Occupation Investigation - Sett tags Kali/Any

[Sett Richmond]

After the weekend of pure partying and enjoying having his baby brother around the family's [indefinitely] temporary home, Sett was actually ready to start working. More to keep busy than to earn money. He had plenty of that. His parents were still very generous with their children's allowance. Work was also an excuse for Sett to mix and mingle with the local crowd.

This would mean he had to find bars, where they were more likely to bring in the wilder girls. It was no surprise that that was why Sett liked bar tending but at the same time, it was also apparent that Sett was good at it. He had an easy charm to him without completely depending on his looks either. He wasn't going to lie. He led a very charmed life.

So off he went scouring from bar to bar but they were either complete dives or they were fully staffed so off he went to the town bulletin board. He knew the town by memory and found it easily, looking up places or people who needed jobs. One flier in particular jumped at him. "Kali's Kafe" it boasted in colourful letters. They always say never judge a book by its cover but by the aesthetics alone, he was already loving it. It wasn't a bar but it probably had female pull since it was a cafe.

He pulled a tab and called it immediately. Lo and behold, a ringtone rang shrilly near him. Sett whirled around and found a bright haired girl picking up her phone and saying hello.

"Hi there, sexy." Sett purred into the phone with a cheeky grin.

Her barista she had on staff had put in her two weeks notice two days ago. Kali was sad to have her leave, because she not only liked the girl, but she knew Kali pre-Kafe, and was a splendid barista and her friend. But the girl was putting herself through college and had enough to study abroad, and was going to be starting her semester in England. Kali was happy for her, and all of that, because she knew how much she wanted it, but it meant she needed another barista, or bartender to help her. She certainly wasn't ready to go back to doing it by herself. She got too much business for that.

So she'd put out ads. She needed an experienced someone that was ready to start work, and she needed someone that would understand how she worked and didn't try to take over--because Kali certainly didn't have the time for that. She'd put one in the paper, and even made a flier with her cell number on it and put it up on a few telephone poles, and the bulletin board. She'd gotten a few calls already, but no one had been experienced, even though she had made sure to put that on the flier (in bold, and with glitter on it).

She was walking through town at the moment because it was actually a nice day, and it was the one day she actually had off. It was actually a warm spring day so she'd chosen some capri pants to wear and some shoes she'd just got the other day and hadn't worn yet. She was about to cross the street when her phone went off. She dug it out of her pocket, because Kali did not carry a purse, and answered it.

"Hello," she greeted with a perky attitude. She hadn't recognized the number, so she figured it was someone calling about her ad, or maybe a wrong number.

"Hi there, sexy," her phone replied. She looked confused for a moment and looked around, because she could have sworn she heard the voice around her and then on the phone.

"Well hey," Kali replied, a little uneasy. She turned and saw a guy on his phone looking at her, to whom she smiled at because he wasn't too bad to look at, and then turned away to focus more on the person she was on the phone with.

The confused startled deer look on her face had Sett grinning, restraining a giggle. Probably not a good start to a possible professional relationship but who would he be if he didn't have a bit of fun? He was sure a girl with hair like that wouldn't take offense to a funny guy.

When she turned to him with a smile, he gave her an appreciative nod. Not a bad looker herself. And that hair. He loved her hair. Anubis would have a field day if he saw her. "Love your joy stick, sugar." Sett had better lines but that was gold already. How could he not use it?

First she gets called sexy, and then sugar. It only reminded Kali of how long it's been since she had a date. She realized, finally, that it was he who called her so she canceled the call and slid it back into her pocket. She grinned a little as she turned to face him. "Can I help ya, hun?" She could appreciate being hit on, but if he called her phone, then that meant he wanted to talk about the job position--or he was a stalker or something like that--so that meant this conversation would be about business.

So she'd make it about business and not think about how long it's been since she'd had a date. She could do it. Really.

She finally hung up and approached him when she realised he was the one who was calling. She didn't look pissed so he could work with that. Keeping his grin intact, he met her halfway down and looked at the piece of paper in his hand to find a name. "Kali then? I'm Sett. Sorry for the unconventional meet." He extended his hand to shake.

