AU: Date Night (Vampire AU, River)

Holding her lover's hand, Carleigh walked down the sidewalk, side by side with River. It was a beautiful evening, dark, but still warm. The vampire had faint memories of the California sun, and the way it felt on her skin. Now, if she were to step outside in broad daylight, she'd burn. Carleigh looked up to the sky, shaking off the slightly morbid thought and then turned to River, a smile on her face.

It was their weekly date night. Unlike most couples, they didn't go to a fancy restaurant or to the movies. No, their date nights consisted of roaming the streets at midnight (or whenever the sun set, depends on the season) and looking for someone who stayed out too late. They had finer tastes than most vampires, targeting those who had high sugar content versus the usual selection of prostitutes, the homeless and drug addicts. Her crimson eyes scanned the city block, a delicate smirk on her face.

There wasn't a lot to see. People tended to avoid staying out late, which was annoying. Made it more difficult to find someone who met their high standards. It was worth it though, as there was nothing better than the blood of someone who ingested a high amount of sugar. It was unmistakably sweet. The thought alone made Carleigh's mouth water, becoming even more thirsty. 

She looked up at River, the smirk softening into a smile. "I love you." she said, tilting her head up to kiss her love on the cheek. "See anything you like?"

River used to enjoy the daytime more than night. He loved the sun, loved basking around and feeling sweat drip from his brow after a long run in the heat. He'd always been resistant to the cold too, of course, having grown up in the chilly temperatures of Canada.

Now, of course, he lived for the night. The crisp darkness lit by the pale light of the moon, making everything more magical and fun. At least, that was how River saw it. And, of course, everything was a thousand times better with his love by his side. Carleigh's hand fit perfectly into his own, the touch of her cool, comforting grip sending waves of affection and calmness through the elder vampire's body. If anyone saw him now, they might even be able to ignore the red in his eyes, because he otherwise looked nothing more than a teenager in love.

He paused as Carleigh looked up at him, and River met her gaze with his own, a soft smile touching his lips. He took her free hand with his own, leaning down to nuzzle his face into the crook of the blonde's neck. "I love you too, more than anything," he murmured, kissing her softly for a long moment before pulling away. It was these moments River felt at peace, almost... Human.

At the question, he looked up and peered around, wondering if tonight's dinner was anywhere near. "Mmm... Nothing's caught my attention yet," he replied, sniffing the air tentatively. The blood he could sense was all bitter and sour. No good. "How about we go to the park?" he suggested with a smile, starting to begin to walk again.

Carleigh had her fingers interlocked with River's, still smiling up at her lover, the moon illuminating their matching pale skin. Being around him just made everything feel... so right. She was sure that her general calm aura was sending the good vibes that the blonde was feeling now from River, but regardless, made her happy.

Mirroring his smile, Carleigh out a girlish giggle. These were the nights that made being undead worth it. Not that she ever really questioned her immortality. She had River by her side, and that was all that mattered. "I love you more." Carleigh insisted with a grin, sighing contently as he kissed her. She could forget all about their troubling kids and enjoy an evening to themselves. Alone and at peace.

"Agreed. Everyone here smells so.. sour and gross." Carleigh made a disgusted face, shuddering as the uneasy vibes from the people around her caught her attention. They all seemed to be panicked, or lost and confused. "The park sounds like a much better idea." She smiled back at River, letting him lead the way to their new destination.

River was glad they were spending some time alone, forgetting the drama that had been started recently by their troublesome children. He didn't regret them, not at all, but they sure could cause a headache sometimes. Especially Kodi... River didn't know what to do about him, imprinting on a human. But he wasn't going to think about it; he was just going to focus on enjoying the company of his lovely mate. "I doubt that," he replied with a cheeky smile that somehow made his crimson eyes seem softer. He couldn't imagine life - or undead life, rather - without her.

"Mmm... Yeah. I think we're still too close to the bars and taverns," he determined, glancing down a side street. Drunkards were easy, but too gross for River to handle unless he was starving. He was very picky, and, fortunately, was a good enough hunter to get along fine that way. River gave Carleigh's hand a squeeze, smiling happily at her agreement. "Alright," he replied, heading towards the greener section of town. He threw up a quick disguise that made his gaze the brown color it had been before he'd been turned, in case anyone looked at him too closely as they passed by. "Mmm... It looks like a full moon tonight," he mentioned, glancing up at the sky. "I wonder how many lycans are around..." He didn't know a lot about the shapeshifters, but he didn't particularly want to run into one.

Fortunately, they reached the park soon enough, upon which River took in a deep whiff and let out a more content sigh. "That's better," he breathed, looping his arm around Carleigh's waist. "Now, to find the perfect meal..." A faint sweet scent caught his attention by a copse of trees, and, still holding his lady, River meandered that way, looking nonchalant as he popped a lollipop in his mouth. "I think this'll be a good one," he said softly.

Carleigh too was incredibly grateful for the night ahead alone with her lover. Although their kids were a shining beacon in the pale blonde's life, sometimes, their lives became so much to handle. Especially with her frequent migraines when her children got too emotional or close to danger. Right now, it was a faint ache that wasn't noticeable unless she concentrated solely on it. And with River by her side, Carleigh wouldn't be doing that anytime soon.

