Caught In The Rain
How many months had it been since he started his new life at college? Cameron was almost unsure. It had been a bit of a whirlwind of classes and people for awhile. All this time he was making friends and making plans for his bright future. He was truly excited by all this. It was an adventure after all, and Cam was always up for anything new and exciting. Sure, he missed all his friends back at Hammel, but he knew he couldn't dwell on it. Plus, he had been texting and talking to all of them almost everyday. Some more than others of course.
One in particular, he felt may have been avoiding him. Someone that definitely had something going on but none of Cam's other friends could tell him what it was. Salem had been quiet on him for awhile. Answering text with one or two words, only calling back when he knew Cam was asleep and leaving short messages. That wasn't like the sweet blonde illusionist at all. There wasn't much Cam could do about it really, and he chalked it up to his friend just being a senior and being busy. Fall was coming on strong and he knew he'd see the younger man soon enough. Then he could find out what was going on.
During his free time, Cam liked to escape the confines of his dorm and search for parties or any kind of event, just to take his mind off things. November had just rolled around, and the past month had been a bit rough with classes and work just pilling up, so he decided a good party was needed. He was after all, a very social creature. It didn't take him long to track down a noisy party going on not to far away, so he slipped in and made himself cozy. While he was chatting with some random person, his phone vibrated and he excused himself. He wasn't sure if it was ringing or just a text, so he went where it was quieter and had a bit more light.
Not that he couldn't have handled the light situation himself, but he figured it was more polite to the other party goers. Pulling his phone out, he noticed it was text. A simply one at that, from Salem. All it said was, "I miss you, and I wish you were here." Cam was happy that it wasn't a short little text, but worried at the same time. Salem had not once told him he missed him since he left, and the wishing Cam was there part just made it seem like the boy needed his friend. He sent a text back quickly, saying the same thing and asking if Salem was alright. There was no reply.
A few days went by with still no reply, not with lack of Cam trying to get his attention. Then a few day's after Salem's birthday, Cam decided to give the boy a call. It wasn't that he had forgotten his birthday, no, he just had been busy. When he did call, he was surprised to hear Salem actually answer. "Hey Sa, Happy late Birthday!" For a moment, Salem was quiet, except for a little noise in the background. "Thanks Cam.." He sounded happy, sad, and like he may be getting a cold. "You alright Salem?" Cam pulled his umbrella out as he made his way out of class, it was pouring outside.
"Yeah, just uh..I got stuck in the rain." He attempted a little chuckle. "I uh...got locked out..or the doors stuck, I'm not sure." Cam had to chuckle at the thought. "Hey, as long as you're alright that's what matters. You tried banging on the door yet? Wait, is it raining there too?" The light manipulator pulled the umbrella further over him as he walked, attempting to drown out the noise so he could hear the other. "Yeah, it's a pouring pretty bad. Nah, not gonna bang. Plus, I think someone is coming to let me in now." Salem's voice seemed to perk up a bit. A very happy tone that Cam had missed and hadn't heard in a long time. "There's my Salem." He thought.
"Oh really?" He chuckled. "Who's your knight in shining armor then? Or Princess?" Cam was curious who was saving him, but the line cut out. "Salem? You there?" Trying desperately, he shook the phone a little and barely heard the little cough from in front of him. As his eyes traveled up, he saw a short, familiar figure standing on the steps to his dorm. Salem, was soaking wet, his hair flat on his head, his clothes sticking to his slightly skinner than normal frame. There were no words exchanged, just a spark. A spark that was always there. Cam lit up at the site of him and the umbrella fell to the ground.
Salem ran towards him and flung his arms around the other blonde's shoulders and pressed their lips together. Neither of them seeming to notice the heavy rain falling on them, or the few people around staring. Cam cupped Salem's face in his hands and gently pulled away, not really wanting to, but only because Salem was crying. Salem went on to quickly tell him all the things he'd been going through, every horrible thing he'd done. Cam just listened, still gently holding his face and ignoring the rain. "And I just couldn't stand to be without you another minute." Salem whimpered, ending his long stream of thought.
Cam nodded slowly. "Then you wont ever have to be again Sa." He brushed a strained of wet hair out of Salem's face so he could see those blue eyes and the little sparkle of light behind them. "Don't promise me something you can't give Cam.." Salem choked a bit. "I'm not, I'm stating a fact." Cam wasn't going to let Salem protest again, so he pulled him in for another kiss. This one far more passionate than the last. "Now, let's get up to my room and get you dried off." Cam whispered in his ear after breaking the kiss. "Alright." Salem whispered back as they slowly walked out of the rain.