"You're a little young to be ownin' a cafe. I don't mean to disrespect. Think it's pretty amazin' actually." He widened his grin into a charming easy smile. "So if this really is the first time 'm meetin' my boss, 'm sorry for the--" he held his phone up to explain what he was indicating.

"Nice to meet you, Sett," she responded with a grin. "Oh it's no problem. Kinda funny actually." It was. Considering she had been standing right there when he had called her about the job. That could be considered fate, if one was to believe in it. Kali didn't necessarily believe in all that, thanks to her brother Sam and his power. Fate was just happy coincidences.

"Well, I figured it was better to start where I was happy instead of spending twenty years to find it." Kali grinned. It was really all thanks to the starting sum her father had been willing to donate for her to start her business so soon out of college. He had said she could just pay him back when she was ready, but something told her that if she ever did try to pay him back, he wouldn't take it. That wouldn't stop her from trying, though. She grinned and waved her hand as he apologized for the phone thing. It was in the past now.

"So, Sett. Tell me about yourself and why I should hire you?" She smiled and gestured to a bench that was nearby.

"Pleasure's all mine, Kali. Mind if I call you tha'? Or would you have me call you Boss Lady instead?" Sett gave the fiery haired girl his trademark charming grin as they grazed over the usual niceties. He too thought it was pretty serendipitous that Kali had just been standing there when he found her flier. Obviously the world was working with him to obtain a job today.

"Tha' is...quite true. You're as smart as you are pretty. Good qualities to 'ave." He nodded as he followed her to the bench. "Abou' m'self? Well, I'm a Taurus. I like popcorn lathered 'n butter and I won' deny m'self a cuppa Irish coffee." He grinned, knowing Kali probably wanted something more substantial than that.

"Only jokin'. Em, used to work at a bar. Loved it, stayed with it the longest out of all m' other jobs. I could give you some ref'rences from tha' bar in Somerset. I'm good with people, make the meanest screwdriver and I can do any heavy liftin' you need. Don' go to the gym for nuffin'," he managed not to flex his arms at the woman even though he could have. She'll see it pop out soon enough.

"What exactly are you lookin' for anyhow?"

"Kali's good. Boss lady makes me think of that one Animaniacs cartoon segment, with the little girl and the dog." Kali liked her some vintage cartoons, whenever she was home and had time to sit down, anyway. She grinned faintly and then took a seat at the bench she had previously gestured too. His charming little grin didn't escape her notice, to which she returned the grin with one of her own, though it wasn't nearly as patented as his seemed to be.

"A Taurus?" Like everything else, there had been a time when Kali was fascinated by the zodiacs, for the longest time she wanted to get a commemorative tattoo of hers on the back of her neck....you know what? She just might get it one of these days. Ever since she got her first one, the skull and cross bones on her shoulder, she's been wanting another one (her friend was correct when he told her they got addictive), and that one would be awesome! Though she may get it on her wrist, because her back hurt like a mother. She grinned a little as he continued to rattle off some likes of his. It hadn't exactly been what she had been looking for when she asked her question, but it did tell her that he was pretty laid back and had a sense of humor, which were two qualities Kali worked well with.

She snorted derisively when he said he could lift anything that should need lifting. Kali's power helped her greatly with that (she'd nearly prefected her Z-lift and forklift pantomiming, though whenever they got a shipment of liquor, she generally let the truck guys roll the boxes in on their dollies instead of doing it all herself, though at the very beginning she had. "No references necessary. Everyone knows no one ever follows through with them," not in Kali's short employee career had any one of her bosses looked at her references. She'd put her two least favorite teacher's information down, as well as her roommate (whom she said used to be her babysitter), and a guy she'd made up completely.

