Let the flames begin (Peyton)

Ryder walked out of his room; he was tired of being coped up in his dorm room. He needed to go out and do something! He was glad school was over for the day, but it sucked when he didn’t have any plans for when it ended! He had been playing around with his power, of toy manipulation. Okay, okay, he was really playing with toys in general; which he would like to say would shout out to the world that he still does, butttt he most likely, probably wouldn’t.

He walked out of the dorm building passing people, waving, smiling, all the good jazz. He walked some more; he really didn’t know where he was going. Till he got to the training field that was, well he hadn’t actually meant to come here, but this was a place he hadn’t actually been too. He didn’t know that the training field doubled as the sports field. He grinned as he saw the bleachers, not the perfect place to do parkour, but it was good enough.

The new student ran over to the bleachers, when he got close enough he did a front flip onto the bottom bleacher. Then did a back flip onto the next, higher bleacher, and keep doing back flips like this till he got to the top. Once he got to the top, he was panting, he wiped the sweat dripping down his forehead with his forearm. Sitting down on the bleacher, he needed to catch his breath; he hadn’t realize how long it had been since he did parkour… He hadn’t done it since a few months before he moved to Hammel in June.

While not usually one for exercise, per say, the day was bright and sunny and Peyton was glad to be out of class. He never used the training field for his power - it wasn't exactly something that could be practiced there - but he was curious to see what it looked like. And, assuming that there was probably some sort of target practice facilities, he'd stopped by his dorm room on the way to pick up one of his vast collection of Nerf guns. While the zombie battle had been fun, it had devolved into more of a 'shoot-at-every-freakin'-thing-oh-my-god-its-still-moving-shoot-it' sort of event. Which had been fun, too. But there was never enough Nerf. Never. Nerfver.

So he'd picked up one of the disc-shooting models and an extra clip of ammo, and had headed to the training field.

But it was afternoon. And his meds were wearing off. And he was very easily distracted.

"Holy fuck - ninja!" Peyton's grin was lighthearted and a little goofy as he shouted the observation, pointing to the kid on the bleachers just as he was sitting down. He shot a disc at the kid (so far away that it probably wouldn't even hit him, let alone do anything but bounce harmlessly off of him), and jogged toward him. "Yo!" He smiled at the guy, pretty amazed by this kid's talents. As he got closer, he waved, shouting up from the base of the bleachers. "Hey man, that was pretty awesome! It's like you're half man half monkey - how do you do that?"

Ryder heard someone shout from the field, he had only caught ‘ninja’ because let’s face his. His mind had been somewhere else since he had sat down. It always did, he couldn’t help it of course. He had been daydreaming about his ferrets, his new ferrets he had gotten, and how he wanted to make a video of them doing something cute and stupid, and put it on youtube. Speaking of youtube, he needed to put up a video period, it had been months since he had.

It wasn’t till the boy on the field shot a disc at him that made Ryder pull his attention away from his own thoughts though. He looked at the disc that had stopped a few bleachers down, then at the kid how was running up the bleachers. Ryder got up and headed for the disc picking it up, then nodding at the boy. “Hey, Thanks!” He smirked at the boy’s weird compliment, but he liked monkeys so he did take it as a compliment. He shrugged “A couple months of practice. Are you really interested in it?” He held the disc out, “This is yours, right?” He observed the little nerf gun “Pretty impressive toy. Nerfs are all kinds of awesome!”

Peyton's grin was open and energetic as he bounded up the bleachers to retrieve his ammo. "Really, only a couple months?! Dude, impressive! - Thanks," he added as he took the disc, loading it back into his ammo clip. "I'm a bit of a Nerf connoisseur..." he emphasized the last word with an extravagant joking accent, his standard crooked grin in place shortly afterward. "I love me some good ol' fashioned foam weaponry."

Had this guy asked something? He had, hadn't he? Something about his cool flipping stuff, right? ....Oh, yeah- "I'm very interested, by the way, that-" Peyton made a little hand gesture between this guy and the bleachers, referring to his earlier acrobatics, "- was fuckin' A." He nodded enthusiastically before realizing he hadn't yet introduced himself. "Oh - I'm Peyton, if you were wondering," he gave a casual mini-salute in greeting, "I'm new to Hammel, just got here a few days ago, maybe a week." He didn't really keep track of it that much. He was still exploring everywhere and meeting everyone he could. And this guy seemed like a cool guy to meet.

“Yeah, well I’ve been going parkour since I was…” He had to do the stupid math… “Twelve?? So about five? Years…” He shrugged, granted when he first started, he hadn’t known it was called parkour, he had just liked to jump off shit and do flips. Ryder grinned “Those are the best kinds of connoisseurs. Though, I’m more of a general toy connoisseur.” He really didn’t know why he had just told the guy that… Like he rarely told people about his toy collection; but this guy seemed cool enough to know about it. “Foam weaponry is the best. Like seriously, how awesome would the world be if they stopped making actual weapons, and replaced them all with foam ones?” Food for thought.

Ryder scratched the back of his head, “Awesome! So, hell, I could teach you if you want?” Because, why not? Even though there wasn’t much teaching involved, just lot of practicing and injuries.. “You might break something though along the way.” Yes he was talking about bones. “I had not started wondering, but I’m Ryder, nice to meet you!” Ryder did the same back, yeah, he really liked this guy; he seemed really cool, and really fun. “oh! Really, I’m semi new too, I’ve only been here for a few months.”

