A Time to Study, A Time to.... Not [Sawyer]

Emrys was not generally one to spend much time in the student lounge. Much of the time it was too crowded or loud, but today he had come upon it at just the right time, it seemed. Only a few other students were there, talking with each other not too loudly, considering, or studying. Apparently it was early enough in the day that students were either in class, or still getting ready for class.

He had come earlier than usual to work out, mostly because he'd had a schedule change at the coffee shop, and therefore wouldn't have time to work out later. So, he'd come early, had his time at the gym, and had set off for a relatively quiet place to do some studying. Originally he'd been thinking somewhere outside, but when he'd discovered the student lounge to be pretty low key, he'd opted for that.

He glanced up from his book surveying the room briefly. A couple more students had filtered in while he had been absorbed by his book, which of course raised the volume of the room slightly. All the same, he still felt as if he could continue to focus, so he again lowered his attention to his book, nudging his mind to focus as he did so.

Sawyer was stupid bored, having actually finished her final project earlier. She decided to hit the student lounge, maybe hustle some freshmen suckers at pool.

Who she saw changed her mind about pool. Emrys Waterson, her stupid looking (see: bitter sarcasm) schoolmate was lounging with a book and wherever stupid looking Emrys Waterson was with a book, Sawyer was going to bother him. How could she not? He was so stupid looking.

Sneaking up on him, Sawyer jumped close to him, knocking the chair he was sitting on. "You know you're too pretty to bury yourself in books, Em. That face needs some sunshine." Sawyer scratched at his chin and purred.

Emrys was engrossed in his book, and therefore not paying any particular attention to what might be going on around him. Therefore, when someone--he wasn't sure if friend or foe at that point--knocked into the chair he was sitting on and invaded his personal bubble, he started, sucking in a breath as he did.

Sawyer. He let the breath out and told his heartbeat to slow back down. That girl... He was sure she was very sweet, but... she also had a very definite mischievous streak, it seemed. Not that it was necessarily bad... but he was sure it could get her into trouble at some point.

He leaned away as she scratched at his chin, trying to be as polite about it as possible of course. He offered a faint, and more than a little awkward, smile. "Thank you, Sawyer," he said. "You look very nice today as well," he offered in return. "I hope your studies are going well?" He was not sure exactly what else to say in that instance, but returned compliments and inquiries into studies or work never went amiss, in his experience.

Sawyer was most definitely not sweet. In fact, she was pretty sure everything about her oozed sour whiskey and tequila. The very fact that she was bothering one of the most chill boy in practically the entire school was proof enough that she was anything but sweet.

Not letting him moving away from her offend her, Sawyer simply jumped into the seat next to Emrys and eyed the book, sidling up close to him. Personal space? It wasn't in Sawyer's vocabulary.

His empty compliment made the voice mimic release a girlish giggle before flipping her hair over her shoulders. "Oh Emrys. You say the sweetest things." She simpered. Dropping the act quickly at the mention of studies, Sawyer rolled her eyes and turned her nose up. "Dude, come on. Just because finals are coming up, doesn't mean we need to talk about it." She stuck her tongue out and pointed to the book.

"What are you reading?" She asked.

As Emrys regathered his startled wits, he found himself settling back down into his more comfortable, less awkward self. The one he always had to settle into when someone like Sawyer came along. In these instances, one simply had to be comfortable with just about anything, and eventually anyone intentionally teasing would get bored...

He offered a smile, this one more steady, as Sawyer started talking again. He flipped his book so the cover could be seen, revealing a thick science book for one of his classes. "Not the most interesting read, but it has its moments." He shrugged. Really, he was looking forward to finishing up at Hammel this year and moving on to college. Learning about his power was great, but learning about what he wanted to do as a career would be even better.

"What are you planning to do this summer?" he inquired, still managing to keep a calm and collected exterior, despite the invasion of his personal space. He didn't consider himself paranoid about his bubble, but neither was he the most comfortable with forms of physical affection from people he didn't know so well, and particularly from girls he didn't consider a close friend.

Sawyer chuckled lightly at his book introduction. "I don't know what's worse. People who read for school or people who read for pleasure. Or people who actually find pleasure in reading for school." She shook her head slightly and patted his knee condescendingly.

