What she said had made perfect sense, and her question was what Luke had dreaded; he couldn't prove to her he could be trusted right now, he couldn't show her. He could only tell her and without her trusting him in the first place there'd be no reason to take his word for it. But even if he was to show her he could be trusted he wasn't sure how aside from hanging out, which she didn't want until he proved to her he could be trusted. She wasn't toying with him, she wasn't breaking him, she was just letting him down easy. He didn't blame her, his issues were too much to accept, he couldn't be friends with anyone, let alone more and he knew that from the start it wa just a ticking timebomb. This didn't mean he was going to give up on her, far from it. He'd fight his way back into her life, on good terms, even if it took years to do. He knew that though he wouldn't have realized right away that, even if it hurt, he'd try.
When she finally got up and was looking away from him Luke felt his stomach make a sudden plunge as his eyes instantly gave in to what he was feeling but refusing to let out. He kept his seated place on the bench as his hand slid forward hesitantly, shaking all over the place. Don't leave me, don't make me go through what I have been stupid enough to put you through, his eyes screamed as his mouth failed to produce a single sound. This couldn't be it, he refused to let it be. But.. why did he feel so empty inside when the girl he undeniably loved stood mere inches away from him?
Why did he ever betray her? Did he not see what he had? Was he so blinded by his own madness that he missed what he wanted, what he needed? He had always known, and prepared for him to fuck up everything that happened to him, but this was something he couldn't prepare for, didn't want to prepare for. He didn't want her to go, he didn't! He wanted to be with her, do anything a couple should do together. He didn't want to be Lucas, he wanted to be Lucas and Karalie.
Thoughts about it all shot through his mind as she stood before him, her back still turned to him. A tear slid down his face as his hand hesitantly slid forward on the bench some more as he tried to figure out ways to show her he could be trusted, though she had said that it didn't have to be right now. But to Luke, it did have to be right now. This all felt too definitive and he couldn't handle it.
If only he could tell her which memories to see, his hand had been sliding forward with the intention of grabbing her hand and letting her see all the good things they had gone through. But he figured that being touched right now was the last thing she wanted.
''How..-'' He started in a creaky voice but suddenly stopped short of breaking his own mind. Right now, the mere utterance of any word would release all the pent up negativity he had been storing.
Instead, without uttering anything he let the tears flow down his face silently, letting emotion slip out of him as he sat on the bench.