"Sweet, man, that's some serious dedication," Peyton nodded as the guy gave his background, legitimately impressed. Yes, Peyton had been sailing for that long (longer, probably) but sailing was not badass ninja flips. It was no where near badass ninja flips. Badass ninja flips belonged in a category far above sailing. If sailing were the Death Valley, badass ninja flips would be Mount Everest.

Toy connoisseur? He could dig it. He held nothing against toys. He just preferred the kinds with moving parts. And would probably never admit (to a girl, anyway) that he was all for playing with toys. He was a kid. He was allowed to do kid stuff. Plus, he had a younger brother, so he had an excuse to still be playing with toys. An excuse that he used often. Probably more often that most people his age. So he felt a kinship with this guy.

“Foam weaponry is the best. Like seriously, how awesome would the world be if they stopped making actual weapons, and replaced them all with foam ones?”

Peyton gave a look of mock thought, though his words weren't entirely in jest. "Yeah, sometimes I think that... and then I realize explosions are awesome. It's very hard to reconcile those two things." A second later, his eyes lit up, "Except for maybe an explosion of foam."

At the mention of teaching, Peyton cocked his head, intrigued and excited. "For serious? That would be awesome!" Break something? "Psh - I'm tougher than I look." He smirked and imitated popping his collar - though he wasn't wearing one.

"Ryder - sweet name, I'm a big fan of the Y. Because, why? Why, that Y is why we are both awesome!" Stupid stupid joke. He didn't especially care. He was a dork. He could deal with that.

He didn't really recognize it at the moment, but he was having what some call 'summer camp emergency bonding syndrome'. Which is something that happens when someone is thrown into a new environment, like starting a new school, a new job, or at a summer camp (especially camp and other places where everyone is new). In haste to create a friend group, people are more open to making friends - and close friends - with people who they've just met, accelerating the bonding process in order to have a close group with which they may identify.

But beyond the mockery of scientifics - this guy was someone Peyton could see being friends with. Best friends with. But he wasn't about to go into this blindly. There were still hurdles to be passed. He just couldn't think of any at the moment because he was blinded by Ryder's awesome.

"Dude, are you busy now? I was just gonna do a bit of target practice, but if you're free I'm all in for this ninja business."

Ryder would never admit to his toy collection to anyone he was honestly interested in going out with. He didn’t want to look like a dork early on, he would work his way up to it. Not that he has had any dates since he moved to Hammel, but he hadn’t been here for that long either.


Ryder shrugged, he wasn’t thinking on the play/cool sides of things. But there would be less murders and wars going on around the world. Yes, this topic was very serious to him, and the idea wasn’t something he was joking about. He smiled, “Yeah explosions of foam would be awesome.” Ryder nodded to the boy being up for parkour teaching. “Cool!” He laughed at Peyton’s joke, “Nice one. So, are we like the Y team now?”

“Nah, I’m not. Let’s do it! Do you know how to do flips?” In other words, could he do a flip? Or were they going to have to start from scratch.

"So, are we like the Y team now?”

Hell, he had already showed he was a dork, he might as well top it off. "Well, y'know - XY chromosomes are guys, so sure. At least, until we come up with something cooler." He added, as his brain congratulated him on actually remembering something from biology.

"Let’s do it! Do you know how to do flips?”

Did he know how to do flips? Well, he did flips into the pool a lot. And once or twice he'd managed to do that cool Matrix-y wall-flip thingy (though that had cause him some trouble to learn, back when he was 12). "Yeah, I think." He nodded in agreement.

He was pretty psyched. He could now go from Nerf warrior to ninja Nerf warrior. It would be epic.

“Well, girls don’t have a Y chromosomes… Yeah, I’ll brainstorm on some cool names.” It was something very simple from biology, but he was almost failing the class. Well not almost failing, he was getting a C in it… He just didn’t understand most of it, or well any of it.

“Well lets go back onto the grass, just so you don’t break, or kill yourself doing flips up on the bleachers.” Ryder walked down the bleachers, looking behind him to make sure Peyton was following. Once on the grass, and far enough away from the bleachers Ryder looked at Peyton and nodded. “Alright, can I see what you can do?” If he could do any sort of flip… Ryder didn’t doubt the boy, he just didn’t know.

Peyton followed Ryder onto the grass, but was slightly confused by the dude's request. "Like... right here? I dunno, I mean, I usually use a wall or-" Nope. Never admit defeat. "Yeah, ok." He nodded, both to himself and his new tutor.

And with that (stupid) idea, he decided to try it from flat ground. Why the hell not, right? He'd been battered enough from his active childhood, his body could take a few more cuts and bruises. But he was kinda surprised when he actually managed to land his flip. Or, okay, not land, but not fall on his head - it was more like rolling out of a fall, which was second nature, really. It would've been better if he'd been a little higher up to start with, or had a running start, he would've managed to get back to his feet again within the flip, instead of landing and then getting back on his feet.

"I can do cartwheels, too. And roundoffs. The whole running part makes me a lot better at flippy things and stuff. Wait - let me try again, I can do this cool thing-" And before he even got a response, he took off and launched into a no-hands cartwheel (that had taken some perfecting). A grin lit on his face once he'd landed - because, fuck yeah, he did it! - and he did another run back toward Ryder, this time with a flip that he actually landed. "Not as cool as bleachers and stuff, but pretty damn awesome if I do say so myself."
