"I'm sorry? Oh, I'm the new assistant counselor. The Xander to Dr. Neville's Buffy, if you will."

Ferris had seen bits and pieces of the show before he'd left for Europe, and was working through the box sets of the various Whedon properties. So far he had a fondness for the first season of Angel (the office phones all had cords and the payphones still cost a quarter!) and the seasons of Buffy that included Oz. "Or the Buffy to the good doctor's Giles, maybe."

"What do you do at Hammel?"

"Kitchen staff," he replied cheerfully, "Though you may know me by the big white bowls of treats I leave in the Staff Lounge." Which also contained little signs on wooden chopstics with what the bowls contained plus any allergens, be it lemon bars, triple chocolate cookies, or raspberry oat squares, and signed 'From Ferris'.

When Sean entered Ferris gave him a wave, but then his smile widened and he said, "Mr. Bernstein! We meet again!"

The formality was a joke, he couldn't help it. Seeing the doctor made Ferris feel a little formal. Like some of the other ex-students he still thought of the man as Dr. Neville, though he'd manage to avoid him during his short tenure as a student.

When Devon came back with the drinks, Ferris leaned his cue against the pool table and held up a hand that said he'd be right back and moseyed over to the bar. Even though Devon was paying, he still took out a few ones for a tip, and when he had the bartender's attention, he smiled and said, "Club soda with lime, please."

Allowing the bar's function room to be hired out for private events was a decision that had taken much weighing up before Cecil had made it. On the one hand it would, if popular enough, provide a nice subsidiary income to back up the general bar sales. On the other hand private parties could often be a nightmare to handle and were often horrific to clean up after, sometimes making the extra money they had the potential to bring in not at all worth the effort. In the end he had decided to give it a trial run for a few months to see what happened, with the currently ongoing party being the first booked.

They were a group of school teachers. It couldn't be too bad, right?

Cecil had sent most of his staff to run the bar for the teachers party and keep an eye on things in there, while he himself was running the main bar and keeping the rest of the pub ticking over. Overall it was fairly quiet outside the function room, so after dropping off the cheese and pickle sandwich one of the regulars had ordered the Welshman made a detour to the bar of the function room to see what was going on in there.

It appeared that he had arrived right in the middle of a rather hefty drinks order overload and he jumped right in to help out, taking the order of the man that managed to catch his attention. “Sure mate, coming now.” Pouring out the soda, Cecil gave him a friendly smile. “Did you draw the short straw to be the driver?”

Josh was never one to turn down a party, and so when Sean had mentioned a staff gathering the invitation had hardly been given before he had accepted. However, he wasn't prepared for how surreal it felt to walk into the party and not recognize most of the people there. The last time that had happened had been the unfortunate poker incident when he had first moved here...

But Clarisse had returned to Europe, and Anya had also moved away. Stephen hadn't remained for long after breaking up with Riley, and although he knew Midori was still employed with Hammel he didn't see her.

Perhaps she had been unable to secure babysitting for the evening.

Then someone called his name and he waved in excitement. "Mr. Macklin! It's a pleasure to see you again!"

But then Ferris' attention was diverted by the bartender. Not that Josh blamed him; bars and the people who provided alcohol were worth paying attention to at parties. This still meant he only was vaguely acquainted with one person at the party, and his partner. No, there was Mr. Kenney, but although Josh was friends with his roommate he and Hart had one too many differences of opinions to be friends.

"A lot of new staff recently?" He whispered to Sean in curiosity. Sometimes the school seemed to have quite the turnover with faculty. He imagined that working with children, especially those with the additional ability to burn down their desks on accident or to know your feelings no matter how you hid them, had to be trying at best.

Sean had to moderate his alcohol intake, both because he and Josh had agreed to do so together for the younger man’s health, as well as because they had to return home to Bailey tonight, and couldn’t do so in a sloppy manner. However, those obligations wouldn’t prevent him from having a drink or two, and the telepath fully intended to take advantage of the available options.

“Some of us had to pick up our partners from work and make sure there was food on the table at home,” Sean said to Renee, although the smile remained on his lips to show that, while that statement was true, it was also intended as gentle teasing. He moved closer to her and offered her a hug.