"As much as I love my Kafe during the day, the costs of keeping the back stocked, and with how much business that comes in kinda moot the point. The bar is what makes the better money, especially since the musical talents have been gaining notoriety. But insofar, I can only open the bar on the weekends, but I'd like to have more nights available. Especially since I am debating on expanding to a second story over the summer." She was still mulling over the idea, but the decision was pretty much already made, now it was just a matter of designing it in her mind then getting the permission and sorting out the funds.

"So you'd be helping me behind the bar, on those nights. You'd be privy to the employee discount, and a free meal during your shift." Kali was pretty lenient on all her employees like that.

"Oh!" Sett laughed when Kali mentioned that particular episode. "I remember tha' one actually. I watched it when I was in Cairo. So it was dubbed and completely hilarious." The shapeshifter moved closer to Kali as she sat down but not to freak her out, he made sure their legs didn't touch at least. He was polite that way.

"Yep, I'm supposed to be headstrong, hard to resist and pretty wild. I think I've scored on all three points." He grinned, leaning in close to her a little before leaning back into the bench. Sett wasn't the type to take things too seriously so he didn't intend to make this interview too much of a bore than it should be. He was sure Kali would appreciate him doing so.

Her snort was interpreted as Kali undermining his strength which made Sett raise an eyebrow with a grin. "Hey, don't knock my stature. I might not look like much but I can definitely do some heavy lifting." He grinned, not knowing she was a meta. "Ah good, cuz long distance calls are kinda hard to make." Sett replied in jest to her reference comment.

As she spoke of the possibilities she was envisioning for her establishment, Sett actually listened. He wasn't a good listener but he always did try. "Oh you have live music over at your cafe? Tha's bloody brill, love. I could definitely use some entertainment." Maybe he could even pick up a thing or two if the bands were so inclined to teach him that is.

"Aww yeah, I could definitely do that. Free meals, that's what I live for. I could also help you with the sound system and whatnot. You know, if you need more cash, you could always do open mic nights or even battle of the band comps and charge for tickets." He suggested when he took in the fact that she was worried about costs.

"Sounds good to me, really. And if you'd have me, I can start whenever."

Kali's eyes widened faintly when he said he saw that episode in Cairo. Like the Egypt one (she was aware that there was a Cairo in Kentucky, but something told her that wasn't the place he was talking about). She noticed he'd moved closer to her when he sat down, which set her skin to twitch a little. This was only a huge indicator to how long it's been since she'd gotten near a guy, or flirted, or anything of the sort. She tucked her bangs behind her ear and shifted in her seat. She could totally handle this. (not like she was flirting or going to flirt with him or anything, she was gonna hire him!)

He leaned in and back with a cheeky grin and an even cheekier statement. She laughed slightly and leaned her head back to look at the sky then glanced at him, thoughtfully. "Really? Hard to resist? I'm not...just not getting it." Her eyebrow lifted only faintly in a challenge. She wasn't flirting though. Oh no. This was probably her most entertaining interview so far, yes, but it was also throwing her a loop. Was this the sort of thing he tried at all his job interviews? Was it working? No. (Yes.)

"I've got the heavy lifting covered, hoss. Didn't mean to knock your manhood, there," Her hand flicked out and tapped his knee before she folded her hands behind her head and stretched her legs out and crossed her ankles. "I might not look like much..." she silently implied the rest with a grin in his general direction.

All the bands she had had so far were local, or from nearby cities. Underground bands, garage bands, rap groups, Indy guys, metal heads....Kali has lined them all up, and enjoyed each show that had been put on. The karaoke nights were also memorable and Kali loved participating. Kali was no singer, but she sure as hell loved to, she just loved the atmosphere and the cheering crowd. She grinned at his approval of having the bands and nodded her head faintly. Opening the bar on the week nights might not even rake in as much business as the weekend nights, but it was almost summer and the college would be out, with a bunch of college kids prowling around... "The second story addition would help the capacity limits the fire marshal ordered. I'd really love to fill a huge house." Kali just loved the party scene, even if she wasn't exactly participating.

