Odion laughed. Jared had the type of charm that could convince a mother to hand you her child’s candy with a smile on her face. He was just as quick as any pickpocket should be, but he was a people person, and this always seemed to work out in his favor. He made the band of thieves not seem so serious when they were together, like they could still be human. Like they could still be kids… Odion mostly remembered being annoyed with Jared, but he couldn’t help but look back fondly on some of the more ridiculous things they had all done together.
“I would show you, but there’s male nudity involving certain individuals you probably don’t want to see naked,” Odion said with a smirk. There was him, of course, but there was also Jared, which Lani had probably seen enough of to last a lifetime. Jared wasn’t shy at all, there were no barriers with the bloke. And then there was Rhett, who Odion doubted Lani would want to see in any form, especially naked. “This was when we were around fifteen or so,” Odion started, the joy of the memory giving him that spark he would need to move into the future. “It was hardly the first time we had had too much to drink, but it had definitely been too much.” And from there, Odion went on to explain how Jared had convinced and or dared Odion and Rhett to jump into the fountain naked with him to see the reaction of others. Now that Odion thought about it, he was very glad cellphones hadn’t been so popular when this happened.
Sighing, it was easy to forget why they were here right now in the first place. Odion had so many good memories, and even talking about Rhett wasn’t so bad anymore. Yes there was a scar and yes it was ugly, but it was only a part of who he was, it wasn’t the only part of him. And the truth was, they were all scared, every last one of them. From him who was abandoned as an infant, to Jared who left home not because he didn’t have a choice, but because he chose to no longer be abused. And no one chose to have cancer. Odion peered into Lani’s eyes, knowing that that had only been a momentary distraction. He took a deep breath, putting his free hand over the two of theirs pressed together. “I believe I’m ready to continue,” he implored.