Talk of summer immediately got her thinking of driving up to the nearest beach and getting baked. Probably with Lucy or maybe Dani. Either way, she was going to get baked in all ways possible.

"Getting out of here for a bit that's for sure." She nodded, leaning back into the couch. "You going back home?" She asked, a yawn suddenly forcing itself out of her.

"Nothing wrong with finding pleasure in things you must do." Emyrs smiled, faintly amused at her words despite her invasion of his space. Really, he didn't quite understand why some students disliked, or at least complained about, so many of their studies, as if it were some forbidden thing to actually enjoy something that was improving you as a person. He was sure they had their reasons, though, of course... Perhaps they simply had more difficulty learning. It was hard to enjoy something that one was not good at.

As Sawyer leaned back on the couch, he scooted slightly to give himself an inch or two of space, nodding to her declaration of summer intentions as he did, in hopes of not drawing attention to his attempt at space. "Where do you intend to go?" he inquired.

Going back home... "No, I won't be going back home. At least not long-term." He gave a shrug. "I work up here and have an apartment, so I'd only spend a few days to visit." His mind turned to his sister. She might be going back for the summer, and he dreaded that. Not only all the dangers of traveling, but also the environment... He just didn't think it would be the best thing for her. But, she was only fourteen, so she couldn't really do much else.

"Okay." Sawyer elongated the two syllable word. She had no patience with anything to do with education she knew she didn't need to succeed in life. Especially with what she had already planned to do for the rest of her life.

Although she did seem to forget there were people like Emrys who actually liked studying. Why, she didn't know but like how she expected people to accept her as who she was, she supposed she should accept people like Emrys as who they were.

Wow, she needed to stop hanging out with people who brought about her conscience more. She was starting to sound like a real person.

Sawyer was thick-skinned enough that as obvious as it was, she didn't really notice it when Emrys moved away from her. She was too busy staring at the ceiling and letting her hair fall to the back of the couch, playing with it as the sun shone through the window, catching bits of her hair and making it look shiny.

"The beach probably. Or maybe I could go on a road trip. Maybe." She nodded distractedly before listening to Emrys speak. Damn that voice though. She could sleep listening to it.

"So you're staying here in PR? Huh..." Sawyer smirked to herself. There was no way she would stop messing him up at every chance she got then. The poor boy wouldn't even see it coming.

"Will you be working the whole summer? I could probably save you a seat in the car if you're up for a road trip." She shamelessly invited the boy, not even caring that they weren't even friends.

As Sawyer seemed to be staying for a while, Emrys went ahead and closed his book, deciding he likely was not going to get much more studying done while he was there. Ah well, perhaps it was for the best, and it wasn't as if he was in major need of studying either, he supposed. There were only a few sections that he needed to cover once or twice more.

He studied Sawyer as she played with her hair and mused over possibilities for the summer. Despite her penchant for being a tease, he couldn't help but notice she was pretty. Really, someone would have had to be blind not to notice, but of course Emrys was not the type to say anything about noticing. So instead, he simply focused on what she'd asked, smiling a bit as he answered.

"Yes, I will be working the whole summer... Thank you for the invitation, though." Of course, even if he hadn't been working, he probably wouldn't have accepted the invite. He didn't know Sawyer nearly well enough to take her up on something of that sort. Really, he hoped that she wouldn't one day invite the wrong guy, and end up regretting it later... He gave a mental sigh as he nudged his mind away from its line of worrying. He and Sawyer might not have been "friends" in the traditional sense, but he didn't consider her an enemy or rival either. Therefore, she was automatically admitted into the list of people he worried about.

"Aww shucks. That's too bad. What ever will I do on those long cold lonely nights?" She chuckled, still pretty much unaware of her surroundings, while still playing with her hair. She liked her hair, despite having a weird hairline.

She stole a glance at Emrys, wondering why a guy who looked like him wasn't going about being cool, instead of being such a nice homey person. What were they called again? Introverts? He needed to mix with people, be a lot more outgoing. He could not waste his time burying his head in those thick books and letting his life pass him by.

Clearing her throat, Sawyer straightened up and turned her body and slid right back against the arm of the couch, pulling her legs up. "Don't you do anything else besides reading?"

