“Stop fidgeting.”
Devon turned to his mother as she lightly scolded him, but he couldn’t help it. To say he was a bit anxious was kind of like saying the sea was a bit wet. In all his life he had only ever taken a girl to meet his family once, and that had been over a decade ago in that absolute failure of an attempt at a relationship he’d had. Since then there had been no-one, and he had come to terms with the fact that there never would be anyone. And then Midori had come along.
“Seriously, stop it. You look like you’re waiting for the executioner or something.” Cade was several inches taller than his brother and not half so scrawny, but it was impossible to look at them and miss the fact that they were siblings. They had the same dark hair and light eyes, and both of them still looked fairly tired from having not fully recovered from several days of partying and travelling.
Devon scowled at his brother, before looking back to his mum. Lorraine had light eyes, like her boys, but age had turned her hair a pale silvery grey. She was dressed neatly, in a simple but elegant navy dress that reached her ankles. Around her shoulders there was a finely woven shawl of a pale blue shimmery thread, held in place with a silver dragonfly clasp. She kept a relaxed smile on her lips, but Devon could swear he could see an uncertainty in her eyes. That was only serving to feed his own doubts.
They had got to the restaurant a little early, thanks in part to Uno’s insistent yowling that Devon was sat in his favourite sleeping spot. They hadn’t been shown to the table for long when Devon saw Midori out of the corner of his eye, with Tory right beside her. He hadn’t seen her since before he’d left for England, and the sense of combined relief and the dread that he felt about the situation made his stomach do a somersault as he stood. He approached them slowly, the anxiety likely clear as day on his face as he spoke. “We don’t have to do this now, y’know. We could just run away, or something. I hear Spain’s nice this time of year.”
