One of Seven (Lukas and Samuel)

[Father Stanley Cupper]

Father Cupper was not infallible by any stretch of the imagination, and he'd be the first to admit that to anyone who'd ask. One of his many failings, and the one more obvious to the world than Pinocchio's lies, was an appetite that led to his... padded figure. One of the many contributors to this particular issue, was his love of all things chocolate or toffee, which was the current reason he was in the little sweet shop, swearing that most of it was going to go to the little bowls of nibblings he liked leaving around the church for wee ones, but at the same time honest enough to know he was going to savor a good deal of his purchase personally. Thus it was, with a slightly rueful look, he browsed the little jars with a basket in one arm, aiming to select for guests before himself, earning a goodly collection of hard toffees.

Lukas was not actually a fan of sweet things. He didn't go out of his way to visit a sweet shop and he didn't eat cake on his birthday. What he did do, though, was point out the fact there was a sweet shop to the fourteen year old boy walking along side him. Lukas had taken the small boy out for some time away from the craziness of the house, with Alyssa taking the final warmth of summer as an excuse to clean things. From which everyone would need a break eventually.

The tracker carried a bag of books he'd bought for Samuel, barely nodding to the young meta beside him as he headed inside the sweet shop. "Make sure to pick some up some for Alyssa too." Not that he was planning to leave Samuel alone to pick out the treats. Lukas walked over to the counter and smiled some when he noticed a familiarly shaped man. "Father Cupper? Is that you?"

Samuel couldn't say he was *not* used to people buying him things-- that was sort've part of the job description of being a foster kid after all. But that didn't mean he did not still feel weird when people he'd met only recently bought him things. Foster family or not. However, in no universe was he going to say no to someone buying him new books. Sure, they'd also gotten some things for his room, which he had been vague and shrug-ish about, but when it came to his video game books...

And now sweets. He edged into the shop, glancing around and nodding in acknowledgement of Lukas' comment about picking some up for Alyssa. If anything, the comment made him feel more comfortable about picking out something for Lukas to buy. He was just looking over the saltwater taffy collection when he heard Lukas addressing someone, and of course curiously turned to see who it was.

The portly yet personable priest gave a small start at being addressed and turned to look at the speaker, "Ah... brother... Luke, isn't it?" He says, hoping he got the name right, "You were in the sermon Sunday, as I recall..." he offers the man a hand to shake, "Sorry if thats wrong, takes me a while to remember names."

Lukas didn't mind going out and shopping for his foster kids. In fact he enjoyed the whole process of shopping and trying to get the best deal. Of course he would deny the fact if anyone asked, but it didn't mean he enjoyed coming home with bags of things any less.

The teacher smiled some - if you could call the quirking of his lips a smile - at the portly priest and took the offered hand, nodding his head ever so slightly. "Lukas, actually. But you are free to call me Luke." As he took his head back he nodded slightly to where Samuel was standing in front of the taffy. "That is Samuel. He was with me Sunday." After a few moments pause, Lukas glanced at the sweets in front of Cupper. "I see you've found Marisol's without too much problem. Are you liking the rest of our town as much?"

Ahh, the priest from Sunday. He'd seemed nice. Not as nice as the priests from his "real" family's church, but he was well aware some of that was likely bias. Well aware, but not particularly caring that he was biased either. His church had been the best, even if he was biased about the priests.

All the same, Samuel offered a slight wave and a restrained smile when Lukas nodded to him. Respect properly observed, he turned back to the taffy, picking some out before moving on to inspect candies closer to Lukas and the priest. Just because he didn't like socializing, didn't mean he didn't like to eavesdrop. People talked about interesting things sometimes when they didn't know others were listening. Not that he was trying to cover up the fact he was listening. It didn't seem particularly necessary in this instance.

"I swear this isn't just for me." Cupper says, a slight blush hitting his cheeks and turning him into the spitting image of Father Christmas, "But yes, I have. Last town I was in was a desert, so while the humidities being no friend to my joints, its a lovely thing to be able to fish again." He gives a blink, "Ach, sorry, babbling, curse of the old." he gives Sam a slight smile, "Beware, young'n, less gabby you are now, more you'll be at my age." at that, his eyes give a small light, "Reminds me... not sure why... but I swear one of the folks at mass mentioned you were a teacher at Hammel, is that true, brother Lukas?"
