Sean put forth no resistance to the other man’s movements; thus, when he was tugged closer and then turned around, he found himself staring into Josh’s clear blue eyes, magnified by his glasses as they always were so close. He could see reflected in those eyes Josh’s determination, his worry, his caring, his affection. And he was grateful for all of those.
Unfortunately, he didn’t think that Josh understood; not for want of trying, but because he didn’t know what it was that Sean had in him, or didn’t have in the absence of such a large, immutable part of himself.
He set the pen and paper down, which allowed him to have use of his hands again. He snaked one arm around Josh’s shoulders to return the embrace, and the other dangled, prepared to be used for emphasis. “Of course I’ll cope,” he started, because he didn’t want the other man to think he would try anything; it was bad enough that Josh had thought, somehow – if he truly believed that Sean was the strongest person he knew than this was baffling – that he would commit suicide over less than this. “That doesn’t make it easy, and I’ll be miserable. And I’ll flounder, because I do use it for everything.”
Josh’s insistence had succeeded in bringing about some of his coherence, for which the younger man was to be lauded.
“But this isn’t the power going out.” He smiled sadly at that and brought his other hand to his temple, tapping lightly. “This goes to the core, and I need you to accept that. I don’t think that I’m only a telepath, but to take it away is to unravel me.”
It was the best explanation he could give without beginning to talk about how touching Josh was like touching a cardboard cutout. He didn’t think that would go over well.
