Post by Joshua Bernstein on Jan 31, 2013 21:32:15 GMT -5
Age: 52/53 (he should be roughly the same age as Josh)
Suggested playby: Aaron Eckhart
Appearance musts: 6'2 and blonde, was lanky as a youth but doesn't have to be now obvs.
Job: he has a law degree, so anything you want him to do with that, do
Important personality points: Somewhat introverted and emotionally sensitive. Easily discusses his emotional needs. Also, he likes to be blindfolded which I think has been mentioned in Hammel canon before but I don't remember. ANYWAY IT IS RELEVANT I SWEAR. Also similar to Josh in idealism vs reality.
Important history points:
He decided to go away for college, and thus found himself in New York City. It was a more diverse place than he was used to, but he made a few friends for himself among the younger NYU Democrats, though he never quite felt comfortable with the radicals and their protests and thus had never attended any of their meetings, despite invitations from one of his classmates.
This classmate was another boy his age, Joshua Bernstein. Joshua was gregarious and energetic, two traits he'd always found attractive, but he also happened to be spoken for. Extremely spoken for. And he didn't really seem to notice that Simon noticed him. When Josh broke up with the medical student he'd been living with Simon seized his chance, inviting Josh to study with him when at all possible. And Josh took him up on those offers more often than not, because he was avoiding the Radicals after the disaster that was his break up.
It took Simon a few years to get up the nerve to ask Josh out, and his earnest request was met with a disappointing "Sure." But he was interested enough to accept that, and to hope that Josh would become more enthusiastic about their relationship as time went on.
This didn't happen. Instead, the normally outgoing, idealistic Josh withdrew, becoming more aloof the more Simon pushed for emotional intimacy. There were some good times, times with laughter and fun and joy in one another's company, but their Simon couldn't help but feel that they were really just two friends who sometimes had sex instead of boyfriends. Things eventually came to a head, and they had an argument that resulted in Simon being unable to ignore the fact that Josh really wasn't interested in him romantically. He was heart-broken, but with this revelation he couldn't stay, particularly not when it was obvious that his boyfriend was unwilling to work on their relationship and fix whatever issues they had.
Ultimately somehow he ends up with Saul.
*He and Josh were both 30 when they began dating, and broke up when they were both 31
Name: Saul Goldblatt
Age: 49/50 (he's three years younger than Simon and Josh)
Suggested playby: Dermot Mulroney
Appearance musts: 5'9", brown haired and brown eyed. Generally average. Wore glasses from a young age, but Simon likes him with contacts (aka I couldn't find a PB who consistently wore glasses)
Job: Same as Simon. He was a law clerk when he met Josh but can be doing anything now.
Important personality points: Hates chaos, strictly law-abiding in every respect, gentle, conflict-adverse, hates not having control, likes tying people up
Important history points: He'd been living in Manhattan for about seven years when he met Joshua Bernstein at the courthouse. Josh was presenting a case in front of the judge Saul worked for, and he was clearly passionate about his work. They awkwardly flirted during lunch breaks, and then ended up dating. Neither really understood the other, Saul constantly perplexed by Josh's more chaotic approach to life and Josh mystified by Saul's obsessive need for control. In some ways, these characteristics complimented one another; Saul liked that Josh needed him to keep him grounded, and Josh liked having that grounding...up to a point. But then he began to feel restricted, and Saul began to feel frustrated at what he perceived as an inability to be serious.
During a New Year's Eve party Saul met Sean, the "best friend" but was promptly ignored by Josh in favor of Sean.
Their relationship didn't survive that party.
Saul expressed unhappiness with being left alone with a group of people he didn't know while Josh hung around someone else with puppy dog eyes. And Josh did not help matters by brutally stating that Sean would always be more important to him than any lovers.
Realizing the truth in that revelation, Saul broke things off. They'd been dating 10 months, not even making it to a year.
Somehow ends up with Simon.
*He was 34 and Josh was 37 when they dated.
Other:
They can be in Pilot Ridge for any reason you choose. Perhaps they adopted a meta child who recently began to attend, perhaps they decided to open up a law firm together in the area, perhaps one of them has family in the area. Really Sean and Dry just thought it would be hilarious and awkward.
Also, Sean made me do it.
