Why was it that life seemed perpetually complicated? Just once, Lani wanted the world to be easy, but no, apparently that was too much to ask. Somewhere in this past year he'd been working on freezing his heart, then thawing it again. Sometime this past year he'd learned what it meant to forgive and to forgive himself. He no longer hated the person in the mirror and the pain in his heart had started to heal. There were several times in this past year that Lani felt the sting of betrayal and his wrath had showed like a dragon. Once or twice in this past year, Lani had let his power go completely and it hadn't swallowed his entire being along with it. This past year Lani had learned how to let the past be the past. This past year he also learned to never forget, but he also learned that forgetting wasn't the same thing as forgiving and forgiving didn't mean he had to forget.
This past year, he'd seen his world tossed upside down twice. Spent a few hours behind bars and made sure that another far worse man stayed behind them for a few decades. Lani had broken everything he'd believed when he'd partnered with the police against his old Boss. He'd discovered that there are those who genuinely do want to help. This past year, Lani Hunter had begun to change. For the better and for the worse. Lani had been through to rock bottom once again and been pulled out by wonderful friends and family. Lani's trust had been broken and though everything he thought he stood for screamed at him not to break, Lani had yielded his heart to give Odion another chance. Lani looked at himself in the mirror. He found himself more familiar with the person staring back at him.
The person in the mirror was a world class thief who just this past year had seen riches pass through his hands and countless burglaries. Lani the thief was proud, he was well sought after in the underground. His skill and efficiency had been yet to be surpassed, and it was unlikely, since his telekinesis put him leaps and bounds ahead of his competition. The person in the mirror was a student and a friend, who this past year had successfully passed his third semester of community college and connected with friends of a lifetime. This person had also seen heartbreak and the return of his dearest love. Over the past year Lani had forgiven and yet he was still holding back. For this past year, Lani had not overcome fear. Lani pulled on his running shoes, light and agile shoes with toes that provided mostly a cushion between his feet and pavement.
This past year had given Lani a great deal to think about and to process. Lani turned on his ipod and trotted down the stairs. Lani did his best thinking when he was occupying his body. He started off at a gentle trot before he made a turn and wove through the alleyways until he found himself at the lake. Yet again, Lani had failed to overcome his fear of water this past year, but that didn't stop him from enjoying the paths around the lake. There was a light layer of snow on the ground and the Lake was frozen over. He wore running sweat pants and a hoodie, chasing off the chill by running faster. He turned down a path in the leafless trees, music playing in his ears as he considered his life based on this past year.