"I'm sure you'll have plenty to keep you occupied." Emrys smiled, chuckling a little. "Would you go with your family or with other friends?" He very much hoped she would say family... otherwise it could be dangerous for her. A bunch of teenagers going on a road trip? Definitely not the most wise choice.

"Of course I do more than read," he mused. "I go to the gym as well... and to work..." He smiled. Sure, he wasn't one to socialize a whole lot, but he wasn't a recluse either. He had his workout buddies, as well as people he had coffee with after work some days. Definitely not the sort of social life a lot of people led, but it satisfied him. He'd never been one to party or run around with friends all day.

"What do you enjoy doing?" he inquired in return. Well, perhaps not 'in return" exactly, but he preferred to allow others to talk. Especially if they were more outgoing than he and didn't mind doing the talking.

"Family. For sure." Sawyer responded, not even bothering to explain that all her family were right here in school.

"Yeah, that's obvious." The voice mimic didn't even try to hide her gaze, looking at him like a piece of meat she wanted to devour. She did eventually look back up to his face which was still stupid-looking. Damn handsomely stupid-looking.

She had to stare a bit at Emrys before responding to his question. "Not much." She responded, never having to think much about it until now. She did whatever she felt like doing. And she enjoyed most of what she did because of that.

Sawyer could have answered with her actual passion; DJing, but she didn't. She didn't know why. She supposed it was one of those things that usually spoke for itself. She supposed she could have answered with gymnastics or swimming...anything really. She reckoned she had just forgotten how to speak to people who didn't already know her.

"Uh...you hungry? I kinda feel hungry. Wanna get something to eat?"

Emrys briefly wondered if his comment about working out had sounded like bragging. He hadn't meant it to, of course, and with the way Sawyer eyed him after he said it, he couldn't help but wonder if she'd taken it as some brand of bragging. Ah well...

He wasn't quite sure what to make of her noncommittal answer of "not much" in reference to what she enjoyed doing. Either she was avoiding the question, which he had little idea why she would be doing, or she enjoyed too many things to list... Because everyone enjoyed something, right? Ah well... He saw no reason to push the issue at the moment, especially as she had already moved on to another subject.

"I could eat," he admitted, shifting to sit up a little, so he wasn't leaning against the back of the couch as much. "You thinking cafeteria or elsewhere?" Really, he didn't mind much, though he couldn't say he was a huge fan of the cafeteria's meals. Sure, they weren't the worst, but they didn't beat a good home meal, even if that home meal was simply ramen noodles, or something equally easy to make.

It actually hadn't, contrary to Emrys' belief. Sawyer was being salacious and so not covering her tracks at all. There was no denying that she thought he was attractive but really, she should have had more tact than that.

Emrys agreeing moved Sawyer off the couch, stretching as she did so purely because she could never stay still for too long without feeling some ache in her body.

"Elsewhere please. This place is kind of depressing to eat in. No matter how tasty the food is." Sawyer shook her head and walked out of the student lounge, presumptuous in Emrys actually following.

"There's a cart downtown that has amazing sauerkraut. Even the mustard is homemade." Sawyer hummed her appreciation for the food, already salivating at the thought. "Unless you wanna go elsewhere. Whatever, food is food."

Emrys smiled at Sawyer's comment about the cafeteria. He had to agree that it wasn't the most pleasant place to eat a meal... He strode after her as she exited the lounge, tucking his book under his arm as he did.

He began reviewing possible places to eat in his mind, having a little difficulty since he didn't know what sorts of places Sawyer liked. However, he was saved the trouble a moment or two later, as she suggested a downtown cart. He was fairly certain he hadn't seen the place, which wasn't surprising, since he rarely deviated from his usual path between the coffee shop and his apartment, or his apartment and the school.

"That sounds fine," he said with a nod. "Never really had sauerkraut before, but homemade mustard must be good." He gave a faint grin. Really, aside from the cafeteria, he didn't have a whole lot of experience with anything less than... well, more high end food that wasn't bought from downtown carts. Not by his choice of course-- it was simply what he'd grown up with, and he hadn't really seen a reason to try and change it since. He made his own food now that he didn't live at the school, which he held to almost as high a standard as that at home.