He then turned to Devon, offering him a smile and a nod of his head in greeting. “Thank you for the invitation. How are you tonight?” He fell back on pleasantries, because he was genuinely interested in the younger man’s day, but he also wanted Devon to be comfortable with him. Their first meeting had been under unfortunate circumstances, but he thought no less of the art teacher as a result. He had done nothing wrong, and he was not at fault; both of which he had assured the younger man during their meeting.

In response to his partner’s question, he nodded, “We had some new hires with the new term. I’ll introduce you to everyone.” Most of the hires were so young, comparatively, but that was bound to happen.

Stepping up to the bar, he said, “I’ll take a scotch on the rocks and a Manhattan.”

It was common sense that people like doctors and lawyers could be cheerful and happy, even when movies and TV and books (which were of course horrible sources for fact) said otherwise. Still, Josh Bernstein had to be one of the most effusive people Ferris had ever met, and it was a private source of amusement that he was also a lawyer. It was just unfortunate he was partners with a man who made Ferris like a teenager again. Thinking of Dr. Neville and Mr. Bernstein... he guessed opposites did attract.

Smiling back at the bartender as he filled a glass, he slid the two singles over. He didn't care if it was an overly generous tip, he knew there would be plenty of people who didn't know the rules of tipping to even him out later on. Ferris had never worked the service end of the restaurant business, but he certainly felt for those who did.

“Did you draw the short straw to be the driver?”

"'F someone gets so bad in the next half hour they don't mind being flung over the back end of a bike rack..." he shrugged, grinning. When the lime was squeezed (nice, most just tossed the slice in) and deposited, Ferris nodded and gave his thanks. Before he took himself back to the group, he stopped by the punchbowl and poured a little of the virgin into his club soda.

Striding back to the growing knots of people, he grinned at Josh. "I should be less surprised to see you than I am. Oh god." He laughed quietly and smothered the yawn he'd felt climbing out of his throat in his elbow. "My minions are going to hate me tomorrow. Do you know Devon?" Ferris used his free hand to point out the overly-huggy Brit. "He's also my neighbor. Along with a recruiter. Small world."

In the days that had followed his meeting with Sean Devon had calmed down exponentially, but the thought of it still gave him a slight unease. He knew it wasn't his fault and he hadn't actually done anything wrong, but first impressions counted for a lot and he had made a superbly shitty one. He was smart enough to realise that the psychiatrist probably didn't hate him or (overly) judge him, but he often had issues letting go of things and still felt that he had to prove that he wasn't as inept or weak-willed as he must have come across that day when he had been forced to pay Sean a visit.

Still, he gave Sean and the man who arrived with him his trademark bright smile and returned the nod of greeting. “No worries, glad you could make it. I'm doing great thanks, settling in to the new house all right. Hope the summer's been good to ya.” He took a decent swig of his vodka and coke and gestured towards the table of food. “I know I promised you muffins, but I hope a cupcake will fill the void in the meantime.”

Taking another sip, he made a mental note that he was supposed to be pacing himself. Grey eyes scanned the room, making sure everyone had a drink and was at least talking to someone, if not actually partaking in any activity. Seeking to get things started, Devon flipped open the book of song available for the karaoke machine and started browsing through song titles, looking for that special something to get things moving.

Maiella points at her friend with an expression lacking in amusement. She knew that look, that detachment of one who was just going to sneak off and leave her the second the opportunity came up!

“Ohnoyoudont! I’m on to you Velli.” She clings to her friend’s arm to bring her over to the bar in particular. There’s a bartender and it looks like he could make some tasty drinks! The cheerful brunette spins to her friend, giving her the most pleading puppy dog-eyed pout. And given her eyes, that was extremely easy to pull off.

“It’s been years since we had drinks that were not spurned by a death or bad luck. I’ll ask for one thing: one drink with me before you go scurrying off back to your office, kay? Or I will make you do SO many push-ups in vengence!”

Velli was not the social type, so that was inevitable she would bail as soon as possible, but not yet! She spun her attention and flagged down the bartender.

“Appletini for me and anything she wants, sweetie~ Oh and Velli! I was super proud when I found out you became a trainer. Really, a perfect job for you! How many kids have you traumatized so far? <3”

Oh, but she meant it far more out of love for her friend than an insult. Given the beast of a person who had trained Valentia all those years, some traumatized students had to be a normal occurance. The brunette in blue flicked her attention over towards the karaoke machine, her eyes lighting up immediately. my goodness, how she LOVED karaoke! A couple of more drinks in her system and she was going to be on a roll tonight.

