It was all set perfectly. They had gone over the plan a million times and the variations of the plan a few million more. Lani had planned for everything that was going to go wrong. It was going to be simple and easy. A safe closely guarded and coveted. However, there was an alternate plan. Elle, Lani’s informant on the inside assured him that everything was running smoothly. She stated that a run with the police was keeping his boss busy and she assured him that everything was running smoothly and that tonight was the night to strike. Lani wasn’t sure how much he trusted her, but he hadn’t told Odion’s about his doubts. She knew nothing of the initial plans. He just wanted this to be over. And tonight it would be. One way or another. They would break his boss’s hold and leave the skeleton either in Elle’s hands or to be picked over by the vultures of other mobs. Either way, Lani’s hand were washed of it tonight, in water or blood.
Not being at Hammel made Lani’s life a million times easier. He didn’t have to sneak out for one. The feel of the pavement under his soles was cold and rough despite the heat and humidity. Perhaps a product of his own mind? The power coiled and flexed in his mind and he felt the anger and determination like a cold blade in his soul driving him in a singular task. He moved through the shadows of the melting daylight like a wraith on a deadly mission. His mind, however swirled around this goal going over the plan a thousand times more and playing it out in his head. He paced slowly, deliberately the duffel swinging rhythmically against his hip. They hadn’t even left Vermont yet and Lani’s heart was hammering with fear and excitement. Toes balancing on the edge of a precipice moved smoothly up the steps and his knuckles rapped against Odion’s door before Lani had a moment to comprehend that he was here already.
Lani turned his eyes from the door to sweep the surrounding area. He couldn’t escape the feeling of eyes over the past few weeks. He wasn’t sure if they were trustworthy eyes or not and the feeling was unsettling to say the least. Lani bit his tongue to remind himself this was real. How many nightmares had haunted his sleep these past few days? He’d lost count far back. His power pulled toward the familiar time turner inside and the steady feeling of time was like a warm hand on his heart. He wasn’t doing this alone. Not alone. His head turned on a swivel as the door opened and despite his heart soaring at the sight of his boyfriend Lani couldn’t find a way past the anxiety to give Odion even a reassuring smile. “Last chance, you don’t have to do this,” Lani said, more so for his own benefit. If this wasn’t Odion’s choice he wouldn’t force it upon him. He knew it was hopeless and part of his heart feared than while another took comfort in it.
