Hello from Hammel's Staff! We have a number of announcements for things that have just happened, are happening now, and will happen soon on Hammel!
First, and perhaps most important, the Hammel staff wishes a sincere welcome to all of our new members, and a welcome back to our returning members! Since I can’t realistically welcome everyone who joined since the last newsletter, I’m going to try to welcome everyone who joined in September by name: Tash and her character Verity Moores, Doc and their character Cameron Tyler, Lurker and their character Anthy Blacksmith, Chris and his character Maximus Rice, Jon and his character Matt Davis, Ben and his character Ruby Storm.
Next: Staff is in the process of archiving threads. Many threads have already been archived that have not been posted in within the last month, and there will be another sweep in the next few days to archive the rest. If you have a thread that you wish to keep open, please PM Sean. As a reminder, if you want a thread reopened after it has been archived, simply PM any member of staff.
As a result of the recent Activity Check, there was a dorm shuffle. Your character might be in a new dorm room, might have new roommates, or both. Please look at the Housing list to see your character’s current dorm assignment.
Also, some reminders on our rules:
Brand new for your enjoyment: the long-anticipated floor plans for the Hammel dormitories! Please thank Sha for the hard work she did in putting together these designs! Now you can see precisely where and how your characters live.
Coming soon/on the horizon: floor plans for the rest of the school!
Also coming soon: The 2014-2015 Student Residence Handbook, courtesy of Cat!
In addition, if you have documentation that you would like to see, please post it in our Suggestions for Hammel Documentation thread.
If you have other IC or OOC questions about Hammel, the universe, playing rules, character creation, or anything else, our FAQ always takes new submissions.
If you have general site suggestions, please post in our suggestions thread.
We have an ongoing Hammel Timeline Project! Post significant dates to your characters so that they can be merged with everyone else. Also, learn about who else was around during significant moments so that you can plot more easily.
We also have a master birthday list! Post your character's birthday to be added to our calendar.
We have started a Participation Challenge! Points will be assigned for reaching certain milestones or for doing certain IC/OOC tasks. This requires member self-reporting to the thread, so post when you reach one of these. Staff will keep tally.
In order to share the love, if there is someone you want to thank for any reason, we have a Thank You To...thread. We also have the Thread of Never Ending Praise for you to share threads that you are following, and Characters Say the Darndest Things thread for sharing IC quotes you enjoy.
The September OTM Nominations go up in two days.
The September Writing Challenge and September Graphics Challenge are open for entries and will be open for most of the month, until the morning of September 27, 2014, Eastern Daylight Time. The September Writing Challenge is “One Wish” and involves your character being granted one wish. All bets are off as to the nature of those wishes or to the results. The September Graphics Challenge is “Monochrome” which is a color-based challenge. Each graphics must use only different shades of a single color (entrant’s choice), or otherwise black and white with one additional color/shade (entrant’s choice).
If you have suggestions for the monthly writing and graphics challenges, please post them in our suggestion thread.
We have many events and plots on the horizon!
First, let’s have a roundup of the current events and open plots still ongoing on Hammel:
-Doctor Sean Neville’s annual Talk thread is still ongoing and is open to question submissions, either in the thread or to Sean Neville’s character account. This will probably wind down by the end of the month or the beginning of October, depending on any remaining chaos or questions in the thread. IC, this takes place during the last week of July, at the beginning of the summer term.
-The Pilot Ridge Community Field Day/Faire is up and running at the lake. This takes place in mid-August, and there is still time to make open threads, make new closed threads, and join threads. Have your character enjoy a relaxing day at the lake, complete with games, food, crafts, rides, and contests, including a charity talent show. Sophie Tillman is supposed to eat a Buick.
-Morgan Munroe is conducting try-outs for Hammel Cheerleading! If your character is interested in joining, or if they have excessive school spirit to share, please sign them up!
We have a lot on the horizon this autumn and winter.
September:
-The September/October Event is underway, and it happens to be Sean’s favorite even. Power Swap! Assignments have already been posted, but it is not too late to make threads and get involved in the chaos. If your character hasn’t lost their powers, write a thread about how strange it is to have kept them while so many others have lost them. If you have a student, consider some chaos in the dormitories. Power Swap is an AU event, and so all threads are not canon. Go wild (within TOS constraints).
