“Cali, Cali, Cali,” Zac said in a seemingly calm but obviously mocking tone, “There you are again. Assuming. I don’t think I have to lecture you about that again, do I?” He shook his head, having a serious sense of déjà vu over their conversation right now. “That one is open to interpretation dearie. While it could mean I’d want to meet your husband, it could also mean I’d want to avoid him. Hence asking if he’ll be around. Think dearie, think.” Though the more he thinks about it, meeting this Lee Chung would really be a mighty dandy idea, if only to see if he really is true.
And then Cali started using such absurd arguments again. It’s really like high school all over again. And he thought fourteen years would change the way Cali thinks. Apparently not. “There you are, assuming once again. And in front of Junior nonetheless. Is that what you’re teaching him? Poor child.” He gave Lee Chung Junior a knowing wink, took another bite off his cinnamon roll then continued. “Not only is your whole transformation cliché, your whole argument is cliché too. Are you really that boring Cali? And I am not ‘aggravating’ you Cali, not one bit. I am simply pointing out a few mistakes that I see you making. What’s so wrong about that?” In his defense, he’s actually trying not to, but he just can’t let Cali go thinking about him like that. He’s just defending himself, that’s all.
“You know Junior’s, in your words, ‘mischievous’ and ‘deceiving’, and yet you do nothing about it? Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” It might’ve failed for Zac, but he can attest to the fact that his parents did not support such kind of behavior. They never talk about his ‘egotism’ and ‘vanity’ the same way Cali talks about hers. Not one bit. “And seriously, stop with the whole sagely act. The ‘destroying others, you destroy yourself’ is so 2010. Or even older. It’s not appealing nor is it amusing.”
He shook his head, his eyebrows meeting and fingers seemingly pinching his nose bridge in disappointment. “Look Cali, I didn’t go here to argue. I came here to reconnect and all that. But if you’ll just explode, I’d be more than happy to leave. Really.” No, he can’t argue with Cali. Not with Junior and Georgia watching.
