“Ten bucks? You people are killing me.” L.C. muttered to herself, looking at a pair of hairclips that had the union jack. They looked so cute and she wanted them- she hadn’t splurged on herself in quite a while, and with all this money Sean was giving her, she deserved it. But ten bucks for a pair of dinky plastic hairclips was ridiculous, so much so that she was ready to put them back and move on. She had set them down on the shelf, ready to pack up and go, but he fingers suddenly twitched, and she found herself keeping hold, thinking hard.
It wouldn’t hurt anyone if she just took it. They were only hairclips. It wasn’t like she was taking something really important, they didn’t mean anything. She had stolen a lot more expensive items in her heyday; jewelry, gloves, wallets, shoes... A couple of hairpins were small change compared to all that. No one would miss them. They’d probably just mark them as lost or damaged, if they even realized they were gone, which was highly unlikely.
But Sean would be so disappointed in her. John too. What if she got caught? A misdemeanor on her record would make it even harder for her to find a job, let alone hold one if she managed. No, it was best if she put them back.
...Fat chance.
L.C. took them and they found their way into her bag as she turned, surveying the people around her to see if anyone noticed. It didn’t look like anyone saw, and that was just what she wanted to hear- the sound of silence. No accusations or threats, just the sweet, sweet sound of nobody giving a damn what some nobody teenager was doing. She smiled as she flipped her bag closed, closing her eyes to give herself a final rationalization boost as she walked down the main isle, peering down the sides as she looked for stuff that was actually worth buying.