“Hey, hey! Pick something energetic, okay?” She shouted over to the gentleman sifting through the selection of music.

As Ferris drifted elsewhere, Evan felt himself temporarily at a loss. A sinking feeling began to settle in the pit of his stomach as delegations from his nerves demanded to know what he was doing at this party. Nerves were nothing new to him: even at his most social there was always that gnawing feeling of insecurity behind his eyeballs, but these were his . . . what? His colleagues? His superiors? He drizzled the Jameson onto the back of his throat, sending it to conspire with his pregame vodka.

Taking a deep breath, Evan moseyed over to Mr. Wentworth and the karaoke machine. He was less of a singer than he was a socialite, but he'd be dog-damned if he let himself mire in it. If he was going to feel awkward and anxious, he was going to EARN it, dammit.

"Do you need a sacrificial lamb to the karaoke gods?" he asked, sidling up to Mr. Wentworth (Devon? D-Wenty? Evan wasn't sure of the protocol here), "because I'm more than willing to make an ass of myself up there if they have any Bon Jovi or Rolling Stones."

Despite the fact Cecil owned the place he always made an effort to involve himself with the day-to-day working of it as much as he possibly could. He'd been behind a bar on and off for most of his adult life; it was like a second home to him after all these years and he could never imagine himself as the kind of bar owner who just lay around and got fat off the profits. It wasn't at all his style of management. Besides he was a socialite, and there were few better places to meet a huge variety of people than behind a buzzing bar.

“Oh, Diolch!* Cheers very much! You're welcome back whenever you like.” Cecil laughed and gave a charming smile as the man slid the notes across, the Welshie taking the notes and slotting them into the jar behind the bar that collected the tips that he got given. The rest of the staff got to keep whatever tips they earned, but the ones he got were shared out between them all at the end of the night. He indicated to no-one in particular. “The way some of your mates are knocking it down, they might take you up on that offer.”

Sending Becky to go and keep tabs on the main bar, Cecil nodded when an older gentleman placed his order. “Yes sir, coming right up.” Cecil stirred the whisky, vermouth and Angostura bitter with cracked ice before straining it into a chilled cocktail glass, balancing a cherry by its long stalk on the rim so it could be added or disposed of as wanted. After preparing the scotch he slid both across the bar towards the man who had ordered them. “Enjoy.”

Turning his attention towards the brunette lady, he gave her a pleasant smile as she ordered an appletini and then looked towards her friend. “What can I get'cha, miss?”

"Your neighbor?" Josh repeated, taking in their host. It wasn't as if Pilot Ridge was very large, so it made sense that some people he knew would live close to other acquaintances. "No, I haven't. Not yet." He gave Mr. Wentsworth a smile and a wave as the younger man retreated to karaoke.

"Oh, are we expected to sing?" He nudged Sean with one elbow, amusement lighting up his face. "That's just up your alley, I'm sure you'll be first in line."

Catching sight of the smile and wave from Sean's companion, Devon returned it with a bright smile of his own and a little flourish of a bow before he dived into the depths of the karaoke book, looking for that perfect song to get the night going. “No, no, no, no...” He flicked through the pages of boring cheesy bar junk, looking up at the pretty brunette woman who shouted over to him. He gave her a grin and a small salute “yes ma'am!”

As the other man wandered over Devon's grin brightened, the art teacher loosely hooking an arm over his shoulder and gently steering him to the book. “Heeey, good to see you over here! If you wanna go first you're more than welcome to grab the reins, or we could duet. I'm easy either way.” He flicked back through the book to where he thought he'd seen some Rolling Stones. “Paint it Black's always good, or Sympathy for the Devil.” He gave a vague shrug. “Or Bon Jovi. Anythin' but Living on a Prayer.” He laughed merrily, perfectly in his element.

Midori was running late, unsurprisingly. Eli had been doing some overtime in the library, something about marking in the new incoming shipment of books he'd gotten that week, and she could just see him losing track of time as he flipped through the new arrivals. Because he was busy, she had asked her brother to come down and babysit for her. He'd only been too happy to, even bringing his daughter Robyn with him to play with her cousin. Of course, they'd run late in order to get Robyn ready, and Tory had had a small meltdown when he'd seen his mother about to leave without him. He was getting into an odd phase of being particularly clingy recently, and she wasn't quite sure what to do with him.

