Odion was having multiple bad days. The library used to be somewhat of a sanctuary for him, but lately, it was where all the bad luck was happening. Lilly had managed to find him, and well, that went straight to hell. What more did he expect though? Eventually the girl who had fallen for him after he had told him a pack of lies was going to find him, and was going to tell him just how much she hated him. But he wasn’t dreading it because he felt bad, he dreaded it because it was annoying.

Lately he’d been learning new card tricks, but today he just wanted something mundane to focus on. Building a card castle wasn’t too complicated, and it was the perfect bet. He squared his shoulders and took his usual spot by the biggest window. It was so easy to get lost in what went on out there, so easy to space out. But he didn’t want to do that. He had been losing so many days at a time thanks to his power, he would like to be able to keep some of those hours in his memory. Maybe he had been training too much when before, he hadn’t trained at all. It was like his power had come naturally for him. Odion knew, somewhere deep down inside, that the real training hadn’t even started yet.

A flash of bright, too bright hair came into view, and he knew, today was not his lucky day. He set down the next card on the castle, openly ignoring her. Mia. They had ‘met’ once before. But he didn’t want to talk to her, he didn’t want to talk to anyone. Hopefully, the card castle would hide him.

Mia was happy; it had been way too long since she had been genuinely happy. She had gone through so much in the past year, more than any teenager should have to handle. It was a nice change for her, in a way she had to be grateful for her powers because it was the reason she was able to come to Hammel and have that fresh start she was looking for. She didn’t know how much more she could have been able to live in Barrow, she loved it to death, she had great memories there but it didn’t out way the bad memories. That’s why she had decided to stay in Vermont, go to the University that was close to Pilot Ridge and study Psychology so she will be able to help the teenagers hurting just like Dr. Neville was helping her.

Mia walked into the library with a smile on her face. The library was her favorite part of any school. It had books, to keep her mind busy and free from going elsewhere. Not to mention it was a great place to write her letters to her mother and grandmother. It was also a nice place to meet people too; she had met Willow here. A rather nice girl, a bit socially awkward but Mia didn’t mind. She was able to talk enough for the both of them.


She was looking for a corner of the library to hide in to write a letter back home to tell them about her week at the retreat. She was pretty sure her mother would be happy with what she had to say. But life apparently had other plans for her; she smiled as she recognized the ginger who she had met in the ally near the lake. Who knew he went to Hammel; it was a very small world. She walked over to him and sat across from him at the table he was sitting at. “Mind if a join you?” She asked as she took out the hunger games book she was trying to finish. “Why are you building card castles in the library?” The boy’s name escaped her, she didn’t take the extra time in remembering his name considering she thought she never see him again.

Mia had been through a lot this year? Oh, if only she knew what Odi had been through. He had come to Hammel, to America, just to go after Rhett. Then he had to endure all the morons who resided here, like Zachary. Then Rhett had to abandon him without saying a word, just as he was getting ready to move in with the blonde. And then Lani had to come along, and everything just complicated after that. He fell for the telekinetic, and then Declyn had to show up, proclaiming to be his twin brother. From orphan to family member? Mia had no idea.

Odion wasn’t looking for friends, and why people like Mia felt the pull to want anything to do with him was beyond him. He had made a few exceptions to the rule, Lani being one, but Avi definitely being another. But mostly, he pulled away from people. He was alone in the library because he wanted to be, because he needed to think.

Another card on the castle. He and Lani had discussed much. Odi just couldn’t figure out why Lani was still with Adrianna, and not him. Everything was so messed up. And Lani was busy with Caroline too, and Odi still wanted to make a date with all of them. Maybe he could go out and get a couple board games? Was that boring? He sighed, making a face in concentration.

Without even asking if she could, Mia sat down across from him. She only asked as an afterthought. He glanced up from his castle, an annoyed look on his face. If that didn’t drive her away, nothing would. It was really too bad someone in such an exceptionally good mood had decided to befriend someone in an exceptionally bad mood. “Why are you talking in the library?” He asked right back, going back to the castle. No one wanted to push his buttons today.

