While Ferris's hours weren't as long as they were normally, Ramadan had started on the 8th and he was coming in at 4 a.m. on the dot every day to cook for it. There were only a handful of kids observing, but Ferris was very concerned with making them a meal that would get them through the month-long fast without any medical problems. He'd gotten a few recipes from one of the kids but otherwise served slightly more protein and carb-rich breakfast foods (and nixed the pork). He wasn't on the skeleton staff that was scheduled to serve iftar, or the post-fasting meal, but he did a lot of the prep for it so that all that had to be done was to put the required things in the ovens or on the stove to heat.
His day was over a little after lunch service but before most of the kids had finished eating, or around 12:30, but he usually ate lunch himself in the staff lounge before he left. It was quiet, and usually smelled like coffee, which he didn't drink but still liked the scent of. Today he had two roast chicken sandwiches with lingonberry sauce, radishes and baby carrots liberally sprinkled with vinegar, and little squares of what looked like compressed dirt. They were his second attempt at homemade wheat crackers. His first batch had both looked and tasted horrible, but the batch in front of him looked unappetizing but weren't too bad in the mouth. A little bit more like croutons than crackers and not anything he'd pass around, but edible to him personally.
He hadn't left anything on the lounge tables since school had let out, but he still packed more than the usual amount of dessert for himself in case anyone wandered in. Today it was double chocolate cookies, oversized milk chocolate chips in a chocolate dough, and they were an unmitigated success.
Sprawled at one of the tables, Ferris chewed thoughtfully as he tried to decide if he dared put off his daily nap to buy another two bushels of peas at the market to put up. The cookies were spread temptingly on a napkin for whoever was lucky enough to come in and ask for one.
