Thread Roulette: "Volunteers"

Hayley is directing the painting of some sets for the winter concert. The Odion Martins, Haley Shapiro, Ulrich Schneider, and Fernando Reyes were assigned to help but aren't actually helping.

Why the fuck was he here painting? It didn’t make any sense. It must’ve been his lack of efforts during class, or some terrible luck of the draw. He was already participating in MANifesto, why did he have to help paint sets? If he was half as good at speeding through time as he was at going back in it, they could be done in half a second. However, this wasn’t going to happen, especially when he had so much on his mind. Lani, going first during the auction, and a slew of other things.

Odion was putting some fine details on one of the bush cut outs. He decided they would look rather nice with some red on them. No, Odi wasn’t painting berries on them, he was making it look like someone had been murdered in the bushes. If they were going to make him do this, they had better be prepared for some consequences. He kept his eyes on what he was supposed to paint and tried to ignore the others who were “helping”. He didn’t feel like talking, and was definitely in a foul mood.

Fer volunteered to help with the concert, in his logic, it meant meeting some senior rocker hotties backstage, so it was a great plan. Except of course he didn't actually considered that he had to... well... help around. Now he was stuck painting the set. Most boring job ever. He thought while he painted the banner he was assigned to. It had been one hour since he started painting the "Hammel", and he was still stuck in the H.

"Ok, next." He said to himself as he stood up, no longer wanting to work.

Instead he started walking around the auditorium looking for a better time to spend his time. He had been to focused on trying to meet the hotties that were going to play in the concert that he didn't actually notice that there were some cute guys to meet around in the volunteer work. It costed him a bit to decide where to start, but he definitely enjoyed the job a ginger was doing with some bushes in the other side of the auditorium.

"Looking good, Picasso." Fer said, approaching from behind. "You, I mean, because those berries look terrible."

Being stuck indoors doing something as boring as painting was torturous for Ulrich. He was an outdoorsy kind of guy who enjoyed fresh air, grass, and sunshine, not paint fumes. Nevertheless, it was something he had to do. He wasn't apart of any clubs or sports, but he was assigned to help paint sets for the winter concert as a punishment because he accidentally broke a window a few days ago when he was firing off marbles with his sling-shot. He ha to do detention as well, but school officials decided that giving him something productive to do with his free time was the best way to keep him out of trouble.

Ulrich was told to grab some more pain from the supply closet, so he walked there, grabbed a few cans, and walked back. When he arrived, he saw the two other male "volunteers" chatting. He didn't know either one of them, but he at least knew their first names just from seeing them around school. The dark-haired Brazilian's name was Fer and the ginger's name was Odion.

Ulrich approached them and placed the cans of paint down beside a painting of what he assumed was a bush... with some strange, bloody smears splattered across it. Aren't those supposed to be berries? he thought as he looked on questionably. "I don't think that's how it's supposed to look," he said with honesty. He wasn't trying to be critical of Odion's... art, he was sincerely confused by what was being painted. "Berries are round..."

Being in a good mood was a rare occasion for Haley but that she was, even when she found out she was tasked to help out a teacher for a concert. Painting was not her forte but it was art, and that she wasn't bad at.

When she saw that one of the other volunteers was Odion Martins however, an eyebrow shot up. Not even caring that there were two other guys there, Haley sneered at the ginger. "I think the garbage man forgot to pick you up." She said to Odion as she grabbed a few brushes and one of the paint palettes to start on her set.

Hayley's heels clicked on the stage as she walked around supervising the students. There was a winter concert coming up soon, and Hayley needed help with finishing up the sets. Luckily enough, she was handed the trouble makers and a few students had actually volunteered to help as well.

Approaching the red head, Hayley glanced down at the red splattered bushes and frowned, a long nail ran across her lips as she turned her attention to the boy, "What's your name darling?" She asked and waited for the boy's response. "Just wanted to let you know, that there won't be any murders or deaths in this show, so you won't need to add blood onto the set. If you could fix that please, that would be lovely!" Hayley smiled before patting the boy on the shoulder and continuing along.

Then Hayley noticed another boy wandering around, was he lost? Was there something he was supposed to be doing? She glanced around looking for what he might have been doing before and spotted the banner. H. That was it. She had assigned these jobs over an hour ago and all that was done was an H? Hayley took a deep breath before approaching the boy, "Y'know there are a few more letters in Hammel then an H right?" She said jokingly.

Now Hayley stood back and watched two other students approach the red headed boy. Why was everyone so interested in what this boy was doing? And not doing their assigned jobs? She thought to her and let out an exasperated sigh.

"Students!" Hayley said a bit too loudly to get everyone's attention, "I know this is boring, and I know many of you would rather be anywhere else but here, but please. If you can, while you are here, work. Have fun, but work too." She said happily and clapped her hands together. "And be nice!" Hayley threw a glance over at the tiny girl. She had heard what the little girl had said to the red-head and couldn't understand the hostility.

"This should be fun! You're being such an important part of the show, so be proud of your work."