At least his uncle had managed to calm him down long enough for her to slip out. It felt strange to be going to a staff event without her best friend, but he'd told her that if she wanted to go, she should go. It also felt weird to not be wearing what she'd started to dub as her 'Mommy Gear' outside of her business wear at work. After some digging, and a pleasant surprise that it fit like it should, she'd decided on a navy blue dress, along with her favorite heels that she didn't have enough excuses to wear anymore. ... Yeah, definitely weird, but she was looking forward to seeing everyone outside of work. She spent so much time away from Hammel, or in the recruiter bullpen that it would be nice to see everyone else.

At the door she flashed her recruitment ID badge to gain access, and then headed inside. She didn't particularly want to hit the bar, so she looked for people she knew instead. Devon was easy to spot, and she had to smile as his antics with the machine. The art teacher had fast become one of her favorite people since he'd been so nice to Tory. She also spied Sean and Josh, and decided that they were her best bet. Bypassing the bar, she headed up to them and smiled brightly. "Hello Sean, Josh. How are you?"

Sean smiled at the prospect of cupcakes. “A cupcake will certainly fill the void,” he remarked, glancing over at the refreshment table. He would have to peruse as soon as he and Josh had their drinks. “Did you bake them yourself?”

Devon would have to meet the other bakers in town. The telepath could arrange that at a later date.

When the drinks arrived, Sean pulled out money to pay, including a tip. He took both with a smile and a “Thank you,” before handing the Manhattan to his partner.

He had only managed a sip before Josh elbowed him, and he glanced over at the karaoke stage. That earned a deep chuckle, as he rolled his eyes. “Of course I will. And then, after you and I have been run out on a rail, we can regroup and create new identities.”

Under no circumstances should the telepath sing. Josh might tolerate his voice because of their deep affection, but that didn’t constitute a valid reason to subject his coworkers to that miserable experience.

Sensing Midori’s presence, and hearing her voice, he turned to smile at the younger woman. “Midori, so wonderful to see you. Now it’s a party!”

He assumed that Eli was babysitting Tori. “Let me get you a drink.”

Renee carted her drink, a tequila sunrise, and another's to the small company, her face absolutely beaming with enthusiasm.

Renee giggled like the feminine dame she was, and, after setting the drinks down on a nearby table, she opened her arms to embrace her old friend, teacher, and counselor. "You really don't know how to ease up, do you Sean?" she teased back.

Once they separated, Renee turned to Josh and offered him a smile and the back of her dainty hand as if she expected him to kiss it as if he were a duke and she a duchess. "Nice to see you again, Josh."

"Do you know Devon? He's also my neighbor."

"Oh, are you guys? I never would have guessed. No wonder you get along so well." She gave Devon a friendly punch in the arm and a wink. Renee couldn't quite explain the appeal, but she had grown a certain attachment to her new college Devon and her gaze followed him as he ventured to the karaoke songbook. "So what are you going to sing for us, Mr. Performer there? Or is it a surprise?" Then she replaced her Sunrise from the table, followed the young Evan Coleman to Devon's side. The two men were absurdly tall, or at least massive enough to take up the view of the whole book, and so, feeling left out especially since she was a such karaoke diva, Renee stepped up behind Evan and Devon and placed her hands lightly upon each of their shoulders as she tip-toed over them to view the book. "Do they have anything good?"

"Anythin' but Living on a Prayer."

"Aww…but that's my favorite!" she exclaimed with a hint of sarcasm. Though she really did love the song, it was best left to the original artist and not butchered by drunk adults. "Do they have any Blondie?" she inquired of the two boys.

"Oh, are you guys? I never would have guessed. No wonder you get along so well."

"Well. You know. We're both such paragons of maturity," said the man in the Kermit the Frog t-shirt.

The place was slowly filling up, and Ferris smiled and shook his head a little when he saw Devon and Evan at the karaoke. He could carry a tune and was okay for stuff like 'happy birthday' and singing in the shower, but nope. Not karaoke. Sounded like Dr. Neville wasn't much for singing either. That was kind of nice to hear, not to be mean, but to know the man had some sort of fault. He watched Renee saunter off and hoped he could duck out before the singing started.

Back to Josh, he said, "How's lawyering? Mn. I bet you can't talk about that. Oh." He grinned. "Had any sandwiches worth talking about then?"
