Lost and Found (Mathis)

[Akira Koizumi]

Akira took off his t-shirt and stuck it in his locker. He walked out of the locker room in his swim trunks. He did a quick warm up and some stretches before he got into the pool. Rather than using the little ladder to get into the pool, Akira jumped right in. He created a loud splash.

He surfaced. He pushed back his wet hair away from his face. Ah, that’s what he needed. The cool water plus the physical activity plus the smell of chlorine equal relaxation.

Akira floated on his back for a few moments. He started to do the back stroke.

Mathis liked to spend time in the school's pool, he really did. But ever since he picked up a few extra clubs he really didn't have the time to devote to swimming the way he would have really liked. Granted he found time for a lot of other useless things, but swimming just never happened to be one of them. He'd like it to be, though, so maybe one of these days he'd actually carve out some time to devote to swimming. Maybe this summer, actually.

However that wasn't the reason Mathis was currently running to the gymnasium like he was on fire. No, that was because of the sketchbook clasped tightly in one of his hands. The mimic has found it in one of his classrooms earlier that day and had spent most of his remaining time running frantically from area to area until he realized he could just sniff it to get a clue. Once he did that he could smell faint traces of chlorine, which meant whoever handled it a lot probably spent a lot of time at the pool- hence his current rush.

He neared the doors to the pool and quickly slowed down, just in case the owner wasn't there and he looked like a crazy fool for bursting in without reason. Mathis huffed once before shoving open the doors, glancing around before becoming instantly draw to the figure doing the backstroke.

"Hey! Heeeey! Didja lose a sketchbook 'round this morning? 'Cause I picked one up and I thought you might be this Akira fella who owns it. If not do y'know where abouts I can find him?" he called out in his usual fast paced, rambling version of a Texan draw. While speaking he raised the sketchbook and waved it about as proof for what he was talking about in regards to the sketchbook mentioned.

Akira stopped swimming when a frantic voice spoke to him. He looked over to whom the voice belongs to. Akira saw a boy waving a sketchbook about. He swam over to the edge of the pool. The sketchbook looked familiar to him.

“I’m Akira,” he said as he pulled himself out of the pool.

Akira left puddle footprints behind as he went to a white plastic chair for a towel. He dried himself off a little.

“Did I really forgot my sketchbook? That would explain why my backpack felt lighter.” Akira chuckled and ran a hand through his wet hair.

Mathis grinned as the male climbed out of the pool. It was always nice to know that you had guess something right. Even if it was mostly a guess based on the fact he'd sniffed the guys notebook. Which sounded a lot creepier than how he'd meant it to.

"Good! Glad I found you then! I'm Mathis, this is yours!" His voice was a verifiable chirp as he held out the notebook for the still wet male to take.

"Yeh you forgot it. But you should bring it with you too the pool more! Makes it a whole ton easier to find you." This he pointed out while still holding out the notebook. Didn't the guy want it? After he'd spent all afternoon chasing down the owner? Mathis frowned some at the thought and wiggled the notebook again. "You want it?"

“Of course I want it. It’s mine.” Akira grabbed his sketchbook from Mathis. He flipped through the pages. It didn’t look like any one ripped out any of the pages. “Arigato,” Akira nodded his head a little in thanks.

Then it dawned of him what Mathis said. “But you should bring it with you too the pool more! Makes it a whole ton easier to find you.”

“Why would I bring my sketchbook to the pool? I come here to swim, not to draw. And how did you know I was at the pool?”

Mathis huffed slightly when the notebook was pulled from his hand, but waited peacefully until the other apologized. As he stood, though, he became aware of pangs of hunger building in his stomach from his earlier use of power. Bloodhound's noses may be useful and all, but maybe he should have just stuck with regular old detective work. The mimic begun looking around the room as slyly as possible to try and locate a food source.

Smoky blue eyes tilted some as he turned back to smile at Akira, scratching at the back of his neck nervously. "Ah... Well y'see... I kinda... Sniffed it? Smelled like a pool. I just ran here in hopes you'd swim a lot."

“Sniffed it?” Akira titled his head to the right. He scrunched his face in confusion. He brought his sketchbook to his nose. All that he could smell was a strong smell of chlorine from the pool behind him and a faint smell of the paper.