They had both been through their fair share a pain. But unlike Odi, Mia was trying to get past it, and had learned that being bitter about events that had happened didn’t help anyone. Though she had to go through a near death experience to come to that conclusion and she would never recommend doing it to anyone. She had to endure many mentally abusive remarks from her older classmates and her ex. She knew she had brought that onto herself considering everything but it still hurt. This year she might not have had anything happen guy wise this year but she still knew what it felt like to have someone completely abandon you without a word. And at least his brother was still alive and was trying to reconnect with him.

How was Mia supposed to know he wasn’t looking for friends? Mia always tried to make friends; she figured it was because she was trying to make up for lost time. She felt what is was like to be utterly alone, and what it felt like to have no one truly care. Or so she had thought no one cared…

She only smiled when he looked at her; she was in a really good mood, it would take a lot more than that to get her to leave at the moment. No it probably wasn’t, but then again Mia wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box when it came to social situations. “Because I like talking? You know it’s rude to answer a question with a question also it’s very annoying. Mia wasn’t getting that he wanted to be left alone, but she also knew that loners tended to be mean and tough but deep inside they really wanted to have friends. This is why she stuck around.

Just because they had met once before, didn’t mean he was interested in being her friend. In fact, he found her as a whole, uninteresting. She was a pathetic creature with futile ideas and stupid song lyrics who felt sorry for herself. A pity party, as she so eloquently put it.

No, apparently she wasn’t going to let up. Odion tried not to clench his fists but instead, he twitched his hands, making the card castle come tumbling down. He held in a scream and let the cards lie where they may. He leaned forward a bit on the table, staring at her with intense dark blue eyes.

“Let me ask you something, Mia Victoria Bell,” he started, his gaze bearing into her soul, “are you really very sad over losing your father and brother? Is that why you slit your wrists? Or is it because you can’t get over yourself and how pathetic you are over losing your boyfriend?” Every word was spoken with intention, every line meant to hit home like a wasp sting entering a vital part of the body. He could only hope she was allergic.

“And for the record,” he added for good measure, making to collect his cards, “Paris is a horrible place to visit.”

Mia looked at him with shock written all over her face. How did he know her whole name? She never told him, she barely even told anyone her last name. She didn’t look away she didn’t flinch at his words as he continued to speak. She bit down on her bottom lip, now it made sense; he was the one who had stolen her notebook. In a matter of seconds, it started thundering, lightning and raining. Every word he said had hit it’s mark but she didn’t show it, water was starting to build in her eyes but other than the thunder storm that was it.

The teenager heard all of it before; there wasn’t anything he could say to her that someone else hadn’t already said. “You bastard.” She mumbled. At first that was all she could find the words to say. She knew how to act tough; it was something she had to do for the past year, act as if she was made of steel. She learned the hard way the more emotion she showed the more they made fun of her and bullied her.

But then he said something about Paris and a slight smile appeared. “Ah why not?” She leaned in just as he had done. “Bad memories?” She stood up and moved her hand to sweep most of the cards onto the floor. “Let’s get a few things straight. I can be just as much of an ass as you are; you’re fighting fire with fire. And there is nothing you can say to me that I haven’t heard before.” She turned to leave; she wasn’t going to stick around for him to say anything else about her. He might have read everything there was to know about her. But he didn’t feel her pain.

As she walked away, her back toward him, tears started to roll down her cheeks. She was all talk and no play; she didn’t know anything about the boy; hell she couldn’t even remember his name. But as far as he would know, this wasn’t effecting her the way it really was.

Near death experience? From what, cutting herself? Had she ever been abandoned to fate? Been raised by gypsies? Been forced to live on the streets and learn how to steal in order to survive? Had she been a part of a gang and then been deemed a meta human? Maybe the last part they had in common, but what did that matter? Her and everyone else in this school had powers, and that didn’t make them special, it made them all freaks. At least Odi’s power did make him green, and at least it was useful, especially for stealing.

