine smile. "I really do appreciate your support, Blue," she said. "It's good to know you believe in me. I was starting to get worried that I had gone crazy and this whole thing was some big fluke. But now...I guess it's all really going to happen, isn't it?" She sat quietly for a few moments, looking at the desk as she sorted through what this would mean for her future.

Suddenly she looked up with a huge grin. "Well, you know what this means!" she chirped. "I guess it's time to break the news to the rest of the Do--boys, and then hit the campaign trail. Not to mention, of course, finding you a replacement assistant." And she stood and leaned across the desk to peck Cobalt on the head with a kiss. "Cheer up, I'll make sure she's just as annoying as I am."

Cobalt was rather taken aback that Leila would expect him to be upset about this in general. But he didn’t press the issue, simply because it really wasn’t all that important. While he considered her a part of his family—such as it was—he didn’t expect her to always be around; that just wasn’t particularly realistic, nor would it have been fair to her. He just hoped she knew that he would always be there for her, should she need it.

“No, I am pretty sure that is what you said,” Cobalt laughed with her, “I am positive you said you would not schedule the invasion on my wedding day. Since I’m never having a wedding, and never getting settled or whatever, then I have successfully thwarted your takeover plans with my bachelorhood. Mwa ha ha.” He grinned, rolling his eyes, “I don’t want that either. I can’t think of a single time your meddling has actually paid off.”

Cobalt returned her smile, “Of course, kid. You’re going to be great. And I’m always here, if you need help or someone to shout at.” He grinned, crossing his arms in front of his chest, “Not that you’ve ever needed my permission to shout at me.”

At her words, Cobalt sputtered, “What? I don’t need a replacement assistant! There’s barely enough work around here for one person. I don’t need someone else. I am quite sure I can handle myself, thank you.”

"You just...your argument..." she said, holding up a finger. "You are spotting the giant holes here, right?" Of course he was. He was a lawyer. And a decent one. But he was also good at twisting words. He just needed to remember that she was, too. She grinned. "Even if you never have a wedding, I can still plan to take over the world. Never said it had to happen after a wedding. Just that it wouldn't happen on your wedding. Your only hope for saving the world is to get married. Every. Single. Day."

She harumphed. "Are you trying to imply that you don't appreciate my help? You should know that I always had the best of intentions. Even if the results were sometimes...less than perfect." With a grin and a shrug, she looked at Blue again. "Can't win 'em all."

Laughing, Leila replied, "No one needs permission to shout at you, you beg for it yourself. I mean, it's practically written on your face. In the form of a giant mustache." She held up her hands to defend any potential blow--old habit. "But seriously, I'm glad to hear that. And you can bet that I'll probably still be popping in a lot to say hi and catch up, not to mention get advice."

She stood and reached over to pat Cobalt on the head. "Don't be silly. The assistant isn't here to do the extra work, they're here to take care of you. Someone has to do it while I'm away. It took me all this time just to get you presentable to the world, and you think I'm just going to give up on that?" She grinned again. "You don't seem to know me very well. Don't worry, I'll make sure the replacement is up to par. I have very high standards."

“No, no,” Cobalt said, laughing, “You said, and I quote, ‘I promise not to invade the world and impose my evil dictatorship until after you are properly settled’. If I never get married, I shall never be “properly settled” in the traditional sense, ergo I win. Additionally, this is an incredibly stupid argument.”

“I appreciate your intentions, then,” Cobalt retorted with a grin, “But no, I don’t appreciate your help. Your help is annoying and full of you getting the wrong idea about things.” Which was only half-true, but whatever.

The shadow manipulator lobbed a crumpled up piece of paper at Leila, “Wha—do… what’s wrong with my moustache?” He thought that was a very odd thing to think weird. Lots of people had moustaches.

“That’s a babysitter,” Cobalt interjected grumpily, “I don’t need a babysitter, I am almost forty-seven years old. I’m presentable. You just want me to talk to more people.” He made a distasteful face, “That sounds awful.”
