Thread Roulette: Theater Appreciation

For Pride month, the Globe Theater is doing a series of plays featuring LGBT playwrights. Cici Rivers, Rory Lennox, and Casper van de Berg have all been assigned to help with sets.

Cici headed downtown towards the theater, a light spring in her step. Today, she was helping with the sets of some plays involving LGBT. It sounded like fun, she thought. Smiling as she arrived, she explained what she was here to do to the person who was near the door with a clipboard, and he ticked her name off and waved her through with a lazy smile. She entered and looked around. It was a mess! She couldn't wait to see how it would all come together! 

Glancing around, she noticed that she was the only student so far. She knew she was meant to be helping with a couple of other students, but she was a bit early. Or perhaps she simply hadn't caught site of them yet. Walking over to what looked like a woman in charge, the lady pointed Cici over to some large wooden sheets and explained they needed to be painted, pointing at the picture she was meant to try and replicate. Then, the lady ran off, no doubt 101 other things she needed to take care of and supervise. Happy that she got to do something arty, she examined the picture she was meant to be copying before deciding to wait a moment longer for the other Hammel students. She didn't really know anyone else here, and as she looked like the only one assigned to painting so far, Cici thought it likely the other students would be too. Besides, company always made things more fun she thought with an absent minded smile. 

[Rory Lennox]

Rory had arrived at The Globe Theatre right on time, excited that she had been assigned to something so interesting. She’d never helped design a set before. The dancer had really never even done community service before this semester, but she liked it. Even though she missed dancing every single day, it was nice to do some other activities every now and then.

She met her supervisor once she’d been let into the building, who’d instructed her to set her bags aside and asked her if she could work the power saw. Apparently, the look on Rory’s face was comical because the woman just laughed and instructed her to start tracing some of the drawings onto the pieces of wood. Someone else would have to cut them out because clearly the tiny telepath was not qualified to do so.

The woman guided her over to the set area, and pointed out the large stencils she could use to transfer the designs over. Rory was glad that she was given stencils because her freehand capabilities really left something to be desired.

There was another girl there as well, already fast at work painting. She must have also gone to Hammel, but she looked older so Rory wasn’t surprised that she didn’t recognize her. “Hi.” Rory said, sitting down and pulling out one of the stencils. “I’m Rory.”

Casper was still new to Hammel, new to Pilot Ridge, new to the United States for that matter. He didn't know his way around. So when he got assigned to work at the Globe Theatre he didn't know where he was headed at all. It was no surprised he showed up last. He had to ask for directions before he left, got himself turned around, and had to ask a total stranger where the building was again. A little nerve racking for the teen, but he survived and made it to his destination.

He went over to a woman who seemed to be supervising the whole set building process to ask how he could help. He too was asked if he could work a power saw. After seeing the big mechanical blade he quickly said no. That's just what he needed, a mishap with a power tool. Yeah, no. That's not how he wanted to die, thanks.

Going over to help paint, Casper saw two girls already working away. He waved to them and gave a small "hello." Grabbing a brush he peered over the older girl's shoulder to see what they were painting. Scenery. Yeah that made sense. They were making the set itself. He dipped his brush in the paint and sighed... He was wearing a white shirt. Great.

Deciding not to wait any longer, Cici shrugged and grabbed a large brush, dipping it in paint and began to lather it over the cardboard. It was only a base colour, so she didn't bother to be careful or draw any detailed designs. Some of the cardboards had already been painted with base coats, yet whoever had started had apparently decided the job wasn't for them and left it.

Luckily for the girl, Cici's clothes weren't fancy, so hopefully any paint she might get on them should wash out. Curling her hair behind her ear, which just fell forward again, she finally gave up, and pulled her hair into a messy bun, using a hair tie around her wrist. Of course, a few shorter strands still fell around her face, but it was better than when her hair had been down.

Resuming her painting, she looked up when she heard a feminine voice. "Heya Rory, m'name's Cici! Nice ta meetcha! D'you go t' Hammel too?" She went to hold her hand out for the other girl, then realized it was covered in paint and  paused, laughing sheepishly. The girl seemed a couple of years younger than her. She looked nice though, certainly pretty, and Cici was glad that some company had arrived so that she wouldn't have to paint alone. 

Turning as another student arrived, Cici smiled as she recognized the boy. "Cas, hi!" She said cheerfully, waving. She knew he was new to the school, only because they were in the same dorm. Happy to finally have a dorm buddy, Cici had chatted to him a lot and tried to make him feel welcome to Hammel. He was a little quiet, but the naturally happy, talkative girl didn't mind a bit. "So you're doin' this too? Mean!" She said with a light grin.

Rory wasn’t really dressed for painting, so she was a relieved that the other girl, who’d quickly introduced herself as Cici, had taken the reigns on that. Rory was very content tracing the stencils, since her artistic abilities didn’t really extend much further than having nice handwriting.

She nodded in response to Cici’s question. “I just transferred here this past semester. After Christmas.” The telepath had met a lot of people in the last few months, but most of them were in her own grade. This girl seemed to be a bit older, so it wasn’t really too surprising that the two of them hadn’t met yet.

She glanced down at Cici’s paint-covered hand as she extended it. Thankfully, she noticed before it got awkward because Rory was definitely not shaking it when it was covered with paint. The dancer laughed a little bit as well, before starting to trace her design again. Would they get in trouble if they were chatting too much and working too little? Probably.

Their final partner arrived, looking slightly exasperated...or maybe nervous. Definitely nervous, Rory concluded after catching a wave of jumbled thoughts. “Hi.” Rory said, with a smile. Cici seemed to already know the boy, which meant Rory was the odd one out. Not a problem though; she could talk to just about anyone. “My name’s Rory.”