Fernando’s plan was terrible. Who did he think would show up to this stupid volunteer thing? The musicians wouldn’t be here until after the show was over, not before.

The teacher came by and commented and Odion completely ignored her, but he did paint with a lot more, emphasis, shall we say.

“Pablo Picasso isn’t especially attractive,” Odion said simply, not even looking at whoever was talking to him. Why were people talking to him now? First Carter, now this guy. The redhead wasn’t interesting and he never would be. “They would look terrible if you thought they were berries,” he added, finally gracing the person speaking with a glare. Fernando wasn’t the brightest of persons.

And neither was Ulrich. “I don’t want to paint berries,” he said, passing the brush over to Ulrich. “Why don’t you give it a try.” It wasn’t as much of a question as it was a command.

And then a comment from the peanut gallery. Odion’s eyebrows shot up in unison. “What the hell did you just say to me?” He asked, completely bewildered that someone completely random would just say that to him without reason. He glared at her for longer than necessary.

Seemed like the best of the best were in attendance for this task, and they were all interested in him. Quite the opposite of remaining in the shadows.

Odion glared at the music teacher. This was fucking stupid and everyone knew it. If he didn’t want to remain unknown he would’ve said so, but it wasn’t in his best interest. And walking out would mean the teacher’s keeping a closer eye on him. He just hoped that painting unsatisfactory ‘berries’ would equate to getting to leave early.

"But you are!" Fer quickly inserted, as he did think the redhead was very attractive. "That's what matters."

He also did think that the ginger's follow up words were a bit apathetic, but Fer was ok with it, not everybody's easy. Plus, another very interestingly-looking boy walked to them and shared the same thought as Fer that the ginger was doing his share specially wrong. Ginger also replied cold and Fer started to wonder if this was just how he was and also wondered if the blonde was here to hit on the ginger as well. Oh yes, threesome. He nodded to himself just as a girl approached the trio followed by the teacher to scold all four of them, to which Fer only crossed his arms and rolled his eyes.

"Well, I was thinking," He said to the teacher. "that we could reduce it H. You know, like you, Mrs. W. instead of Mrs. Wheaton. The H. institute."

That should convince her, right?

The combination of being passed the paint brush and indirectly fussed at by the teacher convinced Ulrich to try his hand at painting. He took the brush in his left hand and switched it over to his right before dipping the tip on some green paint. The first order of business was to cover up the bloody mess Odion had made, and after the first few brush strokes, Ulrich got an idea.

He figured that if he used two brushes instead of just one, he could get twice the work done and be able to leave the auditorium twice as fast. So, with his right hand occupied, he grabbed a second brush with his left, dipped it in red paint and began painting basic, circular berries all while continuing to fix Odion's murder scene with his right hand at the same time. Being ambidextrous and superhumanly skillful with his hands made it quite easy for him to perform the multiple tasks with little effort.

"Does this look good?" he asked everyone shyly.

Ulrich then listened in as Fer explained why he only painted the H for Hammel, and what he heard actually made sense to him. "I think it's a good idea... it's less cluttered."

When he finally finished the bush Odion was supposed to do, he put the brushes down and looked around. It didn't take him too much longer to realize that he wasn't the only one who rather be doing something other than helping paint stuff in the auditorium. "Maybe I can sneak out..." he thought as he eyed the exits.

Mocking the teacher when she sweetly reprimanded her, Haley went back to painting her set. She snorted with the grace of a buffalo when Odion looked offended. She didn't give any explanation to the insult and let everything else unfold.

She had done her research after Lani's breakdown and it had led her to this ginger. It didn't require much, really. The hard part was actually tracking down his schedule. The boy was random and didn't have a fixed time to do anything.

But this fortuitous meeting couldn't have been planned any better.

She just wished that stupid looking boy wasn't distracting Odion so she could just continue her tirade. She felt weirdly protective over Lani and even though the older teen was insistent on Odion's innocence, she didn't want to believe him. Odion was obviously the reason why Lani had even shown that side of him to her. So now the redhead was going to have to deal with her.

She was almost done with her set and she needed more paint so she grabbed her almost empty palette and walked over to where the paint was. On her way over, she 'accidentally' tripped over her shoelaces and dumped what little content there was on her palette on to Odion's back. "Oh no. I'm so...sorry." She simpered. "Let me help you!" Of course, by help, she meant smearing the rest of the paint all over his shirt.

“It’s also beside the point,” Odion said, obviously not interested in someone who insisted on acting like he was. But he did smile slightly at the abbreviated version of Hammel.

Odi sat back with relaxed satisfaction as someone else did the work. Not doing anything might also result in getting to get out early.

He thought he was done with the nuisance, but for some reason this girl had her guns pointed at him. Everything inside of him clenched up as she insulted him and his hand wrapped around his paint can’s handle before he could stop himself. And no one else would be able to stop him either as he stepped through time and right up to the little twat, all but dumping the entire contents of his paint over her head. He didn’t know what her problem was, but at least now she’d have a reason to hate him.
