Alex spent most of his life on campus. Between school, video games, and being lazy, Alex never really had the time to go downtown. However, when the urge to consume half a gallon of coffee overcomes you, you must heed its call. For this reason Alex packed up his laptop, and the fantasy novel he was reading and went to The Velvet-Tone Coffeehouse at nine-fifteen p.m. to get caffeinated out of his mind.
Alex went to the counter and ordered two coffees. The cashier asked if he was expecting someone. Alex allowed himself a small grin as he said “no”. He pored a heavy amount of cream into the cups to cool them down to a bearable temperature. Then he chugged them both paying no attention to the flavor. All he cared about was getting the caffeine in his bloodstream. Fifteen minutes after ordering the first two coffees Alex was back at the counter ordering a third. The cashier gave him a weird look, but Alex dropped a five dollar bill in the tip jar and that kept her from asking questions. He took his time with the third cup of coffee. He closed his eyes as he experienced every part of the coffee experience. He breathed deeply allowing the rich aroma to fill his nose. He sipped the coffee trying to become aware of every flavor he was tasting: the bitter, the rich, the acidic. He felt his heartbeat quicken. He felt his body heat up as the warm blood flowed swiftly through his veins. He felt every fiber of his being desire to move. He felt his toes twitch, his heel bounce on the floor, his fingers drum the booth table. And finally, as Alex finished his third cup of coffee, the need to go to the bathroom.
Back from the bathroom, Alex ordered his fourth large cup of coffee. He felt like he was glowing with energy. His brain was on overdrive. He whipped out his laptop, hopped on the wifi, and started a game of blitz chess. But his opponent was too slow, so he opened up a new tab, and started a second game. But even two games were not exciting enough for his overactive mind so he added a third game. As he toggled between the three games he felt like a juggler keeping three balls in the air. Then he thought, why not a fourth ball? So he added another game.
So there Alex was. His body shaking from caffeine. Staring intently at his screen while clicking his mouse furiously.