-Due to player LOA during the summer, the annual Hammel camping retreat has been pushed back to the end of September to maximize player participation. For newer members, the Hammel camping retreat is a five-day long field trip to camp grounds in New Hampshire. Typical camping activities such as kayaking, hiking, swimming, bonding with nature, and campfires are available. This event is open only to current Hammel students who are not on disciplinary hold, and to volunteer Hammel staff members – no spouses and no alumni. Look for an information thread this coming week!
October:
-The September/October Event: Power Swap will continue through the end of October for new threads. No new threads can be created after the morning of November 1, 2014 but threads can be continued until finished.
-Hammel will have its autumn/Halloween dance at the end of October, open to all students and staff members (plus spouses). The theme for this dance will be “Heroes and Villains” as suggested months ago. Have your character come as a superhero or a supervillain, either one that already exists as a marketed property, or one that they make up themselves. This will be a dry event.
-There is a thread posted to see if we have enough IC interest and eligibility to do a blood drive mini-plot. If so, this will happen in October or early November.
-Sha is making a farmer character so that we can have a slew of autumn events, including a haunted corn maze. Contact her for further information.
November:
-The November/December Event will be posted on the first of November. It is a surprise.
-Sydnee has a fantastic event idea that we want to implement either in November or in January, depending on player availability. This event will be a Team Building/Trust Building Day at Hammel, aimed at helping the students to build relationships and problem-solving skills, and for them to interact with other people that they might not include otherwise. There will be about four IC faculty members leading this, including Everett Lilien. Contact Sydnee for more information.
-Father Cupper wants to hold an IC Thanksgiving event at the church. Contact Stan for further information.
-The LGBT Youth Center might also hold a Thanksgiving event. Stay tuned for more information.
December:
-We will have our annual December mini-events, as we have since the beginning of Hammel in 2010. These include one event for students at the school and one event for adults in Pilot Ridge as a whole.
-Hammel will have its annual Boys vs. Girls Snow War. This is open to all students at Hammel, as well as to any staff or alumni who happen to be there that day. This is an old IC tradition with no known origin, and which divides the student body along gender lines. Anyone of non-binary gender can join either team. No snow inside the building, please.
-Pilot Ridge will have its annual Holiday Bash for adults and to raise money and toys for charity. This event is open only to characters 21+ Location TBD in December. Come for a night of holiday cheer, dancing, alcohol, and shenanigans.
-Father Cupper wants to hold a Christmas IC event at the Church. Contact Stan for further information.
-Additionally, Hammel winter break begins mid-December and will continue until early/mid-January. Characters who have somewhere to go can go home or go on vacation. The dormitories will remain open during this time.
January:
-The January/February Site Event will be Time Warp, one of the site favorites. This is an event where you can play out scenes from your character’s past or future. More information will be posted when the event begins.
-The Student Activities Council will be hosting a Diversity Dinner in January. This IC event will be co-sponsored with the Multicultural Cub and with the Gay/Straight Alliance. Bring something important from your culture or sub-culture to share with others! More information will go up in January.
We also have a number of group threads, event threads, and member-run ideas in progress or on the horizon:
-Everett Lilien wants to hold a cook-off for Hammel students. There is an interest thread posted, but there is no set date for when this will occur. If you are interested in your character participating in the cook-off, either as an entrant or as a judge, please post in the signup/interest thread and/or contact Sydnee.
-The Hammel Book Club has been resurrected and will be led by Zachary Bishop, Salem Hirsch, and possibly Oliver Barnes. A signup thread will be posted in June. Meeting place TBD, meeting times are the second Saturday of each month at 3:00p.m. IC. Players need not have read the book in anticipation. For further information, contact Ophelia or wait for the signup thread.
-Hammel will put on a play courtesy of the Drama Club, led by Hay-lin Mae. Times TBD and play TBD. An information and interest thread will be posted. For further information, or to offer ideas, please contact Sky.
-There will be an art show/art auction fundraiser, led by Devon Wentsworth and the Hammel Art Club. There will be smaller threads leading up to the main event, including a workshop on how to have your art appraised. Splatt will post sign ups and information, and if you have questions, PM Splatt. There will also be a bake sale component run by the Culinary Club, so contact Sydnee for those details.
-There will be a Hammel Spirit Week sometime in the spring. Before then, we will take ideas for Spirit Week activities.
