Today we are interviewing Mr. Ivan Avlang. Ivan is a transplant from Russia. You've been in Vermont for two years, is that right?
That is correct. Give or take some time spent tying up loose ends and getting shot at.
And you're with famous heiress Anastasia van Drakke. What exactly is your relationship with Ms. van Drakke?
She is very important to me. I could not imagine life without her. There are no words that truly capture what we are, and if there were I would not be sharing them with you.
How did the two of you meet?
How do people ever meet? She needed help. I was in the right place at the right time. The death I gave those men was a mercy in comparison to what I wish I could have done.
Ms. van Drakke is very well known. Do you find this makes daily errands difficult?
Not as much as you would think. As if anyone could get in my way.
And what brought you and Ms. van Drakke to Pilot Ridge?
We wanted less chaos in life. And at the time, we knew some people.
Coming to the United States from Russia must be a huge culture shock. Do you miss your home country?
Eh... Not particularly. The coffee was better, though. I sometimes enjoy visuals in which my home country burns. Although the coffee here is inferior.
Recently the two of you have been seen with Hammel student Katurian Arsov. Are you friends with his aunt Yulia Sokolov?
Eva has met her, yes. I have not had the pleasure. Friends is the longest shot anyone could take here.
I hear you like to paint. When did you become interested in painting?
I was very young.
And who are some of your artistic influences?
Claude Monet. Henri Matisse. Perhaps Vincent van Gough. Recently Julia Dolgorukova. And who I like to sometimes think my namesake might have been, Ivan Shishkin and Kramskoi. All great artists.
Rumor has it that you did most of the decorating and food preparation at Ms. van Drakke's famous Halloween party. Is that true?
Of course. I enjoyed it. And nobody else would have made anything the way I wanted.
Do the two of you plan on hosting any parties this year?
You would have to ask her that. Most likely.
Do you have any other hobbies?
None to speak of.
You were also in the Russian military, is that correct? What was that like?
Not pleasant. Complete hell.
Some people are afraid Operation Patriot will begin drafting meta humans into the United States military. Do you have any opinions on those fears?
[Long pause] I would hope that they would know better. They better fucking not. We will not stand for it.
You aren't seen with many people other than Ms. van Drakke and Katurian. Have you found making friends as a foreigner is difficult?
That depends on your view. I would like to think I have made a few... friends. Mister Adams, Riley Adams, he is a pleasant man. And we did enjoy the company of Mister Bernstein, although we have not been able to reach him recently. I'm not entirely sure what counts as "friends" to you people is the proper definition, either.
How did you meet Mister Adams?
He was introduced to us, actually. I am glad for it. He makes very good pie.
What is it you do for Ms. van Drakke, exactly?
I keep the house. Basically I'm her bodyguard and housekeeper. Among other things.
If you could choose another career what would it be?
Interesting question. I have not often thought of that. What reason would I have to be anything other than what I have been?
Do you have any special recipes or favorite foods to make?
Stews and pastries. They are interesting and turn out wonderfully.
Are you primarily a painter or do you work in other mediums as well?
I do work in others, such as ink, but in the end paint is what I know the best and it is what I enjoy the most. It helps that my ability is linked to my painting.
And of course our interviews wouldn't be complete without questions for Ysa.
So Ysa, Ivan is an adoption. Has it been difficult writing a character who was previously written by another player?
Sort of. I always end up infinitely checking myself every time I write with him, but in the end I do love him as a character. Think about it this way: You've just read a book for maybe the second or third time. Suddenly someone walks up to you and says "Hey so I know you write pretty decently. Write a sequel to that book for me." That is pretty much the experience the way I see it. You end up making what you're pretty sure is a decent portrayal of everything, but still questioning whether this is in-character for at least a bit of it.
At least I have significantly less than a million readers and nobody'll ever be questioning me the way I keep thinking someone will. xDPanopticon and all that. Look it up, super cool concept.
What made you decide to pick Ivan up?
Back when I had no clue what the WPW was for and just took it as one of many forms that I got seriously confused over, I did not know who was playing which characters. I just saw the characters and thought "Hey, that's pretty awesome." Eva... Let's just say in the beginning I thought she was amazing. Rather mad, but amazing. And then (yes at this point in the timeline I know who she plays) I was talking to Neon about wanting to pick up a character, but someone else had inquired about him already. We got to talking, and suddenly I was writing an app.
And I'd do it again. ;3
What is your favorite thread with him so far (include links please)?
Well he hasn't been in many. I'm horrible, I know. |D Ahaha, I should work on that. But I am having fun with Sign It Babushka. Sandrine and Neon are both so great to write with, and Kat's justadorableawesome.
How is Ivan the same or different from your other characters?
Well, he's the same in that he has a lovely (read: dry) sense of humour. And I noticed recently that I tend to make characters with a seriously loyal streak in 'em. He's different because he's a little... darker, I guess, than I usually like to make things. And because of his background, he's rather aggressive but unable to really release that energy into much of anything as of late. At least he has his art.
Do you have any plans or goals for Ivan that you can share with us?
I'm not too sure. Right now my goal is to get him rolling a bit more smoothly. And, y'know, Spoilers, love.
Thanks, Ysa! For anyone interested in plotting with Ivan go check out his profile and shoot Ysa a PM!