"Battle of the bands..." she spoke like it hadn't crossed her mind before, because it really hadn't. Kali wasn't in any sort of band, and didn't really have a prize to offer...other than maybe offering a semi permanent performing spot on her tiny stage. That could probably work....it would of course take more planning, but Kali certainly planned to look into it. "Great idea," she admitted and beamed at him. "The mike is open on the nights that there isn't a band to play, though that is pretty few and far between. The number of small time bands these days..." It was like everyone and their brother could play instruments and wanted to be the next big hit.

"How about tonight? We'll get you acquainted with the bar and comfortable with the arrangement, meet the rest of the staff." She tapped her chin in thought. "I've just run out of name tags last week, took on some teenagers, so it might be a few days until you get one. Should you survive a night." It gets pretty crazy, and Kali couldn't pass up a chance to tease him a little more. It was just how Kali worked.

But she wasn't flirting.

Kali's resistance to his 'charms' was met with a feigned affronted look. "Really? You're not...gettin' it?" Sett asked before giving her a grin sly, sidling up to her. "You can't very well say you don't get it an' expect me to take it lyin' down do ya?" He said before moving away from her, leaning back again with that sly grin and one hand resting on the back of his head. "Oh you'll get it soon enough." He chuckled.

He turned to face her when she patted his knee and gave her a grin. "Well, if you say so boss." Secretly, he was impressed by how insistent she was about doing things on her own. Obviously she wasn't the type to go all damsel in distress on him and he was quite okay with that.

"Tha's a good idea," Sett nodded appreciatively at her idea about the second storey. It would help if she wanted to get more of the younger demographic to come in, especially if there was live music. Nothing beats a bar with live music. Especially good live music. Maybe Sett could bring in a little cash himself. But that was a story for another day.

Sett grinned when Kali complimented him on his idea. It wasn't like he was brimming with a lot of them but even he had to admit he could hit gold mines if he tried just a little. "Well who knows, you could find the next The Mary Onettes right here." He chuckled, shrugging.

"Tonight sounds great." He nodded slowly with a smile. He let Kali continue until she had the last word to which he chuckled at. "Oh I'm a survivor, don't worry. You won't get rid of me that easily." He chuckled, bumping her shoulder with his.

He slipped his phone out to check the time. "So sweetness, I've got a couple hours to kill before I have to report to this fiery redhead." Sett teased. "Wanna go and get a cup o' coffee or something?"

Apparently, not giving in to his charm was an affront to his nature--at least he would have her believe. Instead of verbally replying to him--if she did she'd make some dirty joke about him 'taking it laying down'--she just smiled knowingly at him. It was a smug smirk, her eyebrow quirked faintly when he scooted closer to her--Kali wasn't a huge stickler about 'personal space' so she wasn't alarmed or even faintly uncomfortable-- and she laughed faintly when he said she'd get it soon enough. "I'll let you know the moment it happens." Wink. She couldn't help it.

Kali couldn't remember a single instant that she went 'all damsel in distress' about anything--well maybe when she'd asked her father about getting the money to start up her business but that was it--because Kali was headstrong, stubborn, and refused to just sit back while someone did something she was perfectly capable of doing. Now, of course, Kali wasn't stupid and often asked for assistance on some things, she wasn't stupid, however Kali had too much pride to be a 'damsel.' She was a lioness. Rawr.

A second story would open a lot more opportunity for everything, it was just a matter of getting it approved by the city board--she had been playing with the idea of a patio area as well, not that it was warming up again-- and then arranging for some guy with a hard hat to come look at what they have to work with.

She smirked when he said he was a survivor--he'd have to be. It got hectic sometimes. She mused to herself for a moment about maybe rearranging her liquor wall--don't really know what got her thinking about it--while he checked his phone for the time. Sweetness? She held back a derisive snort--she couldn't say she didn't like the attention--and grinned in his direction. "As it so happened, I was on the way to the store to pick up some stock we've run out on." She batted her eyelashes. "You can carry the really heavy bags." She patted one of his arms--it took a lot of control not to give his arm a little squeeze--and stood up with a proud smile on her face.

"Shall we?"
