The BasicsName: Anjali Diya Kedar
Nicknames: Vayu, by her parents
Age: 20 (March 14, 1994)
Orientation: Homosexual (closeted)
Desired Rank/Job: College Student
Powers: Aerokinesis. Anjali is able to control wind, either pulling it into a strong gust or swirling it into small dust devils. She spent a lot of time in her youth working on her aerokinesis and has a decent grip on her power, but not without cost. Once she creates the wind she can’t always calm it back down. For her it’s easier making the force than stopping it. In addition, using her power too much can cause some serious muscle weakness. If her emotions get out of control, so does her wind. Becoming too angry, happy or depressed can trigger her aerokinesis and start small gusts of wind around her. It’s this reason that she stays so centered all the time, often meditating or praying, doing yoga and drinking lots of tea. Anjali is a zen person, often able to keep a level head. She can also become very lethargic with overuse of her power. After a long practice session it’s not unheard of for her to take three to four hour naps, her mind and body needing to catch up from exerting so much force.

She was twelve, nearly thirteen, and it was the day she told her parents that something wasn’t quite right. She’d noticed the change in the wind, and at first she thought it was a coincidence that the wind shifted around her the way she wanted it to. A lucky guess. Her parents, her mother especially, took this news of her being meta as a blessing. They didn’t believe at first, but being somewhat religious people they were sure it was real, and a sign they their child had been chosen by a deity for greatness.
“Who?” The name was unfamiliar, but her mother seemed pleased as she went to the bookcase and pulled out an old volume. It had the stories of all the Hindu deity’s, Vayu being one of them.
“The Lord of the winds.” She had explained. That afternoon had been one she would remember always. Her parents had shown her nothing but love and kindness throughout her entire life, and it showed in the tender hearted young woman. The Kedar’s had strong morals and the family did everything together. They often traveled back to India for weddings and visits with family. The country was magical to Anjali, so different from the world she knew, but it always felt like home. The day the Hammel recruiter arrived, nearly a week after Anjali noticed her new ability to control wind, she feared she would never see her family again, or India. How would she survive so far from the people she loved? Who would she confide in if not her brother? Her parents were reluctant to let her go, afraid of what might happen to their youngest child and only daughter if she were to go nearly eight hours away. Would she be safe? They were assured she would be, but it took several days to convince the Kedar family to let their baby go. Equipped with a new cell phone and a laptop that had Skype, and instructions to use it daily, She was off to school.
Anjali Skyped with her parents daily, and even from afar they were doting and strict with both Anjali and her older brother Nikhil. Nik could get away with anything. He was the oldest and a boy, and though he was held to high standards, it was overlooked when he made stupid mistakes, which was often. It was his silly attitude and inability to take anything seriously that made Anjali love her brother so much. The two were close in age at only sixteen months apart, and had done everything together as children. He was still the first person she called when anything was wrong, and the only person who knew her deepest secret. The day the Hammel recruiter arrived, nearly a week after Anjali noticed her new ability to control wind, she feared she would never see her family again, or India. It was when she was at Hammel that she knew something was off. She liked boys, but not in the traditional sense. This, of course, pleased her mother who was very against her dating until she was mature enough for marriage. Anjali’s parents expected her to meet a good Indian boy to marry, and she would need to stay pure for him. But boys never registered on her radar as anything other than friends. Girls, though.. girls made her blush. The right conversation could make her heart race and the wind pick up around her. It took years to realize she preferred the gentler sex, but she’d never acted on it. Not that she was necessarily ashamed of being with a girl, but the thought of destroying her parents vision of her future.. that was something she couldn’t handle. They would be so ashamed, so disappointed, especially when they considered her to be such a miracle; their little Vaya. It was this secret that kept her in Vermont for college instead of heading back down to her native New Jersey. She needed time to figure out who she was before she threw it all away for her parents. What About You?Name: Pam