It wasn’t that Odi wasn’t trying to get past all this, he was just having a hard time doing it. There wasn’t enough good to balance out the bad in his life, especially when all of that good had only been recent. Maybe things would even out eventually, but he wasn’t the good person Lani and Avi believed him to be. He just wasn’t. Life was cruel and unfair, and Odion didn’t care about other the way people should. He had tried, and then had been hurt. He wasn’t going to allow that to happen again. Mia wasn’t worth his time.

Odion could have people react in any way he wanted. If the message wasn’t clear before, it better be now. He didn’t want to be bothered, he didn’t want friends. He was a loner because he wanted to be one. Yes he wanted things to be different, but he wanted to get closer to those he deemed worthy. Again, that was less than a handful. He knew not a lot of people cared about him, he didn’t want them to, at least, he made it difficult for them to care. Even Lani, whom he considered his best friend, he was an ass to. How many times had Odion called out his bullshit? No, Odion felt what he said like saying, the meaner the better.

And the reaction he saw, was priceless. And the couple of words she spoke afterwards with tears in her eyes was just icing on the cake. Hadn’t he been called something similar just recently? In this very spot? He shook his head. Maybe time was playing funny tricks on him. The storm outside reminded him of the storm by the lake. It had to be connected to her powers, and her powers connected to her emotions. Odion always picked up on the little things.

But then she just decided to leave, and that was unacceptable. Odi paused time to catch up with her, leaving his precious cards for the moment. They were just old cards, so no one would know they meant a thing to him. And yes he had been trying to get rid of her, but he couldn’t stand others having the last word. Time resumed and he stood in front of her like magic.

“You know it’s rude to answer a question with a question, also, it’s very annoying.” He said, smirking a bit to himself with his head held high. And then his expression darkened upon seeing the tears that flowed down her face. This is why he didn’t cry in public. He took a couple steps back to let her pass. No, he didn’t need her friendship.

Mia has been abandoned by fate, she might not have done through the same things as he had. He might have had it worse than her; but everyone had their own breaking point. Each person could only take so much, it depended on the person on how much they could take. Her breaking point had been when she lost the three people she was most closest to, her life revolved around the three people she lost, in one car crash, in one night. Her life completely changed because of some idiot who decided to drive drunk on an icy rode. The point is everyone hurts, everyone was going through their own issues. It didn’t make anyone any lesser of a person; it didn’t matter to her that he had gone through more than her. She was still hurting, and he was still hurting. The only difference between them was that she was trying to get past the pain, get past the bad memories and look on the bright side. Where it seemed he was content on being bitter his whole life; hung up on the things he couldn’t change.

Like with Odion, the bad had out weighted the good for so long. She always wanted to escape the pain, the emotional turmoil, all of it. That is why she tried to commit suicide. But you come to a place like Hammel, away from the people who mentally tortured you, away from the ex boyfriend who told you that you were going to rot in hell one day. She started to feel peace at mind, that no one knew anything about her; she could start fresh. But it seemed every time something good happened to her life had to come in and tell her it’s not okay. She arrived at the school, started to see that there was more than life outside Barrow, Alaska. Started making friends, and then someone had to steal her notebook. It made her feel very vulnerable. Then Cameron asked her out and now this comes back to haunt her. She really wanted life to just give her a break.

Mia found it weird, and surprising, that one moment she had been free of the red head and now he was standing right in front of her. She jumped a little at seeing him; she almost walked into him. She wondered what the hell was his power. She glared at him for quoting her and lifted her middle finger towards him. She wasn’t in the mood to talk anymore. When he moved out of her way she walked passed him; wiping some of the tears away. She normally never cried in public, but it seems like she let her walls fall when she moved to Hammel. It was something she was going to have to work on again. She didn’t even want him as a friend; if this is how he treated people. Mocking them for their insecurities and putting them down just to get some sick satisfaction.