Beads of water rolled down Akira. He was getting a little chilled. He should either go be into the pool or go put some clothes on. “Like I said thanks for bring it to me.” He looked back to the pool and then to Mathis. “Want to go for a swim?”

Mathis grinned as the other sniffed his own notebook and casually tapped his nose with a finger. "I gotta dog's nose temporarily. Makes life a load easier. But now I'm hungry." He blurted out in his usual quick fire fashion and nodded once. His blue eyes flicked over to the water slowly stilling behind Akira and grinned even more.

"No problem. I ain't wantin' you to be missin' it or nothin'. His voice continued in it's usual chirp. At the offer to go in the pool, though, Mathis was instantly bouncing on his feet despite the lethargic feeling in his body. "Sure! Let me just.." He paused, looking around once more as he tried to figure out what to change into until he remembered- gym locker. "Let me go change real fast and then we can swim. Go 'head and start without me!" He gave the other a casual wave before jogging into the locker room.

Akira tossed his sketchbook and towel on a chair. He went to low diving board and jumped in. Akira swam out to the middle of the pool. He floated on his back while he waited for Mathis.

Mathis changed quickly and quietly in the gym locker room, shimmying out of his clothes and sliding trunks on with practiced ease. He grabbed a towel from the locker as well before he practically bounced back to the pool. "Hey! Sorry 'bout the wait!" Chirping gently in his cheerful voice, Mathis continued his bounce all the way to the low diving board. Climbing up to the top he walked out, bouncing at the end before just doing a cannonball into the pool.

Akira watched Mathis walk out on the diving board. Mathis cannonballed into the pool. Akira smiled and laughed. He swam over the edge of the pool and pulled himself out. He went to the diving board again. He dived gracefully into the pool. Akira came up and used his hands to push his hair back.

Akira swam over to the other male. “So, I have a question.” Akira grabbed onto the edge of the pool. “You said that temporarily had a dog’s nose. What did you mean by that?”

Akira had always been fascinated by all the different powers and abilities found at Hammel. He loves learning about other people’s abilities. And Akira was curious about Mathis’.

Mathis surfaced rather quickly after his impromptu cannonball, pushing water from his face before he opened his eyes. He casually scanned the pool before giving Akira a wide grin, swimming away from the dive board zone when he noticed the other was climbing out. It only took a few moments for him to hang against a wall and look up at Akira with his signature wide grin.

As his new friend executed the dive, Mathis pushed away from the wall to give a round of loud claps that echoed off the walls. His grin didn’t fade even as Akira swam up with curiosity written all over his face. ”Oh! Well I’ma animal mimic, so I can take traits of other animals. Bloodhound’s nose, elephant’s strength, bat’s hearing… Those sortsa things.”

“Waa~ Cool.” Akira smiled brightly at Mathis. So many different abilities all at one location.

“I have ink manipulation. I can control ink.” Akira showed Mathis the tattoo on the inside of his left wrist. “Ani-san gave this to me. He and I have the same ability.”

Akira pushed off of the side of the pool. He floated on his back and let the water take him where it pleased. It was nice to have someone to swim with.

Mathis quickly mimicked the bright smile Akira was giving him. It was nice when someone thought his ability was cool, especially considering the fact he didn't think his ability was all that amazing.

His thoughts were almost confirmed when he discovered Akira's power. Blue eyes widened suddenly and he reached out to grab the other's wrist, studying the ink intently before grinning at Akira. "That's so awesome! Me and ma brother have different abilities." A solemn nod before Mathis grinned some. "So what else can y'do with your ability?"

There was a pause before Mathis ducked underwater and pushes off the pool wall to dart at Akira, twisting his body suddenly so that his head bobbed out of the water right beside his new friend. "So, whatcha doin' here?"

Akira smiled at Mathis when he popped his head above the water. “I can move ink that is on and off paper. It’s pretty cool. If you want I can show you.”

Akira ducked under the water and then came back up. He treaded the water. “I like swimming. I’m on the swim team too.” He paused for a moment before he came up with a question.

“You said that your brother has different power than you, what is it?”
