Volunteering

[Dr. Nik Kenjutsushi]

Nik didn't often have to call on the dorms at night, especially outside of cold and flu season. However, there was something that she had been meaning to get done, and since her shift began just after curfew, so it was that she walked into the dorm common room at 8:45 with a small box of treats carefully cradled in her arms.

There had been some notice for quite some time among the faculty that the Head of Housing was punishing a variety of infractions by having the perpetrators work for the school in some way. Most of the time, the work seemed to be landscaping or janitorial based, but thus far, no one had been sent to the Infirmary in particular. The doctor thought it best to correct that, and what better way than volunteering in person? Besides, she'd never said more than a word or three in passing to the older woman, and they didn't see each other often. It would definitely be polite to make a more meaningful connection.

Well, more meaningful than mere acquaintanceship. They were coworkers, after all.

Following the sign to the Head of Housing's apartment, Nakia knocked on the door with a pale hand and waited patiently. She had time - no need to rush. The bao provided by her husband for this meeting had already been here all day in the refrigerator, and this type with its fresh fruit could be served warm or cold (she preferred cold).

Doris had quite a long talk with a student. The girl was having boy and friend troubles. It was quite the complicated situation. It was starting to get late and Doris sent the student to her dorm. If need be they would talk again.

The older woman sat down in front of her computer. She hadn’t checked today’s emails. Doris slowly navigated her way through the computer to her emails. It wasn’t long before a knock rapped on the door.

“Coming,” Doris called out as she stood up. She went to the door thinking it was another student coming to see her. Upon opening the door Doris found it was not a student. A pale woman stood there with some food in her hands. If Doris was placing the woman in the correct place, she was one of the doctors. “Hello, come in.” Doris moved aside and gestured the other woman in. “Make yourself comfortable.”

"Thank you very much." Nik came inside, careful not to bump the head of housing or the door to her apartment. Slipping off her shoes and tucking them up against the wall was old habit, and the box of treats was deposited on the coffee table.

"I'm sorry to come by so late; am I keeping you up?" Normally, calling around after eight o'clock was a hospitality faux pas, but it was likely that the older woman would be up for a little while, and it wasn't quite late enough where everyone in the dorms was in bed. Still, it was polite to at least ask, even if the answer was no.

Doris closed the door behind her guest. “Not at all. I had a student stop by for a visit.” Doris didn’t mind at all. She likes guests coming to visit her. She did like her guest coming for just a visit not for a problem. Either way the older woman liked the company.

“Would like something to drink?” Doris was already making her way to the kitchen before Nik answered. She fussed around the kitchen. “What brings you here?”