"Agreed." Carleigh followed her lover, away from the not so nice part of town. Once his hand wound up in hers, the blonde interlocked her fingers with his, a sweet smile appearing on her face. Although she preferred the sweeter tasting blood, Carleigh wasn't as picky as her lover. If times were tough, then she would drink anything. Rather, anyone. Swinging their entwined hands back and forth, Carleigh mirrored River's actions by turning her eyes into a purple/blue, as the red never entirely went away with her bright blue eyes. She too looked up into the sky, shivering. "Hopefully not a lot. I don't sense any on my radar." Carleigh commented. Lycans were... troublesome, she found.

The immortal blonde leaned into River's side, surrounded by the greenery expected in a park. A soft breeze rustled through the trees, a breeze reaching Carleigh's nose. Brought with it was a faint scent, of something that reminded her of warm, vanilla sugar. It was enticing the blonde. She walked alongside her lover, nodding in response. Her mouth was watering in response to the smell. "I couldn't agree more."

River glanced over at Carleigh as her own eye color changed, giving a fond smile at the sight. It had been so long ago when they had been a beautiful, crystal-clear blue, back before they'd become what they were now and had just been simple teenagers in a budding romance, with no idea that they would become eternally bound like they had. She was still beautiful, of course - nothing would ever change that. River loved the deep crimson that her eyes were now just as much as they had been before. "You're so gorgeous," he sighed, heart aching with affection. He smiled and nodded at her comment, glancing around warily just in case. "I know there's one named Brooke that lives around these parts," he commented a little dryly. He did his best not to run into her; as long as the couple kept to themselves, he thought, the less they had to worry about from other supernaturals.

But now, the hunter in River was on alert. His fangs had elongated as soon as he'd caught a whiff of the potential meal, eyes alight with the anticipation of the chase. "Would you like to take them down, or me?" he asked as they approached the line of trees. River peered around the trunk of a tree and caught sight of what was giving off the aroma - a young boy, heavyset, someone who probably was fed too much high-sugar and salt containing foods and didn't exercise as much as he should. Easy and delicious pickings for the two experienced vampires. There was a line of houses nearby where River assumed the boy must live. They'd have to drag the kid away and make sure he didn't scream.

"Maybe one of us should distract him and the other sneak up and take him from behind," he suggested, glancing at Carleigh. "I don't want to risk him screaming and his parents hearing."

It took a lot of focus, but Carleigh's eyes were finally a suitable hue that wouldn't be too noticeably different from a normal human's eye colour. At the same time as her lover, she looked at his face and smiled at the old, familiar brown hue of his eyes. Back before the life of the undead. Her free hand went up to cup River's cheek, her smile widening at his lovely comment. "You're too sweet, love." She replied, taking her hand off his cheek as River talked about one named Brooke. Carleigh didn't go out very much, except for with her lover or the children, and didn't particularly like causing trouble or being involved with it. It was usually Kodi that brought the trouble, and migraines.

She brushed off the thought as her own senses detected the sweet, sweet smell. Carleigh followed behind River, her fangs out as they drew closer and closer to the source of the aroma. "Hmmm." The blonde vampire mused, debating the choices. "Maybe... I go in for the distraction. I agree, we don't want to cause a scene and lose our meal." She said, her smile turning into a slight frown for a moment. That would be a great shame. "So, I'll go in and you can take him down. But promise me you'll save some." Carleigh thought back to a hunt awhile ago, where River had been too into the hunt and left little to nothing for her to feast upon. She didn't resent her love or anything for it; it was just fun to tease and poke fun at him.

Her eyes closed in on the chubby boy, a wild grin back on her face. Carleigh began to approach the boy, careful not to make any sudden movements or sounds.

River smiled as Carleigh cupped his cheek, swooping in and giving her a quick peck on the lips. "Only telling the truth, darling," he cooed. He could spend hours telling his mate everything he loved about her; his affection hadn't faded the slightest in time. One of the nice things about being a vampire - their hearts weren't as nearly easy to be changed as humans.

He nodded along to the plan she was proposing, his pale face lighting up as he anticipated the taste of sugary blood on his tongue. Mmm.... The lollipop dissolved in his mouth as he salivated, and he tossed the stick away (in a trash bin, of course, because he wasn't a littering vampire). "That sounds good to me," he murmured, keeping his eyes on their prey. "Make sure to cover his mouth so he doesn't scream." Because that would ruin everything. His eyes went wide with 'innocence' as she accused him of not leaving her anything. "I would never!" he protested, but a faint smile tugged at his lips. "I promise I won't eat it all," River swore. "No matter how sweet he is."

When Carleigh began to go in, River meandered around the side, keeping to the shadows so the boy wouldn't see him. He snuck up behind when the morsel was distracted with his stunning lover, and, when the opportunity was ripe, pounced. If all went to plan, the boy's mouth would be covered so his screams would go unheard from whoever might be nearby. The delicious fluid poured into River's throat, and he drank greedily, like a child who had just been given a liter of their favorite soda.
