Today we're interviewing Mr. Nicholas Kells. Nick is relatively new to the area. I believe you moved to Pilot Ridge about a year ago?
Yeah, it’s been close to a year now. Although I’m still working on settling in.
How do you enjoy small town Vermont? Is it different from what you're used to?
I’ve always enjoyed small towns. Lower crime rates, close knit communities, and all that. I’ve lived a few places around the country, but I’ve always preferred small towns.
Is there anything in particular you really enjoy about Pilot Ridge?
Like I said, I’ve always preferred to live in small towns, but I also really enjoy my job here. I feel like I have the chance to make a difference. Not to mention my love/hate relationship with the meta community in Pilot Ridge.
Is there anything you miss about your life before Pilot Ridge?
Before I made the move to Pilot Ridge, I was an army recruiter. Although I was based out of a small town in New Jersey, I traveled a good deal of the time. It was nice to have a chance of scenery from time to time, but I have to admit I am enjoying the sense of stability staying on one place can bring you.
Pilot Ridge has been buzzing with talk about Operation Patriot since they first arrived in town last year. Can you tell us a little bit about them?
Operation Patriot is a government organization designed to assist metas and fight for their welfare. Metas have been part of this country for quite a while. It’s nice to be a part of the government recognizing the need to do their part to protect and serve them. Total crap if you ask me, Operation Patriot is there to keep a close eye on the freaks, and I’m more than happy to sign up for that job.
So what is it you do with Operation Patriot, exactly?
For the most part I work as a liaison between the army (and other similar government organizations) and Operation Patriot. Although we are also a government institution, we are more focused on the serving the meta community. I also help recruit and place metas in jobs where they can have a vital role in changing the way their country views metas in general. I also do some recruiting of my own for more…personal desires and strategies.
And what did you do before working for them?
I worked at an army recruiting station, helping young men and women consider the possibility of protecting and serving our great country.
So you're a veteran! What inspired you to join the army?
My father was a military man and I’d always wanted to follow in his footsteps to do my part for our country. It didn’t hurt that I had just been divorced with my wife and no real direction in my life.
You must have really looked up to your father, to follow in his footsteps. Were the two of you close?
My father is a great man and I try ever day to live up to that greatness. At the same time, I’m not sure that “close” is the right word to describe our relationship. We are still in contact with one another, however.
Why did you decide to change careers?
I don’t really see it as that big of a change. I’m just serving a more specific part of the population.
Do you find that your career path is somewhat controversial in Vermont?
There is a lot of buzz around about Operation Patriot, but I think that with time, the community will see that Operation Patriot is here to help, not hinder, the meta community. Who cares what those freaks think? By the time they figure out why I’m here, the damage will already be done.
I hear you get on well with children. Do you have any of your own?
I don’t have any kids, although I do enjoy spending time with them. There’s no way I’m giving you any information about Rachel with all the freaks who read this paper.
Do you hope to have children one day?
I think I would be a good father, after all I had a great example.
What else do you enjoy doing?
Beside’s my job? I like to keep in shape, so I try to spend a lot of time going for runs around the town. It helps me too meet others and see the community as well. I also spend a every waking moment plotting the future of sub-human freaks.
When did your interest in fitness start?
Even as a boy, I understood the need to keep up with my physical fitness, but after joining the army I really kicked it into high gears. I’ve had plans for those freaks for years now, but after one of them blew me up overseas, I developed a more personal vendetta.
You're Baseline, correct? What made you interested in helping out the Meta community?
Yes I am. Although I prefer “human” or “as nature intended”. Part of being in the army is learning to stand up for those that don’t always have a chance to stand up for themselves. Although I’m sure metas are capable, I would like to be part of the fight for their equality. Part of the fight is right…but equality? How could sub-humans ever expect to me my equal?
Can you tell us a bit about your time in the military? It must be quieter here in Vermont.
The military is all discipline and order. You wake up each day with a precise list of directives, so living anywhere outside of that is always different. And yes, Vermont is much quieter with its lack of drill sergeants.
It's almost summer, do you have any plans? Or is your job keeping you here?
Operation Patriot is still just getting starting, so I’ll be sticking around for the summer for the most part. But if the chance for some time off comes along, I might be tempted to take it. And I always have plans.
Thank you for your time, Mr. Kells! It's been wonderful talking with you. I wish you much success in helping out the meta community with Operation Patriot.
Nick was a requested character, right? What was it about the request that made you decide to pick him up?
I’d have to say the “Needed” in the title of the thread for his request was what really caught my eye. But after looking over the other Operation Patriot request, I really liked the idea of taking on Nick. It’s always interesting to play the other side of the coin.
What do you like about playing him?
I get to be evil. And I get to see things from a different perspective than the rest of my characters (who are all metas). And although Harmony is annoying and angry all the time, she doesn’t have the brains to back it up like Nick does.
How is Nick similar or different from your other characters? Does he have any traits you find yourself using a lot?
There are a few. Nick and AJ both have problems relating to their parents. But in Nick’s case he tries his best to live up to their expectations while AJ has never really bothered. Harmony and Nick both had a certain taste for conflict, although Harmony hardly ever has a reason for it, while Nick tries to have a reason for everything he does. Ricio, Stefan, and Nick all have problems with commitment and long lasting relationships.
I hate to admit it, but I do share Nick’s trait of sometimes saying one thing and thinking something completely different. But I hope that I’m never as hateful as Nick is most of the time.
Are there any characters you really enjoy playing Nick against? Any relationships you just get giddy over?
I have fun with him and the students at Hammel. It’s the stuff that his thinking that really makes the situation interesting for me. He’s all polite and smiles, but underneath he’s wishing he could smack them and throw them away on an icecap for life. I’m also really excited about him meeting more adult metas and possibly befriending them.
And what was your favorite thread with Nick? (include a link if you can please?)
I’m currently enjoying Thread Roulette: Potential with Chase. It’s always fun to see Nick in a different mode than his usual evilness. But I think Power Swap: Conspiracies and Accusations with Josh is my all time favorite. It was nice to really let him fly off the handle for once.
Do you have any plans or goals for Nick that you're willing to share?
Evilness does not reveal its plans. (insert wicked laughter here)
Thank you very much for answering! And to all our readers, don't forget to check out Nick's bio here and of course take a look at Abi's plot page if you want to thread with Nick!
