We have only ever done these for drills and a way of getting unlikely characters locked in a room together. A real lockdown would occur if there was a real danger to the students (outside of normal power-related accidents) and particularly if someone unauthorized was on campus. While the school is in lockdown, the security team is sent to deal with the danger.