-The Pilot Ridge Register is the newspaper of record in Pilot Ridge. They interview locals for interest columns. Interviews are posted in the Pilot Ridge Register sub-board in the Communications Board. If you would like one of your characters interviewed, please contact Stefan Spencer (Played by Abi) or Ides Alevi (Played by Raven). We are also always looking for more journalists.
If you have an event that you would like to see, please post it in our suggestion thread.
For the purposes of IC plotting:
The following Hammel Student Clubs and Sports Teams have no faculty advisor:
-Basketball
-Swimming
-Track
-Chess Club
-Cinema Club
-Environmental Awareness Club
-Gay-Straight Alliance
-Newspaper
If you have any interest in having your Hammel staff member serve as a faculty advisor, please post in the signup thread. Additionally, if you want to make a new club, follow directions in the signup thread.
If you play a student or faculty advisor and you want to hold a club meeting thread, you require no approval to post it. If you want a club activity such as a fundraiser, please contact Sean for OOC planning.

A reminder that we have a signup list/index for local businesses and job opportunities. Please take a look if you play a student who needs pocket money or work experience, and then contact the appropriate player. If you are a player of a business owner, or if you play a character who works at a business that you OOC created and thus control the NPC owner, and you want to hire students, please post in the signup thread so that students have more opportunities.
Hammel has a new game advertisement! Congratulations to Jonnay!
If you play a trainer, remember to look at the list of students in need of trainers for plotting purposes. If you are a student in need of a trainer, be sure to post in the Student/Trainer Matching thread A reminder that staff does not assign trainers to students, so all plotting involves the consent and participation of student players and trainer players. Also, we are in dire need of trainers at this point, since we have only a handful of active trainers. If you want to make a staff member character, consider making a powers trainer. You’ll have guaranteed plots and you’ll fill an important IC role!
The PUSE site plot is still ongoing, and we need affiliated characters. Check out our Wanted List for characters, if you would like a character in PUSE, or if you would like a character who is politically-involved and against PUSE. For new members, PUSE is People United for Safety and Equality; it is an anti-meta hate group and community action group situated in Pilot Ridge. PUSE also has a Youth Group that is recruiting. If you have questions, PM Sean or Dryope. If you have questions about specific IC PUSE plans, contact Izy, who plays Joe Honnick, the PUSE President.
If you are thinking of a new character but do not know where to begin, check out our Wanted Characters! Also, look at our Play Bys We'd Like to See thread, our Powers We’d Like to See thread, and our Jobs We’d Like to See thread.
If you would like a sub-board added, post in the Buildings/Locations We Would Like to See thread or post in the Housing Application if it is your character’s home or business.
Ophelia has created an index of Open Threads. If you need a place to post, please look it over to see threads that need attention. Likewise, if you start an open thread, be sure to link it to the thread index.
We have slowly resurrected the Hammel TWITTER and TUMBLR blogs! We are taking submissions from everyone. Blog at us!
We are still trying to coordinate a Hammel RL meet-up/convention. Please participate in plotting potential dates. Additionally, we are collecting tee shirt designs.
The staff has an anonymous Ask Box for site feedback and questions. If you want to ask a question or bring something to our attention, but want to do it anonymously instead of face-to-face or on site, please contact us there.
Thanks to everyone for making Hammel the wonderful game that it is. Let us have a fantastic rest of the year of plotting, writing, events, and absurdity.
-Sean and the Hammel Staff

Also, some reminders on our rules:
- Posts are to be written in third person past tense. This looks like: “Sean walked into a room and said, “Hello.” As opposed to present tense, “Sean walks into a room and says, “Hello” or first person, “I walked into a room and said hello.” Please make sure to write your posts consistently for ease of reading/interacting.
- Signatures must be 500px or less wide. Otherwise they stretch the board and slow it down with resizing.
- Don't change font colors or size in your posts. We have people on the site who have trouble seeing different colors, and the default font colors and sizes were chosen so they would be easily readable. After all, you want people to be able to read what you write!
- Please remember to abide by the Proboards TOS. Hammel is a PG-13 site.
Brand new for your enjoyment: the long-anticipated floor plans for the Hammel dormitories! Please thank Sha for the hard work she did in putting together these designs! Now you can see precisely where and how your characters live.
